Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

I saw a clip of fifty shades once. That was enough for me to see it was like the books probably are : pile of poo!

ShebaShimmyShake · 18/07/2020 18:33

I thought the 50 Shades film got pilloried anyway though?

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 18:37

Christ, I’ve just realised it must have been THREE times I gave Bridesmaids a chance, not two. Twice with two different friendship groups, once with family. Never got more than half an hour or so in. Why do I keep putting myself through this?

gumball37 · 18/07/2020 18:39

@holidayplanningnewbie

Anything that ends up with the climax being two men having a fight. Good guy wins.

Yawn.

You should watch Arlington Road
GlitterMagicPompom · 18/07/2020 18:59

Mama Mia!

AgeLikeWine · 18/07/2020 19:08

The Shawshank Redemption.

It’s a good film, no doubt about it and Morgan Freeman is outstanding as always. But it is absurdly overrated by far too many people. The fact that it is the perennial all-time number one on IMDB says more about public taste than the quality of the film, which is sentimental and mawkish. Tim Robbins is awful as Andy. The character is a total nonentity so no wonder his wife cheated on him.

And don’t even get me started on Forrest bloody Gump...

MrsToothyBitch · 18/07/2020 19:18

Bridesmaids- crude and vile and unfunny
Titanic: overrated & ROBBED LA Confidential at the Oscars
Star Wars: more like Star Bores
Star Trek: Man child heaven
Avengers Age of Ultron : dull & weak plot
Black Panther: lackluster and overrated
Love Actually: up itself, flimsy plot & premise
Ferris Bueller: smug little shit
Breakfast Club: turgid, unlikeable cast
The Matrix: heavy going
Dirty Dancing: over hyped & twee
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: more like shitty shitty wank wank
Wizard of Oz: stupid plot, only remarkable for use of technicolor, gave us the twee-est song ever
Ghostbusters (original) - I fell asleep

However, I adore the Godfather, it's one of my favourites and it's brilliant in so many ways! Second favourite gangster flick only to the excellence that is Once Upon A Time in America.

Cottipus · 18/07/2020 19:19

@whattimeisitrightnow I clicked on this thread to add Bridesmaids! Terrible film, like all the gross bits of American Pie without the humour.

It must have been popular though because I gave it a bad review on Lovefilm and loads of users down arrowed me.

MrsToothyBitch · 18/07/2020 19:21

Oh - and Pitch Perfect. I just found it all too unlikely and silly and it REALLY thought it was funny.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 18/07/2020 19:37

I finally got round to watching Blade Runner it looked so dated and bored me

Pitch Perfect was awful

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 19:37

Agree wrt Pitch Perfect. And I didn’t care for Titanic, either, nor did I find the ending all that sad...

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 19:40

Perhaps that’s the problem with BR, and many older films in general - they’re dated. They were much more enjoyable in the context of their release than they are now. PPs have mentioned Star Wars: those films (originals) were revolutionary when they came out.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 18/07/2020 19:46

I love many old films Some Like it Hot is a favourite.

I watched Titanic recently as ds was learning about it at school and as before found it ridiculous (the relationship) and thought of it was made now they probably wouldn’t have that as so central to the story I think it would be told differently

There is something very 80’s about Blade Runner but do love When Harry Met Sally and Coming to America both very 80’s

Nope, I fell asleep the first time too, circa 1990. Same with The Blues Brothers. Always at the same point in the film, and then I wake up during the final number. At least three attempts. I have no idea what happens after they leave the country & western bar. Grin

OMG, Bridesmaids! I've seen that twice (why?!) and still hate it.

I once made the mistake of watching The Greatest Showman (ok-ish but didn't deserve the hype) followed by Les Mis (absolutely dire) on a twelve-hour flight. I'd rather have jumped out of the plane! Confused

Mookie81 · 18/07/2020 20:21

@smallaxe

2001: A Space Odyssey

I've tried to watch it at least 5 times and fallen asleep every time.

The Godfather

Same.

I like the Godfather (fave scene is when Michael is discussing killing Solozzo and the police captain in the study) but Goodfellas is better overall.

2001 Space Odyssey is my no.1 overrated film. It's an average space film with a self indulgent, nonsensical end scene (and no I don't want anyone 'explaining' the ending to me, I've read about it thank you!)

theproudgeek · 18/07/2020 20:30

Pulp Fiction - I gave up part way through and finished painting a wall, so literally watching paint dry was more interesting.

Greatest Showman - I can see why people enjoy it because of the music (very feel good) but it has the depth of a puddle and is less realistic than Star Wars.

annabel85 · 18/07/2020 20:33

Chinatown. Bores the hell out of me. Same with 2001 Space Odyssey

Covert20 · 18/07/2020 20:35

Citizen Kane

Oliversmumsarmy · 18/07/2020 20:46

what a bizarre thing to say - the majority of Oscar-winning films are nothing like that

From say the last 20 years, which Best Picture winners do you think you’ve described

Don’t know about most of them but the trailers put me off. You can almost tell they have been made with a shot at an Oscar in mind. They are so formulaic I can tell before the end of the clip it is Oscar material.
And I don’t mean in a good way.

I actually sat through Avatar (I had to as I was with other people in a packed cinema)

It was excruciating
A lot of pretty scenery, the angst about saving a tree, the worthiness of fighting for good.

Definite Oscar winner

RunningNinja79 · 18/07/2020 20:51

So many more I forgot about.

The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink. I've not seen any other Bratpack films as I don't see the point if I dont like these two

Totally agree with Bridesmaids. Also not a fan of the hangover films.
I also dont like any comedy with the likes of Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller in. They dont tend to be that funny.

Ooh another one that a lot of people raved about on SM (mainly in running groups). Britney Runs a Marathon. It was just so dull and boring.

I didn't enjoy the greatest showman the first time, but the second I did prefer it. I think it was so hyped up to be the best film ever that I didn't get that so when I watched it again I already knew it wasn't. It made it much more tolerable.

I do like Love Actually though, but not sure if Joanna Paige and Martin Freeman were in the porn industry though. Weren't they body doubles for bigger stars in movies?

MrsToothyBitch · 18/07/2020 20:56

@Mookie81 both good but Godfather still edges it for me, I very much enjoy the revenge on Solluzzo parts! I found it less "loud" than Goodfellas, although I enjoy both.

Surprised at the dislike for Gladiator, not my sort of thing at all but I really enjoyed it.

@turquoise50 I love the Blues Bros! I can always rewatch it! Very funny and I love the music. I can't stay awake through Ghostbusters though- perhaps it's something to do with Dan Aykroyd?

CandidaAlbicans2 · 18/07/2020 20:56

Pulp Fiction (and everything else by Quentin Tarantino)

Covert20 · 18/07/2020 21:07

But most of these films aren’t critically acclaimed, so they’re not “overrated” you just don’t like them...

okiedokieme · 18/07/2020 21:07

La la land

willowdean · 18/07/2020 21:17

Yes to a lot of the Brat Pack type films from the 80s.

I cant understand why Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles were ever popular, both dreadful. A lot of Sixteen Candles is just grim. I can see why the Breakfast Club originally held appeal but it’s dated badly and is just a load of angsty white teens (who actually look too old to be teens) moaning.
