And it continues. Thank you for those black people who took the time to share their stories once again.

Thank you all.

Lecture people long enough and it is irrelevant what you say, or whether you are right or wrong. It isn't heard. There is only so much "it's all your fault" that people can take before they tune out. This is not changing anything for black people or white people or any other colour of people. The thread is pointless.
I point you to @shreddednips post.

Dreep · 06/06/2020 15:04

No one wants the thread to go. It is an important subject. But this thread has strayed from the main objective in part because of The subject title. I do think that the title is ambiguous and provocative. And it has just been said it was engineered to grab attention - so it was clickbaity.

So much offence is being taken where there is none. E.g. worra
who was being kind to OP.

And even more offence is given when we cannot try to understand that everyone’s experiences are relevant and count.

I’ve been thinking of a quote more and more.

‘Turning man against his brother / 'Til man exists no more‘

And that sometimes what these threads do. Sad

janeskettle was right. So very right.

Dreep · 06/06/2020 15:04

🌻

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 15:05

Pointless statement in the title, white people can and do face racism.
No they don't.
Perhaps read through the first two threads before just joining now and making an ignorant repetitive point.

WokeUpSmeltTheCoffee · 06/06/2020 15:06

3 threads later and still they come...

Bloody hell I feel tired of fighting now and I've only had a few hours discussion not a lifetime!

I was puzzled and irritated by OPs stance to start off with and thought she ought to engage and explain but now I see exactly why she has stopped. It's an endless tide. They just keep coming.

Her staying silent did actually force white people including me to go away, read some of the resources which really are easily available and start to do some fighting for her.

It's a very clever and effective debating strategy actually

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 15:06

Change your title if you want...
Nah I'm good.

it’s not only black people that suffer racism. It’s naive to think so.
I agree. BAME people on a whole do. But this is about BLACK PEOPLE

66redballons · 06/06/2020 15:09

Society needs unity Patrick, not divisive statements such as yours “our time” it’s everyone’s time to unite. Dividing people stirs up hatred and shrinks collective efforts/voices by divide and conquer.

66redballons · 06/06/2020 15:09

That’s not your decision people can write what they want.

Railingsohno · 06/06/2020 15:10

Thanks for posting this. As a white person in a very white part of Scotland I have lived a very sheltered life. The last week has really opened my eyes to the white privilege that I have and have really been clueless about. I would always call out blatant racism in the older generations but have really been unaware of how structural and endemic it is in every day life.

I have three children and I’ve been talking to them about it.

I really hope that things can change.

NaturalBornWoman · 06/06/2020 15:11

You may think it's pointless. I think it's been very interesting and enlightening. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

You aren’t! Interesting, enlightening and inspiring.

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 15:13

Society needs unity Patrick,
It's a shame, then, that white people divided us.

not divisive statements such as yours “our time” it’s everyone’s time to unite. Dividing people stirs up hatred and shrinks collective efforts/voices by divide and conquer.
It may be everyone's time to unite but it's our time. You are uniting for us.

OP posts:
DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 06/06/2020 15:13

it’s everyone’s time to unite

So why not unite behind the Black Lives Matter movement? Right now they are hurting and angry and understandably so. It is time for all of us to get behind the movement, recognise our privilege and use it for good.

The only people creating division are the All Lives Matter bunch.

Thank you for your emotional labour on this thread OP

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 15:15

*I have three children and I’ve been talking to them about it.
*That's great!

I really hope that things can change.
With your help it CAN. I believe that, genuinely. I'm scared for my dc's future but a little excited now, she might not have to face the racial abuse I have.

OP posts:
WokeUpSmeltTheCoffee · 06/06/2020 15:15

This thread is in a context

The context is the racist Murder of George Floyd by a white police officer

People from other minority groups do face discrimination but I posted official Gov. UK figures showing that in fact it is ONLY black people and NOT those of other ethnicities who are dying disproportionately at the hands of the police in the UK (as well as the US)

Black people are 2x more likely to die in police custody than people of any other ethnic group.

That is why OP is entitled to say that it is racism against blacks people that she wants to discuss and confront right now today.

Bringing up discrimination against travellers on this thread is like saying 'men get raped too' on a thread about sexual violence against women. It's true but it's offensive in the context.

lemonsandlimes123 · 06/06/2020 15:16

OP -I think the thread title you were looking for is
'You're white you cannot have an opinion' or even
"You're not me you cannot have an opinion'

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 15:16

So why not unite behind the Black Lives Matter movement? Right now they are hurting and angry and understandably so. It is time for all of us to get behind the movement, recognise our privilege and use it for good.
So true. This poster is conflicting. It is everyone's time to unite for *US. BLACK PEOPLE MATTER RIGHT NOW.

The only people creating division are the All Lives Matter bunch. *
Totally agree.*

Thank you for your emotional labour on this thread OP*
Thank you. It's had an effect so it's worth it!

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 15:18

@lemonsandlimes123
You don't wish to discuss. You want to feel important. I'm not giving it to you.
This is about us.
I'm no longer engaging with you.

No it isn't. It's like someone posting "only women get raped" and then someone posting " that isn't true, men get raped too".

If people don't want to see references to the Traveller community being victims of racism then they need to stop saying untruths like they don't suffer racism.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 06/06/2020 15:23

@lemonsandlimes123

OP -I think the thread title you were looking for is 'You're white you cannot have an opinion' or even "You're not me you cannot have an opinion'
Or "you can only have the opinion I allow you to have."
MadgeMak · 06/06/2020 15:24

Ironic.

Mintychoc1 · 06/06/2020 15:24

Oh sweet Jesus not more of these threads .
Don’t engage people - patricksrum won’t listen to anyone.
Waste of time and energy.
Thank

namechangegarden · 06/06/2020 15:24

You've done well here OP. I don't usually comment on race threads on MN, (although I did on the one asking for black people to share their experience as the OP seemed genuine). Why? Because it's too exhausting explaining over and over how Black people are treated in the UK, then being told you must be mistaken or there was another reason, and not being believed.

I was discussing the murder of George Floyd with a white colleague a couple of days ago, and spoke about a couple of racist instances I'd faced. She then burst into tears saying she had no idea this sort of thing happened in the UK. For context she is a very well educated lady with a senior job in finance, as am I. We've never discussed race before, and she said it had opened her eyes, so I do think there's merit in the dialogue continuing.

lemonsandlimes123 · 06/06/2020 15:24

OP - Of course i don't want to discuss you have made it abundantly clear this is not a thread for debate or discussion it is a thread for you to share your opinion . I am merely doing the same.

Yorkshirelass04 · 06/06/2020 15:24

Is racism all about skin colour?

Mintychoc1 · 06/06/2020 15:24

No idea where “thank” came from!
