Doctor won't allow an ultrasound

Not really AIBU but posting for traffic as I don't know what to do and hope anyone who has been in a similar situation can give me some advice.

I've got an 11 month old DD, still breastfeeding 2-3 times a day, sometimes more at night when she's teething and finished maternity leave October last year. DP and I want a second child close in age so were TTC over October, November and the very beginning of December. We stopped when I started feeling ill because urine tests were coming back negative and we don't want to start a pregnancy until I was better. Since the birth, I have had one period in August and cramps but no actual period in September.

So, for the last 12 weeks I have had what I would describe as morning sickness - nausea 24/7, very regular d&v (often waking at 4am to rush to the bathroom) and finding myself suddenly repulsed by a meal in the middle of eating it. In addition to this, I've also had periods of insomnia where I've slept about 2 hours a night for a 3 to 5 days or not even slept at all and I've been having very frequent mood swings, getting very frustrated at the tiniest things which is really not like me - I'm normally a very laid back person and have only ever been like this during my last pregnancy. In the last month or so I've also been finding that I'm am knackered pretty much all the time and it's not because of the baby, thankfully my DP only works 2 nights a week will always insist on taking her to let me get some sleep so I get plenty of rest but even after sleeping 10+ hours I find myself needing a couple naps during the day which again is not like me at all - both before and after DD I used to get about 5 or 6 hours a night and that would be more than enough.

More recently over the last two weeks my boobs have been getting quite tender and I've been feeling flutters or spasms in my belly. My allergies are more sensitive and I cant seem to get comfortable in bed, often waking with backache - both of which I had pretty much throughout my last pregnancy.

The nausea and d&v have been so bad that I've been off work since this started, and I first went to the GP 2 later because it hadn't eased off. First thing they asked was am I pregnant, have I done a test. I told them I'd done a few and all negative so had bloods taken to check hCG levels. Came back as

Just pay for a private scan surely is the answer here? I think I'd have done that about 500 words ago!

Narcheska · 13/02/2020 20:50

Just pay for a private scan ...

RueDeWakening · 13/02/2020 20:51

Do you have an early pregnancy unit near you? Our local hospital has one, you just turn up to it if you experience bleeding or have pregnancy complications and they will (usually) do a scan. There's long waits though.

Lockheart · 13/02/2020 20:52

Can't you get one done privately?

imaflutteringkite · 13/02/2020 20:52

Am I correct that you last took a pregnancy test two months ago? Is it possibly you weren't pregnant then and had a stomach bug or something but you are pregnant now and that's why you still have symptoms? But I agree with a PP a private ultrasound does seem the obvious way forward here if a pregnancy test is negative.

namechangedpurelyforthis · 13/02/2020 20:52

A private scan costs about £80... go and have one

Gigitree · 13/02/2020 20:53

I agree I’d just go for a private scan just so you know for sure!

toysoldier · 13/02/2020 20:54

If the doctor won't give you one it's the only thing to do

HalfBiscuit · 13/02/2020 20:54

Can you pay for a private scan?

MadameJosephine · 13/02/2020 20:54

I’m sorry but the antenatal clinic are not going to agree to scan someone who thinks she might be pregnant despite multiple negative pregnant tests. If you really want a scan I’m afraid you’ll need to pay for one. There are plenty of private firms around these days and they aren’t very expensive.

Runkle · 13/02/2020 20:55

So pay for a private scan? Would have saved writing that essay Confused

zigzagbetty · 13/02/2020 20:55

Am I being a bit stupid here but cant you just take a pregnancy test?

namechanger2019 · 13/02/2020 20:55

I think the chances of you being pregnant are almost zero, but if you think 80% why aren't you having a private scan done?

DesLynamsMoustache · 13/02/2020 20:56

I know you say money is tight, but if you really believe you are pregnant and working in an unsafe environment then you should really try to find the money. From a doctor's perspective, someone with multiple negative blood tests is unlikely to be pregnant so I think it's unlikely you will get much further there. Have you had several tests since December? All negative? How pregnant do you think you are if you're feeling flutters?

Robstersgirl · 13/02/2020 20:56

My private scan last week was £60.

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 13/02/2020 20:56

You say a private scan would need to wait until you get paid but you've had symptoms for 12 weeks, why not get one sooner?

hauntedvagina · 13/02/2020 20:56

Came here to say the same as everyone else. Go for a private scan.

drinkygin · 13/02/2020 20:58

Scanning departments are very busy and I can understand why your gp won’t refer you- it’s extremely unlikely you’re pregnant and a scan would be wasteful. If you’re that concerned book a private one (about 30 quid). It does sound like it could be IBS.

heartsonacake · 13/02/2020 20:58

If you want this scan you are going to have to pay for it privately.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/02/2020 21:00

You could have had a private scan in the time it took to write that dissertation.

Ponoka7 · 13/02/2020 21:00

So have you been doing pregnancy tests?

My DD didn't show up on one until I could feel her move and had known I was pregnant for a couple of months.

If so, pay for a private scan.

Alpacamabags · 13/02/2020 21:00

I think you really need to go for a private scan. Also have you done a more recent test? I think it must be extremely unlikely that you are pregnant but agree you need to know either way

ShirleyPhallus · 13/02/2020 21:01

Another for a private scan - why haven’t you done that yet?

Berrymuch · 13/02/2020 21:02

Private scan.

Whyhaveidonethis · 13/02/2020 21:03

Private scans are £39 on Groupon. If you are that worried then but one.

I honestly think your doctor is correct and you have IBS but if it puts your mind at rest it's surely worth £39?

Also are you sure you aren't a bit depressed? Only saying this as I had low level depression and felt exhausted. My GP suggested I go for walks etc and it really did actually help.
