Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

OP posts:
Inkanta · 18/07/2020 06:42

Three Weddings and a Funeral
Love Actually
Mama Mia
Frozen
Dirty Dancing
The Greatest Showman

Inkanta · 18/07/2020 06:44

Or is it Four Weddings and a Funeral - not three. Smile

Inkanta · 18/07/2020 06:47

Oh and Les Mis.

Unfollowtherules · 18/07/2020 13:31

Lost in Translation
The Big Lebowski
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Mamma Mia
Forrest Gump
La La Land

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2020 13:36

Lost in Translation always pops up on these threads, I don't think anybody enjoyed it just pretend too Grin

User56781234 · 18/07/2020 13:39

La La Land - la la lost the will to live.
Mama Mia - or anything with Meryl Streep being all cutesy and adorable*
The Devil wears Prada - struggled through first 20 minutes and then switched off. Also: Meryl Streep.
Withnail and I - straight over my head. Apparently, it's a scream Confused
Pretty Woman - Sex work is romantic. If you say so...

*Thank you, Bill Bryson

LunaNorth · 18/07/2020 13:41

Citizen Kane. Boring story, stagey acting, interminable.

sst1234 · 18/07/2020 13:41

Fight club. Tries really hard to be artistic and mind bending but is totally underwhelming. Waste of 2.5 hours.

SmudgeButt · 18/07/2020 13:47

Love Actually

I've had to point out to friends who adore this that it's about a man who cheats on his wife, a friend who makes a play for his best friend's new wife, an employer who removes someone from their job because of potential sexual harassment, a woman who can't have a relationship due to her brother's health, a man and woman who fall in love without actually ever having a conversation as they don't speak a common language, a widower who falls for a model barely a month after the death of his wife. bizarrely the only almost normal loves are between 2 children and between 2 people working in the porn industry. Oh and 3 poor American women who sleep naked with a stranger they have just met to keep warm. (I actually like that story line despite it being completely improbable.)

Unfollowtherules · 18/07/2020 13:49

I saw Lost in Translation at the cinema with someone who loved it. I didn’t get it at all.

Also agree with Love Actually and ET.

I sat the whole family down once to watch ET and told them it was a classic and they would love it. It had really dated and everyone was looking at me gone off.

Also Dangerous Liaisons.

Crystal87 · 18/07/2020 13:53

The Breakfast Club. Nothing happens in it but it's one of those films everyone goes on about.

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2020 13:54

unfollowttherulesYour cinema mate said they loved it but did they though [Wink

The80sweregreat · 18/07/2020 13:56

I didn't mind lost in translation as Bill Murray is so grumpy and awkward I want to shake him put him out of it ( I know that is the point of the film ! )
It is a bit slow , but I've seen worse.

Withnail is an acquired taste but the roads they go on fascinate me as they so empty!
Reminds me of my youth.
I have never seen any star war or lord of the rings films ! People think I'm very strange.

TeetotalKoala · 18/07/2020 14:10

Star Wars. Meh. DH and I tried to watch the newest one recently as we quite like an action film, irrelevant of the franchise (we enjoyed the Star Trek movies despite not liking the shows). We turned it off 10 minutes in. We literally didn't care what was happening.

Avatar. Saw it at the cinema. Entertaining enough but definitely not worthy of the hype.

Blair Witch Project. Boring as shit.

La la land. I didn't mind it, but like Avatar, didn't get the hype.

I hated Mamma Mia. Refused to watch it again. Tosh.

But I love Shawshank. I'm a Stephen King fan though.

TSSDNCOP · 18/07/2020 14:11

Anything featuring Hobbits, rings and Gandalf.

Leah91 · 18/07/2020 14:12

A clockwork orange. Also 2001 a space odyssey.

And all comic book films.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 18/07/2020 14:23

Ahh see I don’t mind Lost In Translation because absolutely nothing happens. It’s comforting. A bit like being placed into a very short coma.

Purplemist · 18/07/2020 14:31

Moulin Rouge was boring and I don't even know how Pulp Fiction ends as I fell asleep.
Sorry to hear La La Land may go the same way as I have just bought the dvd. 25p in a charity shop so not much invested to lose!

Therealjudgejudy · 18/07/2020 14:37

Thelma and Louise- Awful

The Green Mile- Meh

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 18/07/2020 14:40

1917

dayswithaY · 18/07/2020 14:47

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood - what was that all about? It looked like one long music video with Brad in different outfits. None of it made sense, Leo looked lost and Al Pacino was wheeled in for a pointless cameo plus creepy shots of Margot Robbie's feet and terrible background music that was completely distracting. I'm sure it won Oscars too.

Silver Linings Playbook - more nonsensical ramblings with no storyline and mismatched lead actors. Clearly just a vehicle to get Jennifer Lawrence an Oscar - who needs a script? And also Mother! although everyone hates that so I'm not alone.

Macguffin69 · 18/07/2020 14:48

Some Like it Hot. I thought I was going to love it; I love the old classics and it's often cited as the funniest film ever made. I quite enjoyed it, but I didn't laugh out loud once.

allthatmalarkey · 18/07/2020 15:08

Braveheart
45 minutes in I was just too bored and dropped out. It wasn't just the ridiculous cardboard cutout English baddies, I love plenty of other things where the English don't come off well. I was all for a bit of anti-colonialist swashbuckling, but it was all just a bit meh.
