To think the monarchy will end with the death of Queen Elizabeth 2

As an Aussie am curious to know if British monarchy can really prevail beyond life of Queen.

Recently there has been the biography of Megxit and details, intricate, of the fall out between the two Princes and their wives.

Added to this there is the Prince Andrew saga.

With all that is happening in world, will it really continue ?

I can’t imagine a Prince Charles.

I genuinely wonder why the British bother with it all.

It has to be done on succession, not merit or popularity, or it isn’t monarchy any more.

Exactly. To hear some people you’d think it was a bigger budget version of the Big Brother house.

TheRosariojewels · 27/07/2020 18:01

We can always hope.

@yourestandingonmyneck

I also cannot picture a King Charles. I think it would be ridiculous tbh, he is not a King.

I have thought for a long time that if he has any sense, for the sake of the whole monarchy, he should refuse the throne when the time comes and pass the title graciously onto William. But I doubt he will do that. Ego, probably.

I am not sure they would see that as an act of kindness- surely it would just be giving William extra work and restrictions when he has a young family he wants to spend time with.

@Wolfgirrl

I think it will take a strong republican PM with a moral objection to end it. Kier Starmer..? 🤞
I think getting rid of the monarchy would be a huge vote loser. Even for Labour voters.
TracyBeakerSoYeah · 27/07/2020 18:04

I'd rather have a King or Queen as head of state rather than an elected muppet like Donald Trump.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 27/07/2020 18:04

Try as I might, I can’t imagine a real person using the word ‘graciously’ in this way.

Fletchings · 27/07/2020 18:06

I hope so. the sooner this anachronistic circus with its clowns given to us by accidental deaths comes to an end, the better.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 27/07/2020 18:06

Unfortunately not. But I don't envisage there being another King George. My money's on it ending with Will.

x2boys · 27/07/2020 18:06

What would happen to them though ? I'm not a royalist ,but I don't have any strong feelings either way about the royal family ,would they just live a quiet but luxurious life🤔tbh ,even if they do get rid of the monarchy I think there's to much public interest in them for them to disappear completely.

Pixxie7 · 27/07/2020 18:07

Prince Charles has actually done a lot for this country and it is his birth right, he is also the one happy to dilute the monarchy. Yes Diana was popular but she played the press to her advantage, so she wasn’t perfect.

Starbuggy · 27/07/2020 18:07

I think it will continue.

I also don’t think Price Charles would ever let it pass over him. It’s the job he’s spent his whole life waiting for! I also think he and William would prefer for William to avoid the extra pressure of being monarch for as long as possible, especially while his children are young. Prince Charles grew up as child of a reigning monarch so he knows what that’s like.

Raimona · 27/07/2020 18:09

I think they have the common sense to realise that putting an unpopular monarch on the throne sounds the death knell for the monarchy. People are more likely to support a republic if it prevents a bad king taking the throne. Less so if they love and support the future king. QE is a master at playing this game and has taught Wills and Kate well. Support charities. No public opinions that might alienate people. Don’t comment on political issues. No ostentatious displays of wealth. Be royal but remain relatable and likeable. Unfortunately Harry and Meghan never got the hang of it!

WitchQueenofDarkness · 27/07/2020 18:10

Oh I do hope so but sadly I think we are stuck with them for the foreseeable future.

As the establishment didn't get the result they wanted re Brexit, they won't trust us with an abolition referendum anytime soon

heartsonacake · 27/07/2020 18:10

Rose Hanbury.

PicsInRed What about her? There’s no proof anything happened, it’s nothing more than media speculation to create a buzz.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 27/07/2020 18:11

Nah.

Pelleas · 27/07/2020 18:12

@Sparklesocks

I also cannot picture a King Charles.

Here I can help Grin

I'd love it if that happened!

As a long-standing republican I wish the RF could be brought to a close immediately. The Queen is popular but let's not forget the staggering wealth and property she enjoys the use of while many of her 'subjects' are homeless. As head of the CofE it's extremely hypocritical of the Queen to selfishly hoard her wealth while others suffer.

Raimona · 27/07/2020 18:13

Rose Hanbury
Even if it’s true, Kate is smart enough to realise that her children’s future rests on maintaining the public facade of being a happy family that everyone loves.

MsTSwift · 27/07/2020 18:13

We can but hope OP.

Think of the brilliant people we could have in that role instead of dull old Charles

BubblyBarbara · 27/07/2020 18:14

The Monarchy is like the King in chess. It’s not about what they can do but what they can prevent the other pieces from doing. No monarchy equals a new leader living in palaces and being heard of state. An elected head of state means a sense of “losing your country” whenever the guy you didn’t vote for wins. See the US or France for both of these problems.

BubblyBarbara · 27/07/2020 18:15

And can you imagine Boris being our singular head of state? God help us. A relatively powerless random person is much better to have the “bling” of statehood and then let the elected officials do the real work

LioneIRichTea · 27/07/2020 18:16

I chose YABU because (although I agree) I don’t think it will end. It’s run like a business now, I can’t imagine it would end, even when it gets to William.

isntthatnice · 27/07/2020 18:16

I'm hoping we become a republic when Elizabeth passes. My gran would roll over in her grave if she knew my thoughts but it's 2020. It's not right that the reason why someone becomes the head of state is coming out of the correct vagina. It's wrong.

ListeningQuietly · 27/07/2020 18:17

Boris Johnson as Head of State

Thanks but I'll settle for Charles and Camilla
then William and Katherine
as the latter have clear plans to go Netherlands style

PotholeParadise · 27/07/2020 18:17

I struggle to visual him.as King. I think it's a twisted form of nominative determinism
King Charles I caused the overthrow of the monarchy and was beheaded.
King Charles II restored the monarchy.
King Charles III will cause the overthrow of the monarchy again.
