Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

Mama Mia, Love Actually, Star Wars, La La Land and Grease.

daisychain1620 · 17/07/2020 16:00

There are quite a few of my all time favourites mentioned here lol
I think Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman are v over rated.

35andThriving · 17/07/2020 16:14

I think Elf is overrated and DH thinks The Full Monty is.

NellePorter · 17/07/2020 16:20

Definitely a matter of taste, I love some of the films already mentioned here! But didn't rate Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Titanic, The Departed, loads more Smile

Trailing1 · 17/07/2020 16:24

The Revenant
Dirty Dancing
Scarface

SarahBellam · 17/07/2020 16:30

Love Actually
Four weddings and a funeral
Bridget Jones Diary (Bridget was feisty and funny and ‘couldn’t give a shit’ in the book. She was such a pathetic drip in the movie. The blue soup incident in the book had me crying with laughter. It was just eye rolling in the movie).
Dirty Dancing
Inglorious Bastards
Lord of the Rings trilogy

Zebramumma · 17/07/2020 16:32

The Sound of Music

(runs and ducks for cover)

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 17/07/2020 16:35

I fell asleep watching the Greatest Showman. Drooling and everything.

PerfidiousAlbion · 17/07/2020 16:40

I cannot believe that some people think the shawshank redemption is shit/overrated.

It has great acting, brilliant score, an all star cast, great dialogue, superb storyline, great cinematography etc. etc.. It’s stood the test of time too.

I agree with the person upthread though who said that generally, if the critics like it and it won an Oscar then I wont like it.

Miafey · 17/07/2020 16:41

Surprised to see so many mentions for the Greatest Showman, purely because I didnt think it was well rated in the first place.

The Big Lebowski for me.

Harryfrog12 · 17/07/2020 16:44

Kill bill - all of them

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 17/07/2020 16:44

The Big Lebowski for me
Ah see I loved that. I suppose it would be odd if we all liked the same. Many new films are so bland at least films like Greatest Showman have some quality even if it wasn't for me.

purplemunkey · 17/07/2020 16:46

The Notebook.

ProperVexed · 17/07/2020 16:47

The English Patient
Titanic
Dunkirk
Bohemian Rhapsody
Dirty Dancing

LakieLady · 17/07/2020 16:47

At what point can we turn this into an argument? Someone has just called The Godfather over-rated and I feel that is argument worthy

I felt the same about The Revenant, which I thought was brilliant.

Graphista · 17/07/2020 16:49

The big lebowski yes I agree with that, essentially a Stoners wet dream!

Sunshinesky1981 · 17/07/2020 16:50

Blair witch project. Really dont get the hype about how people were shaking and crying in the cinema. Load of old toss.

dottiedodah · 17/07/2020 17:05

Mama Mia was awful I thought .Disappointed as really like Abba but felt that Meryl Streep was miscast and the whole premise of sleeping with 3 guys around the same time just didnt ring true for me at all. She is just so wholesome !

chunkyrun · 17/07/2020 17:10

The joker

The80sweregreat · 17/07/2020 17:11

I wasn't keen on either mamma Mia films , but the scenery is worth the terrible story and singing.
I thought I'd hate The Revenant but I really liked it and it's not my kind of film usually!
The breakfast club is a terrible film but people seem to love it. ? ?

Soubriquet · 17/07/2020 17:12

I love mama Mia. It’s my to go to film if I’m really down

I also love the marvel films

But I can’t bring myself to watch Star Wars

Puffinhead · 17/07/2020 17:14

I liked La la Land (didn’t love it though) and Lost in Translation is a favourite of mine.

Agree with The Greatest Showman, bored me to tears but the kids liked it.

My contribution is the James Bond films. All of them.

OohKittens · 17/07/2020 17:17

Bridget Jones
Forest Gump
Chitty Chitty bang bang
Love actually
Notting Hill
Not a film but primes this is us.

Anniegetyourgun · 17/07/2020 17:34
