To think the monarchy will end with the death of Queen Elizabeth 2

As an Aussie am curious to know if British monarchy can really prevail beyond life of Queen.

Recently there has been the biography of Megxit and details, intricate, of the fall out between the two Princes and their wives.

Added to this there is the Prince Andrew saga.

With all that is happening in world, will it really continue ?

I can’t imagine a Prince Charles.

I genuinely wonder why the British bother with it all.

@Disfordarkchocolate

I've always been happy to have a monarchy. The Queens handling of the Prince Andrew issue has completely changed my mind. He should have been banished when he chose to visit Epstein after his conviction. Instead he continued to be treated as if he was an asset and a person to be looked up to.
This is exactly how I feel. Cannot believe Megan still gets more grief than Andrew and that the Queen choose to publicly support Andrew by taking him to church etc., totally tone deaf.

@midsomermurderess
It would be an elected President who would replace the Monarch as Head of State, not the PM. God, people here are so dim. And to decide it purely on current personalities because they are too dim to discuss it at any other level.

I read it as people being humorous rather than dim. The thought of Boris' face on the currency is rather amusing, though of course no one thinks that's what would really happen.

SantaClaritaDiet · 27/07/2020 19:13

Oh come on, after all the division in society, Brexit, Covid aftermath, do you really think any PM is going to think ' Right, what the country needs right now is to split into bitter rancour and division by a proposal to end the Monarchy.'

it would be the best time to hide the mess we are running into...once the Queen is no longer here.

whysotriggered · 27/07/2020 19:16

At this moment, I would rather have King Charles than a president especially as we seem to be going through a phase of voting in clowns. I don't mind William and I won't be around when his time is up! So for me, I don't mind keeping the Monarchy. But I think a lot of damage has been done due to the Prince Andrew Saga. And I personally feel Meghan was treated appallingly.

This thread has really made me woder how Diana would have fared in the age of Mumsnet....

I think the monarchy will stay, for one reason; at each end of the scale there are very vocal minorities who are either very pro, or anti-monarchy. However, in the middle is a huge mass of utter indifference. And indifference will win, meaning nothing will change.

To the majority of people, having a monarch has no real impact on their lives. I would rather not have a monarchy and I think the idea of inherited superiority/fitness to rule is laughable, but I honestly would struggle to find the energy to actively do anything about it. Plus, a close (but annoying) family member works on a royal estate- so I'm grateful that they are kept busy at the other end of the country and I don't have to bother with them.

Alsohuman · 27/07/2020 19:21

what do you think would be different exactly? What do you think will happen if Boris is called a president instead of a Prime Minister? What do you think will really happen if we scrap the pompous ceremonies involving the Queen?

Anyone who asks questions like this is revealing breathtaking ignorance of our political system and what constitutes a republic.

The next in line would have been trained their entire life to be the monarch which is much better than some dickhead like trump waking in and taking up residency

Spot on.

In RL most people I know are very fond of the monarchy and would hold no truck with attempted abolishment. On MN some posters really seem unaware that many people don't think as they do. The nasty sneering I have seen on here over the years at the thousands royal fans who gather for weddings and other royal occasions without seeming to realise that actually they're in the majority and not the sneerers.

Bemorechicken · 27/07/2020 19:25

@SantaClaritaDiet

Kate was abused by the press for years You can easily find the awful nicknames she has been called - and her mum got her fair share, whilst funny enough, her dad escaped! let's not even mention the so-called "leaks" about adultery Hmm

When Meghan arrived, the level of venom and hatred went to another level entirely. I am sure she must have expected some backlash - she must have read about Kate - but it got outrageous.

Good on them to say stop to that nonsense and go and get a life instead of being stuck in a stuffy outdated environment.

I'd love to know if Queen Laetizia was abused so much when as a former working divorcee she joined the royal family.

If people wants to bitch about celebrities, they don't need the royals, we have enough TOWIE/MIChelsea brit aspiring Kardashian for that.

She was called Waity Katie for years and her family mocked for being "airs to doors" etc then Duchess Dolittle.

However, I supported Meghan at the start and thought here we go an indep woman who has made her own money etc I was 100% behind her -but the reality is you can't take shed loads of money off the public, for a wedding, house etc and expect totally fawning over you, then lecture the little people on "air travel" whilst globe trotting around said globe...... then it becomes a farce.

GilderoyLockdown · 27/07/2020 19:26

I think they bring far more than they take. The amount of tourism and revenue they generate will surpass anything they receive from the public finances.

This gets said a lot, but nobody has any idea really. Pomp and palaces are always popular regardless of whether there's an existing royal family in that country or not. It's not like Versailles is short of visitors, for example.

Raimona · 27/07/2020 19:26

I think you'll find it was Harry's decision to quit, not hers
Hmm, wonder who put that idea in his head? Funny that he’s been happy for the last 30-something years and just suddenly decided to quit now.

Nat6999 · 27/07/2020 19:27

The Royal family have to be one of the most disfunctional families ever. The only good thing they do is create tourism.

albatrossdreams · 27/07/2020 19:28

I don't feel massively sorry for them because they have a life of priviledge

I don't feel they have a life of privilege. Lack of privacy and normal life and agency over one's own life. Must be crap.
The only argument for ending the monarchy I agree with is that it is just not fair on the poor sods born into it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/07/2020 19:29

I wish we could vote for our next monarch.

I'd vote for Princess Anne. She's the only one with an ounce of common sense or any contact with reality.

I think Charles will be rubbish, and Wills will be worse.

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 27/07/2020 19:31

Some of the corgis will be re-homed

Noooooo!! Shock

What about the dorgis?

BilboBercow · 27/07/2020 19:32

We've had unpopular monarchs before, we've had long ruling monarchs die and be replaced with less wonderful ones. There really isn't much of an appetite for a republic in this country. Not enough for people to actually take to the streets and demand one. And it appears Charles wants the job so I can't see him deciding to abdicate.
So yes, the monarchy will go on

sonicbook · 27/07/2020 19:36

I'm no royalist but I'm sure they have been through much more than this throughout the long life of the many monarchs we have had.

Almost certainly not. Media and social media intrusion has never been so fierce. No doubt there have been royals in Prince Andrew's situation before but never with the scrutiny. Queen Elizabeth's death will be the end of the monarchy as we know it. Charles will be crowned but there will be a fundamental shift in the importance along the position and by the time William takes over they will receive no public funding.

Youbigdosser · 27/07/2020 19:37

YABU. I think they do so much good and bring in so much tourism. Historical. I think it would be such a shame if it ended I love the Royals.

The Queen doesn't have any Corgis left. She has 2 dorgis, but hasn't bred any for a number of years

A lot more pity and less mockery and told in the strongest terms to take the kids and LTB. "Your mental health will be so much better with distance from him".

Diana was reportedly terrified to leave as she feared that she would lose the kids, just like her mother did. All of the press stuff was media management to get the public on side and ensure that the Queen would allow her to keep the kids - rather than demand they remain with Charles as legally she could have.

That is still the law. Women of that rank who want to leave still risk the loss of their children.

jessstan2 · 27/07/2020 19:41

No! We have the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who are immensely popular, modern, engaged with the world and caring. Charles may turn out alright too but will obviously rely on his eldest son, daughter in law and their family because he's over 70.

Regarding Prince Andrew, we honestly don't really know yet what he has done and it may come to nothing. However the family have survived really big scandals in the past.

Harry and Meghan's book is not out yet, I bet you anything they say very little to rock the royal boat and what they have said has been taken out of context but we'll have to wait and see what it says - if we can be at all bothered.

Puffalicious · 27/07/2020 19:41

I bloody hope so!

viques · 27/07/2020 19:41

I think William will make a pretty terrible King.

I think he is well meaning, but not terribly bright, doesn't seem to have much sticking power when it comes to work. I think it is clear where the impetus lies in his relationship.

He actually reminds me a lot of my brother who had a similar personality, could talk to anyone, every one loved him but he was actually a bit of a lazy sod, didn't like upsetting people, and would take the easier route in life always with an eye to his own comfort .Early on he found a woman, or rather she found him, for whom life was mapped out from an early age. She had a ferocious work ethic and stood behind him with a well hidden sharp stick .

I think people feel sorry for William , and Harry, because they had such a sad childhood but neither of them strike me as particularly dynamic or charismatic personalities, or outstanding brains. I hope their children make a better fist of their advantages.

I think the best thing all round would be for the whole shebang to be reduced down to a shell, a bit like the Netherlands or Spain(but without the sex scandals and financial shenanigans) with a vaguely ceremonial role but little pomp and circumstance. Children expected to work for a living at proper jobs and to generally disappear into the general population without titles or the expectation of public money sustaining them.
