Popular films you think are overrated?

Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

OP posts:

The movie I instantly thought of when I saw the title of this thread is "The Shawshank Redemption"... I was completely underwhelmed by it.

@WingingItSince1973

Groundhog Day. Watched for the first time ever in my 47 years and what a load of tripe that was 🤣🤣🤣
Oh I’m with you on that one.
LochJessMonster · 18/07/2020 15:13

Black Panther.

OutOntheTilez · 18/07/2020 15:15

Oh God, yes to Four Weddings and a Funeral and It's a Wonderful Life. I've never been able to get through It's a Wonderful Life. I watched all of Four Weddings and was seriously underwhelmed.

Two of my best friends raved about twilight (all of them) and 50 shades. Thought I would give them a go with them (although tbf had seen lots of negative 50 reviews, missed any for twilight saga). No. On the never again list. Hard to turn off when your mates are riveted though!

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2020 16:39

Talking about twilight 50 shades is horrifying I'm so glad I didn't see it in the cinema I would have died with the cringe !

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 16:51

I’ve never seen The Greatest Showman, but the amount of people who raved about it honestly made me a bit uncomfortable. Quality film or not, making a cheery musical about someone who treated people (his ‘freaks’) so atrociously is just bizarre. I struggle to believe the film was actually made/released in 2016 - a decade earlier, fair enough, but so recently! Why not just make a fun movie musical based around a circus instead of pretending P.T.Barnum was a good person?

In answer to your question OP, I disliked ‘Blazing Saddles’. I don’t know if I just didn’t ‘get’ it but I thought it was a load of shite.

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 16:52

Ooh, also, Blade Runner. I did enjoy it, just didn’t feel it deserved the hype.

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 16:54

(Last one, I promise) Bridesmaids. I just didn’t find it funny. I tried - twice! When you aren’t laughing at a comedy, it’s time to switch it off.

cariadlet · 18/07/2020 16:59

@whattimeisitnow I refuse to watch The greatest Showman for the same reason. Besides exploiting the "freaks" in his circus, he started in showbiz by buying an old slave, saying that she used to be George Washington's nurse, touring the country and exhibiting her. He pretty much worked her to death. When the film was released, I got infuriated by the idea of turning him into a hero.

He also had total contempt for the "suckers" who paid to see his shows, but that isn't so bad in comparison with his other behaviour.

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 17:01

Yes @cariadlet!!! Glad it’s not just me. The whole thing was just so odd to me - who thought it was a good idea?
A couple of my ultra left-wing, super PC friends (not a criticism, I’m a leftie myself) made social media posts praising the film for its inclusive messages, despite it being based around the antithesis of their own beliefs. I felt so embarrassed for them.

turquoise50 · 18/07/2020 17:03

Blade Runner (original)

I've tried to watch this multiple times over the years and always fall asleep! At the same point. Every single time.

RachelRosie · 18/07/2020 17:17

I was so disappointed with La La Land. I love Emma Stone and was so excited to see it.

I hated Bridesmaids. The jokes weren't funny to me and some went on too long.

cariadlet · 18/07/2020 17:20

I've also tried Bridesmaids a few times (never managed to sit through all of it) and found it very unfunny. I can understand why it would be popular but just not my taste; what I don't get is how it got so many good reviews.

Grapewrath · 18/07/2020 17:23

Love actually
Greatest showman

Grapewrath · 18/07/2020 17:25

Also Forrest Gump so boring

holidayplanningnewbie · 18/07/2020 17:26

Anything that ends up with the climax being two men having a fight. Good guy wins.

Yawn.

luckylavender · 18/07/2020 17:30

Breakfast in Tiffany's. I watched it for the first time in lockdown & I was so disappointed.

The80sweregreat · 18/07/2020 18:11

I hated Bridesmaids too. The bit in the wedding dress shop with the food poisoning was gross!
Only good bit was when she made that lovely cup cake!

ShebaShimmyShake · 18/07/2020 18:24

Yeah, I wanted to like Bridesmaids; subversive, by women, for women...but it was just kind of crap. The wedding dress scene didn't bother me but it didn't make me laugh either. I'm not really a fan of gross out comedy.

Doggybiccys · 18/07/2020 18:25

HRTFT - Usual Suspects. Absolute pish.

Doggybiccys · 18/07/2020 18:27

Yes to 50 shades. Acting shocking - all Dakota Johnson seemed to do was chew her lips as if she was in some early Britney Spears pop video. Grim.
