To think the monarchy will end with the death of Queen Elizabeth 2

As an Aussie am curious to know if British monarchy can really prevail beyond life of Queen.

Recently there has been the biography of Megxit and details, intricate, of the fall out between the two Princes and their wives.

Added to this there is the Prince Andrew saga.

With all that is happening in world, will it really continue ?

I can’t imagine a Prince Charles.

I genuinely wonder why the British bother with it all.

@heartsonacake

Rose Hanbury.

PicsInRed What about her? There’s no proof anything happened, it’s nothing more than media speculation to create a buzz.

I can only state my observation that the media has reported it and that reportedly legal removals have occurred. It was only hinted at (though pointedly) in the UK, but more widely reported in foreign media.

Pretty much the same as David/Wallace (etc) and Charles/Camilla. The foreign press are more open and less deferential.

I think that if the only thing keeping people on side with The Monarchy is the idea that Charles is disgraceful but let's just skip to Will and all will be lovely...they're in for crushing disappointment.

bridgetreilly · 27/07/2020 18:19

It won't end with the Queen, because the Queen is never going to die.

This is fact and no one will convince me otherwise.

GreyGardens88 · 27/07/2020 18:22

I think it should just be massively scaled down, they don't need Balmoral, Sandringham, Windsor, Buckingham Palace. They should have one residence and turn the rest into tourist attractions year round.

Completely get rid of all the lesser Royals, so no Princess Beatrice or Eugenie living it up in Palaces. Just have Kate, William and the three children, then when George is King just have him or if he is gay for example and has no children it can then focus on Charlotte more

If I asked a person to guess where this place was and then described a country where you bow or courtesy to a Queen or King, call others Ma'am, Sir, Lord, Lady, Prince/ss or you had to pay respect to "old money" and aristocracy, and you were defined by your "class", that person would probably say you were referring to somewhere back in the 18th Century or some unplaceable small country in SE Asia that no one can pin on a map.

Well, this is were we live and this is the sh!t we have to put up with.

I hope I live to see the day that the monarchy and aristocracy are disbanded.

Good point.

I've just realised that the requirements of the Brexit cupboard or the COVID cupboard will be nothing to the London-Bridge cupboard. At least initially, the country will grind to a halt and I think people will be quite stunned. Most of us have never known anything but The Queen.

TonyChestnut · 27/07/2020 18:23

Some of my best friends are Germans, but I cannot understand why the majority of people in the UK still think it is appropriate to allow a family such as these, or indeed any other, to continue to rule over us. But, seemingly, they do. So in answer to your question, no I don't think it's at all likely to end with the death of Elizabeth.

SantaClaritaDiet · 27/07/2020 18:23

If Brexit and the pandemic have shown and proven one thing, is that the Monarchy is out-dated, completely redundant and pointless.

It's embarrassing to even accept the concept in these days and age. Countries like Cambodia at least have some kind of selection process, better than a country behaving like a group of sheeps.

Nothing against the individuals as such, it's the concept that needs to stay where it belongs, in the past.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 27/07/2020 18:24

A few years ago I would have said yes.

But now people feel sorry for Charles because of the Harry and Meghan situation and have fallen in love with William's children.

I think it will survive.

bridgetreilly · 27/07/2020 18:24

I'd rather have a King or Queen as head of state rather than an elected muppet like Donald Trump.

This. A Presidential form of government is truly terrifying to me. A constitutional monarchy seems to me to work very well indeed. All the business of government is conducted, as it should be, by elected officials, but all the pomp and glory goes to someone with no choice in the matter. If you let people stand for election to be President, inevitably you sometimes get the kind of people who should never be allowed near any kind of power. Now, of course you get that with the monarchy too, but the difference is that they don't have any actual power, so it doesn't matter.

SusieOwl4 · 27/07/2020 18:24

No I think it will continue . With William .

IMO .

bridgetreilly · 27/07/2020 18:25

Most of us have never known anything but The Queen.

Yes. I will genuinely be devastated. I couldn't understand the public displays of grief for Diana at all, and I thought it was overplayed for the Queen Mother too. But I can't bear the thought of the Queen just not being there any more.

derxa · 27/07/2020 18:25

Keir Starmer Keir Keir Keir.

Dahlietta · 27/07/2020 18:26

Picking and choosing would defeat the whole (stupid) basis of the monarchy. It has to be done on succession, not merit or popularity, or it isn’t monarchy any more.

Absolutely! If we were actually allowed to pick and choose, surely we wouldn't choose any of these plonkers?

bridgetreilly · 27/07/2020 18:27

Also, I think there is literally zero chance of Charles abdicating. Two people ever in UK history have abdicated: James II, de facto, following the Glorious Revolution, and Edward VIII. It's not a thing I think anyone in the royal family would ever consider for a second. It's certainly not a thing you do just because you're old.

SusieOwl4 · 27/07/2020 18:28

I have to say that the Princes Trust does a huge amount of good work . They actually were responsible for turning my nieces life around. Just because you don’t hear about things every day does not mean they don’t exist .

SantaClaritaDiet · 27/07/2020 18:29

All the business of government is conducted, as it should be, by elected officials, but all the pomp and glory goes to someone with no choice in the matter.

the French, the German.. they all manage very well and the role is hardly about the "pomp and the glory".

Presidents or real head of state don't need a gold-plated horse drawn carriage in 2020.

SantaClaritaDiet · 27/07/2020 18:30

We don't need Charles to abdicate, we need to vote and the majority to decide we need a change. it's not that difficult. Probably not the most urgent thing to deal with in the middle of a pandemic and Brexit, but we could still get on it.

Permanantlypuzzled · 27/07/2020 18:30

There won’t be a King Charles iii .
He is to take the title King George vii .
As for passing the crown to William’ why?.
Why would William and Kate want that burden when they have a young family.
Yes the Queen was only 26 and had young children when she succeeded her father. She never wanted it ,but she was next in line.
It speaks much for her character that she has made such a great success of it.
I would think Charles would have more compassion than to force William Into the role.

3rdNamechange · 27/07/2020 18:30

I hope so , sick of the lot of them.

P999 · 27/07/2020 18:31

Too complicated constitutionally, I think. Plus perception that the people love the monarchy. It might end when dreary stories about them stop shifting newspapers. I find them dull, dull, dull. I couldn't even be arsed to get beyond 5mns of 'the Crown'. Everyone raved about it. I almost slipped into a coma I was so bored.

formerbabe · 27/07/2020 18:32

I dread the Queen dying. I think the British public will be truly devastated. No idea what will happen afterwards but thank god for Kate...they got lucky with her.

Chloemol · 27/07/2020 18:34

Yes it will keep going, Charles will be king, then William

It’s unlikely we would want a republic with a president, that would be much worse, we only have to look to America for an example of that

Heartlake · 27/07/2020 18:34

Please let us not have a referendum about the RF!

I'm happy to have fancy but pretty powerless head of state functions.

Couldn't bear the thought of another layer of politicians

SantaClaritaDiet · 27/07/2020 18:34

"they" got lucky with Meghan too, shame some haters took her as an easy target and pushed her young family away.

KittyFantastico · 27/07/2020 18:35

The slimming down of the Royal Family is already slated to happen as Charles has openly stated he will be moving for this and because the 'senior' family members are the reigning monarch, their children+spouses, their grandchildren+spouses - basically the group near the top of the line of succession and their spouses, if married. At the moment this is Queenie/Philip, their four children, their many grandchildren, William/Kate's children (heirs). Once Elizabeth dies then the 'senior' Royals will be Charles/Camilla, William/Kate, and the three Cambridge children. Harry/Meghan would have been included in that had they not stepped down so it's going to be even more streamlined than previously. That ceremonial balcony at Buckingham Palace will be looking far emptier than it does at present.
