Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

OP posts:
clarepetal · 17/07/2020 19:09

Lost in Translation. Pretentious pile of poo.

Mrsjayy · 17/07/2020 19:10

Big hero 6 is adorable how can anybody not like it ! I hate Mary Poppins and The railway children is actual guff.

wildone84 · 17/07/2020 19:11

Love Actually.

Kittytheteapot · 17/07/2020 19:12

Love Actually
The Greatest Showman
Mamma Mia

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 17/07/2020 19:12

The shape of water

I knew I shouldn’t have watched it when it was nominated for so many awards!

JizzPigeon22 · 17/07/2020 19:14

Some of my fave films are on here you baaaaastards

RunningNinja79 · 17/07/2020 19:20

Came on just to say Mamma Mia, but after reading the thread I'd also like to add

La La Land
Star Wars (all of them)
James Bond (admitted I've only seen 3 Daniel Craig ones, but I was either bored or didn't have a clue what was going on)
Marvel films (dont mind the single hero ones as much, but the Avenger ones can just fuck off. Too many people involved)
Also most oscar winning films. My general rule is if its won an oscar its shite Grin

WellThankyouAJPTaylor · 17/07/2020 19:27

Hot Fuzz. DH and I barely raised a smile between us. I think it's the only time we've watched a comedy and found NOTHING funny. It was so unfunny it was almost surreal... We liked Shaun of the Dead, liked Spaced, like most comedies, really, mainstream or culty, so it's definitely not a sense of humour failure.

The English Patient always features prominently on these types of thread. I love TEP, but you all should go watch the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine is the lone dissenter as everyone else rhapsodises about it Grin

I used to write for film magazines, which were almost all exclusively staffed by blokes. I had to keep a lot of things secret including my general hatred of Star Wars. I cannot stand any of them.

I can’t believe anyone said Fight Club. For shame.

Dahlietta · 17/07/2020 20:29

Yep, definitely Love Actually.
And the Matrix, Donnie Darko and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (all in the pretentious wank category). Winning the pretentious wank category is the only film I ever walked out of in the cinema (from boredom). Virgin Suicides? Is that what it's called?

Dahlietta · 17/07/2020 20:30

Oh yes and while I didn't mind it, I don't get the gushing over the Truman Show.

yeOldeTrout · 17/07/2020 20:33

another vote for Shawshank Redemption. I have never watched to the end bc I get bored & ... clean my toenails. Anything else that needs doing, really.

I also struggled with Big Hero 6. I just didn't care about any of them. Star is Born franchise is a Big Fat Fail. Moana goes on and on...

yeOldeTrout · 17/07/2020 20:35

2001 Space Odyssey. My entire family walked out on it after 20 minutes when it was in cinema.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/07/2020 20:37

Also most oscar winning films. My general rule is if its won an oscar its shite

I thought I was the lone hater of films that have won an Oscar.

They are really shite.

I think I could film an Oscar nominee film.

It has beautiful/dramatic scenery, which they try to get in on every shot.
There is usually a lot of looking out into the distance.(see the beautiful/dramatic scenery)
A lot of angst and hand wringing and maybe a few shots of insects/flies etc flying about or crawling somewhere.
That takes up about 1/2 the film and the rest is inane talking where they labour some point over and over.

And there is usually some worthy message in the story

Lucylivesinamushroomhouse · 17/07/2020 20:37

Love Actually
ET
James Bond

I actually loved La La Land and I can’t believe some people have said Moana??!!! What’s wrong with Moana??!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 17/07/2020 21:10

Nottinghill, not funny, awful characters especially Julia Roberts who was a blank space.

Casablanca so boring. Gave up on it. Deer Hunter barely made it through 20 minutes.

SinkGirl · 17/07/2020 21:14

@Oliversmumsarmy what a bizarre thing to say - the majority of Oscar-winning films are nothing like that.

From say the last 20 years, which Best Picture winners do you think you’ve described?

Chocolateandamaretto · 17/07/2020 21:14

Star Wars urgh. Don’t tell my dh but Jesus Christ so dull!

Zilla1 · 17/07/2020 21:17

The Godfather
La La Land (Aha cover band scene)
Casablanca
Deerhunter
Big Hero 6
Moana

OP, how have you corralled such insanity in one place?

APJ1 · 17/07/2020 21:51

I agree with those who said The Shawshank Redemption, La La Land and Bohemian Rhapsody. So boring. I nearly fell asleep during BR!

Talking about Mamma Mia, I'm not sure anyone actually truly thinks they're 'good' films, rather it's all about the 'fun' of the stupid plot and bad singing...?

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/07/2020 21:55

Star Wars is great fun and there was nothing quite like it at the time, I imagine, plus clever special effects. But it's true that they really aren't objectively great films. I guess an immersive universe helps too.

Sojo88 · 17/07/2020 21:56

Groundhog day

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/07/2020 21:56

La La Land bored me shitless.

Geraniumblue · 17/07/2020 22:04

The Greatest Showman. My friends raved about it so much. I hated it and just couldn’t understand their love for it.

Love La La land and Lost in Translation though!
