Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

AIBU?

@Lweji running mates will have nothing to do with who the democrats decide to run for President. Meaning the Democratic Nominee will be decided before his running mate is announced. No way will Biden pick Sanders and in no way will Bernie pick Biden

Leaannb · 06/03/2020 01:21

@Lweji We need to get rid of Obamacare. Its worthless

AcrossthePond55 · 06/03/2020 03:11

Leeannb The ACA saved my son's bacon when he had a breakdown and lost his job. He was able to get a good Blue Cross 80/20 plan for $126.00 per month. That plan paid virtually ALL his medical bills except for co-pays. My disabled cousin's premium for the same plan is $300.00 per month and has saved her $1000s over the private insurance she had (that had a $6000 deductible!). If someone got the same plan as private insurance it would be around $600.00 per month.

The ACA is NOT worthless. It needs fine tuning, but it's NOT worthless.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/03/2020 05:53

From my position across the pond, it is very clear that the ACA is a hell of a lot better than the big fat nothing Trump and his selfish mates want to provide.

Lweji · 06/03/2020 07:39

Yes, THE problem with health in the US is ACA.GrinGrinGrin

I suggest a comparison between health outcomes and cost in the US vs other countries with national health services for a reality check.

I'd love to know who is the "we" who must get rid of it. Hmm

I can only think of private interests and those with an interest in keeping the least wealthy unhealthy.

Lweji · 06/03/2020 07:40

Not Michelle?

We need to get rid of Obamacare. Its worthless

I found it quite handy as a self-employed person when I needed to buy an individual plan that covered pre-existing conditions, didn't penalise me for prior claims, and that would cover essential health benefits. I didn't receive any subsidies - paid my own way.

How very unAmerican of me :-)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/03/2020 16:59

As I understand it, not providing a basic standard of health-care for all without extra on-site charge (as eg provided by the NHS, the Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, the Protection Universelle Maladie (PUMA), the Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos) may prove to have been a false economy; people not getting tested for covid-19 because they can't afford a few hundred dollars to get it done can't be a good idea if what is wanted is to control the spread of a virus and of a panic about it.

It's entirely possible that the 6.5% plus death rate for covid-19 in the USA is because the milder cases are not being picked up, and are spreading it all over the place. If only the more serious ones get tested and join the statistics, and it is the more serious ones who are likely to die of it, then a higher death-rate than the global average is inevitable.

Lweji · 06/03/2020 17:14

Yes. I've seen in a report or comment by an expert that the US is time bomb.

FrankieStein402 · 06/03/2020 21:35

Trump sueing cnn - could cnn's lawyers request unredacted Mueller report in discovery? Beautiful irony if they did...

Heard a US professor (?) on the R4 Today prog during the week giving a very good description of how the fragmented US medical system would make it almost impossible to contain an epidemic. I was shocked at the costs he quoted for getting tested.

Lweji · 08/03/2020 08:08

Very good article. Thanks lion.
