Without the risk of this turning into a huge debate/slanging match. What are some films that everyone loves but you think are overrated

I'll start with True Romance

OP posts:

Planes, trains and automobiles.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Star Wars
Lord of the ring
The hobbit

@Busybusybust

La la land. It bored me stupid.
We left the cinema after about half an hour. An absolute load of shite.
TheChiefJo · 17/07/2020 13:56

The Matrix
Love Actually
Pearl Harbour
Hunger Games
Saving Private Ryan
Dunkirk

TheChiefJo · 17/07/2020 13:57

Oh and those Mission Impossible films

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/07/2020 13:58

Withnail and I
La La Land
Dirty Dancing
Harry Potter films
Deerhunter - the opening scene goes on forever

caramac04 · 17/07/2020 14:00

Mamma Mia
Dirty Dancing

WriteronaMission · 17/07/2020 14:01

Pulp Fiction, Sin City, Dirty Dancing, Star Wars, Harry Potter (the books are also overrated imo).

The one that's surprised me the most for finding it overrated because I like dystopian/post-apocalypse futures was Snowpiercer (movie). Have much preferred the TV series as it's more than just "take the engine."

I generally find that if a critic loves it, I don't and vice versa.

dayswithaY · 17/07/2020 14:02

Us - meant to be a horror but couldn't get past Lupita Nyong'o with a silly growly voice.

Educating Rita - used to love that film but when I saw it the other day it was an embarrassing, hammy, cliche filled "Look at me I'm acting" waste of time.

Moonlight - dull, unrealistic, borefest. Naomie Harris is the healthiest, shiniest looking crack whore that ever existed.

2001: A Space Odyssey

I've tried to watch it at least 5 times and fallen asleep every time.

The Godfather

Same.

Parky04 · 17/07/2020 14:03

Another vote for La La Land. Horrific film!

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 17/07/2020 14:06

Anything from the Marvel franchise, the storylines are so predictable and dull. Peril –hero –day saved. I say this having seen only a few because I find them so dry, but this is the hill I will die on.

Also Roma –I watched the first hour and nearly fell asleep, had no idea what was going on. I only found out recently it won an Oscar. Wtf.

smallaxe · 17/07/2020 14:09

@WriteronaMission is Snowpiercer overrated by people then? The whole proposition is so ludicrous that I'm amazed anybody's got past the first few minutes.

And don't get me started on Mortal Engines.

DrManhattan · 17/07/2020 14:12

A star is born. Wtf was all the hype about that??

La la land I just wanted to end. Only one I nearly walked out on and I've seen Cats.

Can't watch iris elba in anything ever again.

Backtoreality1 · 17/07/2020 14:14

Shaweshank redemption
Lala land

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/07/2020 14:16

I know a group of MT students/actors who watched LaLaLand at the cinema.

Not watched it myself but I am told there is a scene at an audition where the woman ends up crying because they are not taking notice of her.

One of them shouted Grow up and another shouted get used to it.
They had all had similar things happen to them in auditions, it goes with the job. You just shrug your shoulders and go onto the next audition.
They just thought it was pathetic and walked out.

The English Patient
Star Wars
The Greatest Showman

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (original)
Gone with the Wind

The Irishman on Netflix... oh my, what a dreadful film. And 3 hours long!

thisstooshallpass · 17/07/2020 14:25

A Star is Born

KeepingPlain · 17/07/2020 14:28

@Fleeflyyflooo

Yay! Why do you hate fight club? I hate it too!

lazylinguist · 17/07/2020 14:31

Surely lots of these are just films that are not your type of film? Lots of people who don't like superhero/action/sci fi/fantasy films seem to watch the really big ones because they feel they ought to, and then claim they're overrated when actually they are just a genre they don't like!

My most overrated film (which I expected to like) was Lost In Translation.

Gottalovesummer · 17/07/2020 14:32

I would rather clean my toilet than watch Love Actually again.

lazylinguist · 17/07/2020 14:32

Lord of the Rings. If he’d not kept dropping the damned ring...

Ummm - are you sure you've watched it?

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/07/2020 14:37

Big Hero 6. Pile of slushy and painfully contrived wank. As was the new Mary Poppins film. Coco wasn't very good either.
