To think the monarchy will end with the death of Queen Elizabeth 2

As an Aussie am curious to know if British monarchy can really prevail beyond life of Queen.

Recently there has been the biography of Megxit and details, intricate, of the fall out between the two Princes and their wives.

Added to this there is the Prince Andrew saga.

With all that is happening in world, will it really continue ?

I can’t imagine a Prince Charles.

I genuinely wonder why the British bother with it all.

Eh.....for people saying the other option is either a Prime Minister or President (Boris or Trump) you know you can have both? Just look at your neighbours to the left, we've managed it for quite a while now.

TheNewLook · 27/07/2020 18:51

No, sorry OP. You won’t see the abolition of the monarchy in your lifetime.

TheNewLook · 27/07/2020 18:52

It is hugely popular. A few lurid headlines doesn’t change that. Harry and Meghan aren’t part of the monarchy anymore so that’s a moot point.

Andrew has been removed from public life.

The rest are very popular.

Raimona · 27/07/2020 18:52

Why? Meghan was a breath of fresh air
No I completely disagree. She was the complete antithesis of everything the Queen has (very sensibly) avoided. The rest of the RF is not ostentatious, whereas Meghan wanted to have a ridiculously expensive celebrity lifestyle. The RF is private but Meghan wanted to be in the news all the time. Senior royals don’t work or make money from advertising but Meghan wasn’t happy with that. They also don’t accept gifts which again Meghan wasn’t happy with. She wanted to be a celeb, not shake hands with old ladies at a WI in Scarborough. We are well rid of her - she didn’t behave like royalty at all.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/07/2020 18:52

Some of the corgis will be re-homed

Too late - the last one (Willow) died in 2018, and HM only has a couple of dachsund/corgi crosses left now

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/07/2020 18:52

I've always been happy to have a monarchy. The Queens handling of the Prince Andrew issue has completely changed my mind. He should have been banished when he chose to visit Epstein after his conviction. Instead he continued to be treated as if he was an asset and a person to be looked up to.

Jaxhog · 27/07/2020 18:53

It will continue. But it's importance will wane over time.

Right now, it's too much of a tourist draw to disappear altogether.

Goosefoot · 27/07/2020 18:53

No, I doubt it will end with the Queen.

The thing is, constitutional monarchy is a very good system of government, in terms of results. There is no guarantee that changing it would improve things in a real way.

So what would be the point?

KittyFantastico · 27/07/2020 18:54

The only lucky thing is that she decided she wanted out and buggered off to LA.

I think you'll find it was Harry's decision to quit, not hers. And who can blame them? She was absolutely trashed by the press for no reason at all. There was a comparison done of press headlines used for Kate and Meghan, headlines for Kate were generally positive whereas headlines for Meghan were nearly always negative despite her doing the exact same things Kate had been praised for.

derxa · 27/07/2020 18:55

Charles and Anne are my favourite royals. They've worked hard for decades. I thank them for their service.

HyperHippo · 27/07/2020 18:56

The monarchy has always gone through periods of popularity and success and then years of mess. If anything, I think it will be on the up again with things calmer and Charles is already planning to slim things down and Will & Kate bring things up to date. They do an enormous amount promoting charities and good causes, as well as bringing huge amounts of money to our country.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 27/07/2020 18:57

I am not a royal fan but can't see how it could just end. I do think it will be downsized and become far less relevant. They should sell Buckingham palace off and just have it as a visitor's attraction.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/07/2020 18:58

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

I'd rather have a King or Queen as head of state rather than an elected muppet like Donald Trump.
This.

I think a slimmed down monarchy like Holland would work.

tillytoodles1 · 27/07/2020 19:01

The second born sons seem to have a massive chip on their shoulders. They're not as important as they think they are. I don't mind the direct line though.

Codexdivinchi · 27/07/2020 19:01

After the shit show of our government leaders no way would the public go for a republic. There is more stability with a monarch rather than changing every few years with a republic and is less likely to be open to corruption than an elected official.

I don’t mind them, they bring money in and they are a proper dysfunctional family - like most.

And I like Kate Grin

Who would buy it? A tourism outfit?
GetOffYourHighHorse · 27/07/2020 19:03

'think it will be on the up again with things calmer and Charles is already planning to slim things down and Will & Kate bring things up to date. They do an enormous amount promoting charities and good causes, as well as bringing huge amounts of money to our country.'

Yes and also Harry's and Meghan's trashy tell all book has probably done the RF a favour, public sympathy seems to have shifted to support them again after the initial H&M are going to modernise the rf bollocks.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 27/07/2020 19:04

The monarchy won’t just “end”. It would take a huge constitutional overhaul. A referendum. I can’t see that happening in the aftermath of the Queen’s death.

2020wasShocking · 27/07/2020 19:04

It’s more of a tradition than anything else. It brings tourism and she’s probably the most famous royal in the world.

I think they bring far more than they take. The amount of tourism and revenue they generate will surpass anything they receive from the public finances.

They don’t really have a say like they would have done historically. It’s mainly tradition that has continued. There is no power as such these days, it’s all just tradition.

I love the queen. I thy I ages brilliant and I hope she’s around for a good while yet.

I’d also like to see William on the throne as I think he’ll make a great King. An their kids are lovely and I like Kate.

2020wasShocking · 27/07/2020 19:05

I think she’s brilliant I mean

I think that's because when they are very young they are massively important as "the spare". Then they hit adulthood and they live with restrictions, but as soon as their brother has kids they aren't important anymore.

I don't feel massively sorry for them because they have a life of priviledge, but it must be a bit weird to go from being the second most important person to not being remotely important at all.

albatrossdreams · 27/07/2020 19:08

Oh come on, after all the division in society, Brexit, Covid aftermath, do you really think any PM is going to think ' Right, what the country needs right now is to split into bitter rancour and division by a proposal to end the Monarchy.'

FindingNeverland1 · 27/07/2020 19:09

Would rather have Charles / William as head of state than bloody Boris Johnson.

MintyMabel · 27/07/2020 19:11

I think Charles will make a decent king. Camilla is a likeable queen too.

Looking forward to King William too.

I expect people were saying the same after the long rein of Victoria. People couldn’t perceive that the change might be ok, there is nothing to fear.

SantaClaritaDiet · 27/07/2020 19:12

Kate was abused by the press for years
You can easily find the awful nicknames she has been called - and her mum got her fair share, whilst funny enough, her dad escaped!
let's not even mention the so-called "leaks" about adultery Hmm

When Meghan arrived, the level of venom and hatred went to another level entirely. I am sure she must have expected some backlash - she must have read about Kate - but it got outrageous.

Good on them to say stop to that nonsense and go and get a life instead of being stuck in a stuffy outdated environment.

I'd love to know if Queen Laetizia was abused so much when as a former working divorcee she joined the royal family.

If people wants to bitch about celebrities, they don't need the royals, we have enough TOWIE/MIChelsea brit aspiring Kardashian for that.
