You're white you haven't experienced racism 2 *title amended by MNHQ at OP's request*

I started a thread in the early hours.

I fell asleep Blush
I've checked the thread and it's full.

Whilst the thread sadly proves my OP, there were a lot of great posts and understanding by some MNers.

I think this discussion is so important and I'd like to continue.

These photos sum up the ridiculous responses.

Do not tell me I am doing my oppressed race a disservice
Your racial prejudice faced as a white person do not trump the daily racism and fear for our lives

Finally, if your response to this is to explain your tiny grievances of racial prejudices you've faced then you are wholly part of the problem.

The racist behaviours and thoughts by your people is the problem. It is your duty to understand and tackle it. I repeat, it is not the duty of black people to educate you.

Yet you expect white people to apologise for a murdering police officer in the US? What kind of nonsense is that?

Find me a post where I've said this. I'll wait.
@peppapots
What did you mean by this then?

We're talking about your race killing another of our people.**

Where have I said that white people should apologise for the actions of racists? You're not finding me a post where I've said this.

I'm speechless. Honestly speechless

I'm not convinced Hmm

@WhenISnappedAndFarted Great username!
Thank you. Thank you for standing with us. Most importantly, thank you for continuing to learn

Let me ask you how you would address someone who stood by whilst someone murdered your family?

You know damn well I was talking about Mumsnet posters when I said you were talking 'at' them rather than 'to' them 🙄

P999 · 04/06/2020 23:05

OP. There isn't a single person on this thread who isn't horrified, disgusted and repelled by what happened in the States. Yet you've managed to create an aggressive, divisive debate here. Is that what you wanted?

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 23:07

I am American, and white. I would be angry if I were the OP, too. We should All be angry about systemic racism towards blacks. Right now is just not the time for white people to be complaining and trotting out the old, "but, but, but...what about my experience?" Can't we for once just be quiet and try to understand the very real and painful experiences that blacks face everyday?
That's exactly it. I've said it before as have many others but can't we just have this?*

As far as the looting, that is not the BLM protestors. The looters are taking advantage of the unrest to commit crimes. Many of them aren't even from the cities they loot in.*
I did say before about a fb post where black people were protesting. Some of the white people in the protest began looting and smashing car windows etc. They were pleaded with by the other protestors to stop. They refused. As a result, police attended and it was ended.
Again, if it isn't obvious, this is not the fault of every single white person. Lots are aiding and standing up against racists. That's great!

No! Op wanted a large number of people to join her verbally bashing white people.
R1R2 · 04/06/2020 23:07

Are you wilfully being dense you commented on the "unarmed black man murdered by police" as a cause of the 2011 riots except that black man was a armed violent drug dealer planning a gun attack on a rival.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 04/06/2020 23:08

@PatricksRum

Let me ask you how you would address someone who stood by whilst someone murdered your family?

Who on here has done that?

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras What would your response be to them?

I really don't understand your question. What would I say to someone who stood by whilst someone murdered my family? I've got no idea. Why did they stand by? Who murdered them? As long as the bystander wasn't in some way connected with the murderer I don't know what I would say - should they have risked their own life to save my family? I don't know. Would I risk my life to save someone else's family? I don't know. I'd like to think.i would do something but would I when it came to it? So, if I couldn't do it I can't be angry at someone else not doing it.

My bil is a police officer. He was unarmed and tackled a man with a sawn off shotgun who was threatening to kill someone in the street. Could I have done the same? I doubt it very much.

OP. There isn't a single person on this thread who isn't horrified, disgusted and repelled by what happened in the States.
Excellent. Then fight it.

Yet you've managed to create an aggressive, divisive debate here. Is that what you wanted?
No. I haven't done that. I've stated my experiences and feelings. You, amongst others have then used this as an opportunity to make it about you and your experiences instead of listening.

Is that what you wanted?

Seems like it actually is, to be honest.

Right now is just not the time for white people to be complaining and trotting out the old, "but, but, but...what about my experience?" Can't we for once just be quiet and try to understand the very real and painful experiences that blacks face everyday?

If that's what OP was concerned about then why did she start a thread asking why white people don't understand that it's categorically impossible for them to experience racism? Seems a pretty stupid thread topic if you DON'T want to hear people talking about white people experiencing racism.

Where have I said that white people should apologise for the actions of racists? You're not finding me a post where I've said this.

So by you saying that our race has killed another one of your race you weren't expecting white people to apologise? What were you expecting then?

I've answered that so many times. I'm not doing it again.

Oh for crying out loud op. You made it about them by including the colour of their skin!

If you really wanted to raise awareness about BLM you could have done just that. Why mention the experiences of ‘white’ people at all? Of course it was going to cause debate and othering.

LesleysChestnutBob · 04/06/2020 23:14

@patricksrum

This is what you actually said so don't give me that shit about "I never said". You mention being shot at, like I said, not racial abuse.

Do you understand that you being able to step on a plane Is a privilege of your race?
You being able to step in a country without being shot at is a privilege of your race?
You even being able to choose whether to travel to the ME is a privilege of your race. We aren't able to live where we're from. Your ancestors pulled us and dumped us here. I wouldn't be able to safely travel to the US. You would.

Because it's white people that are killing black people!!!!!!
I thought that would be obvious

@YgritteSnow YOU are by far the most toxic person on this thread and the last. George Floyd was murdered by a police officer. Do you want to say anything about that?

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 23:20

@LesleysChestnutBob Sure and where did I say I couldn't get on a plane?
Being able to get on a plane and travel to a country without fear of being shot is a privilege of your race.

All white people killing all black people?

WomanIsTaken · 04/06/2020 23:21

But you don't think black people should have to help white people learn about black issues.

Didn't read further than this comment by Abbccc. Endemic, systemic racism is a white issue impacting and hurting BIPOC. White people need to wear and acknowledge this. Were it not for white people perpetuating and determined to hang onto the benefits of their privilege, there would be no issue for anyone to explain.

WhoAteAllTheWotsits · 04/06/2020 23:21

@YgritteSnow the only thing poisonous about this thread is the attitudes of people like you.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 23:21

Where did I say that?

OP posts:
Jangirl2018 · 04/06/2020 23:22

@Abbccc

You're saying that it's white people's duty to understand and do aomething about racism towards black people. But you don't think black people should have to help white people learn about black issues. I can't see how the two go together. Surely it would he better to work together to get it right?

Why should black people have to help? Who created the myth of white supremacy and perpetrated the brutal and savage treatment of those who are not white? Who set up structures and systems that ensure you are likely to have to work twice as hard just to survive. Don’t ask the people who didn’t create the problem to deconstruct it, that seems like a slap in the face.
