Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

Another one for Gladiator, I don't think it's a bad film but the hype just didn't match the quality of film.

La la land was pretty boring but I didn't really like the songs!

Pebblexox · 17/07/2020 13:21

Avatar. I wasted over 3 hours of my life, and that film was crap.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 17/07/2020 13:23

Shawshank redemption.

I automatically judge anyone who says that is their favourite film. Its beyond overrated.

Straycatstrut · 17/07/2020 13:24

Oooo nice lighthearted thread! get in.

Frozen. But I have two boys and am not at all girly so maybe that's why.

When I was a teen everyone was going mad for "The ring" - do you remember that?!.... I thought it was absolutely terrible and made no sense.

The sixth sense also was full of holes.

So many were bad! Scream, Candyman, I know what you did last summer. All so cheesy and predictable!.... I did think Jeepers Creepers was hilarious though!

I haven't seen a good film in decades!

CatsArePeople · 17/07/2020 13:25

Deadpool. such nonsense

cariadlet · 17/07/2020 13:27

There are loads of popular films that I don't like (eg Titanic, most superhero films, most action films) but I wouldn't say they're overrated; they're just not my taste.

I'd only talk about overrated films in terms of ones that are critically acclaimed but I don't think are all that special.

Mine would be Taxi Driver. I thought it was a complete load of rubbish. Really can't see what the fuss is about for that one.

1forAll74 · 17/07/2020 13:33

Mama Mia
Love Actually
La La Land

iswhois · 17/07/2020 13:33

God yes I agree with most of these. Love Actually and Dirty Dancing definitely!

Avatar, All Harry Potter tripe, The Blair Witch Project.
Conversely The Shawshank Redemption is my all time favourite (runs, and seeks cover)

Graphista · 17/07/2020 13:40

Deadpool?! Deadpool is fucking ace!!
Star Wars?! Oh come on! Ok I'll give you the prequel trilogy but the entire franchise?! Or the first film made?! No way!

Mine are a few that have already been mentioned

Shawshank redemption - meh! Seen much better

Inception - very messy narratively speaking which really lets a film down

Gladiator - ok, moving but too long

Not yet mentioned (this is where the arguments will start!Grin)

It's a wonderful life - hate it! Schmaltzy, worthy poorly written tripe! Had to watch AND WRITE ABOUT for uni lecturer a die hard Capra fan I am most definitely not so my essay criticising just about every aspect of this film did not go down well Blush oh well at least I was honest and not a lick arse!

Thelma and Louise - just couldn't warm to it at all and I normally love those actresses, thought it the complete opposite of what it professes to be and is celebrated for - a feminist movie about "strong women"

iswhois · 17/07/2020 13:42

Yeah I thought inception was a mess! I thought I was the on one

Star Wars! any Star Wars movies. Don’t get it... terrible! 😱😱😱😱

CatsArePeople · 17/07/2020 13:44

Oh the Star Wars... so bloody boring, made myself watch it for general education, but never again

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/07/2020 13:44

La La Land
Moulin Rouge
Wizard of Oz
Chitty chitty bang bang

Thisisworsethananticpated · 17/07/2020 13:45

Ordinary people

I was so cross with him after the first two episodes that I couldn’t move in from it

And most of what people recommend on Netflix !

sqirrelfriends · 17/07/2020 13:46

The Greatest showman was a steaming pile of shit IMO

eddiemairswife · 17/07/2020 13:46

Definitely Titanic. So long and dull, and I didn't feel a smidgen of emotion. Whereas A Night to Remember, black and white, Kenneth More, stiff upper lip, really tugs at the heartstrings.

CornishYarg · 17/07/2020 13:47

Moulin Rouge

SerenDippitty · 17/07/2020 13:47

Interstellar. zzzzz

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/07/2020 13:49

Any film that has won an Oscar

dontdisturbmenow · 17/07/2020 13:49

La la land
Definitely! Waited until a few months ago to watch, really tried to stay with it thinking it was bound to get better but it didn't. Never seen a musical as boring and pointless as that one!

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 17/07/2020 13:50

Another vote for Love Actually. I have tried rewatching it several times just in case I am missing something but I always fall asleep 😴

hypernova · 17/07/2020 13:52

Agree with The Godfather.

Crash. How that won the Oscar for Best Picture I've no idea.

VeryQuaintIrene · 17/07/2020 13:52

Lots of Lala land haters on here, yay!

MrsFezziwig · 17/07/2020 13:53

Lord of the Rings. If he’d not kept dropping the damned ring it need only have been 30 minutes long and all the better for it.
