Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

OP posts:
NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 17/07/2020 22:05

Shawshank Redemption

Wash your mouth out with soap and water Grin

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 17/07/2020 22:08

The Sound of Music

Nooooo!

likeafishneedsabike · 17/07/2020 22:10

Actually, The Greatest Showman wasn’t that great.
But, to be honest, I think y’all just don’t like movies. Stop watching them !

kierenthecommunity · 17/07/2020 22:33

Most of mine have been mentioned

Lost in Translation. Scarlett Johanson mooching around in her knickers, not getting off with someone old enough to be her dad. And yet one of my friends described it as ‘beautiful.’

The two Matrix sequels. I’d worked aa end of month 12 hour day (sales job) before one of then admittedly, but I actually nodded off in the cinema.

The latest Little Women. It may be my dyspraxic brain but the leaping around of time lines confused the fuck out of me.

Truman Show. Sounded a great idea but just dull. There was a film along similar lines more recently, I think it was called Downsizing? Equally turgid despite sounding really clever and original.

La La Land. It’s rare I dislike a musical but it was astonishing how unremarkable they made it

The second Mamma Mia. It was like they’d said ‘Well we have all these songs off ABBA Gold 2. Let’s shoehorn a story around them. And not do that very well.’

kierenthecommunity · 17/07/2020 22:36

I love Marvel films though. And X-Men 😂

Byllis · 17/07/2020 23:03

Zoolander. Now I don't dislike it, but I've met SO many people who rave about how hilarious it and who say it's their favourite film and have seen it hundreds of times, and... I just see a mildly entertaining, funny in parts, but really very unremarkable film. I agree with a lot of the films named on this thread, and many I don't even like, but for pure distance between the hype and the reality zoolander wins hands down for me.

Sgtmajormummy · 17/07/2020 23:27

Les Misérables.
So bad it was painful.
Why oh why would you get actors who mostly aren’t singers (Eddie Redmayne, Helena B-C, and yes Russel Crowe) to record the songs while filming?? Even a professional singer would find it hard and they’re on a theatre stage, not in the pouring rain or doing manual labour.

Well, at least the director got what was coming to him he when he tried to repeat the formula with “Cats” and it bombed.

Yoir · 17/07/2020 23:45

Bohemian Rhapsody
Mamma Mia
Les Mis
Independence Day
Shallow Hal
Anything with Simon Pegg in it.
The Inbetweeners Movie
Dunkirk
Titanic

gumball37 · 18/07/2020 00:33

@SnickettyLemon

Avatar, All Harry Potter tripe, The Blair Witch Project. Conversely The Shawshank Redemption is my all time favourite (runs, and seeks cover)
It's one of my favorites as well 🤣🤣🤷
gumball37 · 18/07/2020 00:34

For me. Elf. It's alright but not hilarious

MrsFezziwig · 18/07/2020 00:41

Lord of the Rings. If he’d not kept dropping the damned ring...

Ummm - are you sure you've watched it?

Ummm - yes thank you @lazylinguist, although admittedly when it first came out so nearly 20 years ago. Seems like I’m not the only person on this thread either who thought it was rubbish.

CardsforKittens · 18/07/2020 02:16

My partner loves film. I don’t really, but I am reasonably polite and will watch almost anything all the way to the end because he puts up with my peculiarities. I couldn’t make it through:
Titanic
Love Actually
Jurassic Park
The Charge of the Light Brigade

TheSandman · 18/07/2020 02:47

The Star Wars movies.

I'm a SF fan. I love SF movies of all sorts and have been watching them for over 50 years. When the original film hit the screen I thought it was the bees' knees. But now? It really isn't all that good is it? Once you got past the Special Effects (which were sodding AMAZING in the 70s) there's really not much there that hadn't been done a thousand times before and a thousand times since and very often a lot better. The last couple have seen have been monumentally awful, real corporate product. Two hour long toy adverts - and C3PO was/is the most annoying dicking character in cinema history

TheSandman · 18/07/2020 02:50

Seems like I’m not the only person on this thread either who thought it was rubbish.

You're not. I thought it/they were overlong boring garbage as well. The only thing that kept me going at the end was hoping that Sam and Frodo would finally realise their love for each other and we'd get some good old Hobbit on Hobbit action going. (Frodo finds another interesting place to put the ring...?) Gods I was bored.

Mind you, I thought the book was shit too.

OutOntheTilez · 18/07/2020 03:17

I hate, hate, hate Pretty Woman.

Also overrated, IMO, are American Beauty, Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient, and Good Will Hunting. That last one is DH's favorite film. I don't think even Robin Williams can save it.

Leflic · 18/07/2020 03:39

Agree with whoever said It’s a Wonderful Life. I was all prepared to love it - concept sounds good and my sort of thing. So disappointing when it turns out to be the worse sort of patronising American cheese ever.

safariboot · 18/07/2020 03:42

I was supposed to watch Pulp Fiction for a course. Load of rubbish. I gave it at least an hour then gave up.

jessstan2 · 18/07/2020 03:54

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Binkybix · 18/07/2020 04:01

Groundhog Day
Hunger (fell asleep many times)
The Revenant (painfully dull)
Blade runner
American Beauty

However, must take issue with Moana. Not even a little toe tap for ‘you’re welcome’?!

Lots of the films people mention (eg pretty women) I know are not great but so tied up with watching when young I find them like comfort blankets (and didn’t get the dodgy messaging at the time!)

Binkybix · 18/07/2020 04:01

Agree on pulp fiction

Needhelp101 · 18/07/2020 04:17

Ah, I love a good contentious film thread Smile.
I'll concur with LaLa Land but I grew to love The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody because of the music (let's face it, the rest of the films are somewhat pants).
And the original Star wars is so boring.
Rewatched Shawshank the other day and was still impressed.

torquewench · 18/07/2020 05:14

Dick Tracy - massively overhyped back in its day. Utter dogshit.

cariadlet · 18/07/2020 05:37

Loads of films that I like on this list.

I really love It's a Wonderful Life and Casablanca. 2 of my favourite films. I put off watching It's a Wonderful Life for years because I thought it was overhyped and would be too saccharine for me. The ending is pretty corny but there's plenty of darkness in there too.

I like Pulp Fiction, Frozen, Blade Runner and the Blair Witch Project. It probably helped that I saw them all at the cinema when they first came out so didn't have any particular expectation because they hadn't turned into cult films or inescapable films.

I also enjoyed the Truman Show, Withnail and I, the Shawshank Redemption, the Revenant and the Shape of Water.

And I can't believe that as anyone would put The Railway Children in their list.

But I agree with Elf. It's offensive but I really don't get the love for it.

krj2608 · 18/07/2020 06:00

I have a few

Once upon a time in Hollywood

Anything Star Trek

Star Wars

The matrix

Celticdawn5 · 18/07/2020 06:05

Avatar: so very uncomfortably bad.
Frozen 1&2

Love actually
The worst film I have ever had the misfortune to sit through at the cinema is Le Weekend.I thought it would be a lovely film showing off Paris but it wasn’t like that at all and I don’t think I’ll ever get over the close up of Jeff Goldblum eating and talking at the same time.
