This is an assumption that I have, and DH has just learned but is vehemently opposed to. He thinks crap is LESS sweary than fuck. WTF??!!

Crap is according to British public...

Crap is fine. I will say crap in front of the children but not fuck.
Although a friend of mine tells her kids off for saying "stupid" so I realise my standards are very low compared to some...

sarahC40 · 08/02/2020 08:16

That’s what I say in place of proper swear words. Don’t take that away from me! 😉

CalmdownJanet · 08/02/2020 08:16

I never thought of crap as a swear word at all until I joined mn a few years ago

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 08/02/2020 08:18

Crap is 5/10, fuck is 8/10 on my sweary scale. I’d say crap in front of my mum but not my grandma.

WishICouldThinkOfAGoodName · 08/02/2020 08:19

Crap is not a swear word.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 08/02/2020 08:19

I don't think of crap as a swear word at all Blush

AhoyMrBeaver · 08/02/2020 08:19

Crap isn't classed as swearing in my house or workplace.

GinNotGym19 · 08/02/2020 08:20

My dd tells me off if I say crap because they aren’t allowed to say it at school. She’s 7 and thinks it’s one of the worst words haha.

Showercurtain · 08/02/2020 08:20

Crap is 5/10, fuck is 8/10 on my sweary scale. I’d say crap in front of my mum but not my grandma.

This!

opticaldelusion · 08/02/2020 08:21

It's less sweary if people think it's less sweary. That's how language works. You can't make unilateral decisions about the meaning of words.

And most people will see crap as lower in the heirarchy of swear words than fuck. So it's less sweary.

Bipbipbipbip · 08/02/2020 08:22

No. Crap isn't really swearing. It's like the gateway to swearing.

PineappleDanish · 08/02/2020 08:22

I came across a parent once who put "I'm really knackered" in the same category as "i'm fucking tired".

Agree that on the swear-o-meter, crap is a 3 out of 10, damn or bloody about a 5, fuck around 8 and the c-word which I find the most offensive of all, a 10.

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 08/02/2020 08:23

@Boom45 I don't let my DC say stupid - not because it's swearing, but because it's unkind.

TitianaTitsling · 08/02/2020 08:24

This reminds me of the Inbetweeners episode 'mum and dad don't like swearing Simon'...... 'Oh, crap. Is crap a swear word? Crap?' crap is nowhere near fuck as a 'rude word'!!

Sally872 · 08/02/2020 08:24

Crap is 2/10 on swearing scale for me. Fuck is 8/10.

I would teach my dd not to say but not be that fussed if I overheard her. Perfectly acceptably response from me or dp to each other.

Newmetoday · 08/02/2020 08:24

I let my 12 year old say crap. It isn’t swearing in the slightest

Vehivle · 08/02/2020 08:26

Of course crap is less sweary than fuck. What word do you live in?

SuddenArborealStop · 08/02/2020 08:26

Crap is not even a swear how can anyone think its the same as fuck Hmm

Firstawake · 08/02/2020 08:27

I hope you are going to tell him he is right.

Mummyzzz044 · 08/02/2020 08:27

I thought crap was used as a nicer word than shit Hmm

theendoftheendoftheend · 08/02/2020 08:27

When I was young I thought crap was The C word, I still find it suspicious.
Quite happy to say cunt though Confused

iheartislesofwight · 08/02/2020 08:29

wonder if thomas crapper [historical plumber] would be offended ? Grin

Boom45 · 08/02/2020 08:30

@onlyoneoftheregimentinstep I don't like my children saying it about people, like you I don't like them to be unkind, but I have no problem with them saying it about stuff. My DS told me the floor was stupid the other day when he tripped over...

BigChocFrenzy · 08/02/2020 08:31

"Crap isn't really swearing. It's like the gateway to swearing."

Exactly
I could say "crap" to almost anyone I know, but "fuck" or "cunt" are reserved for being muttered under my breath
