Crap is as sweary as fuck

This is an assumption that I have, and DH has just learned but is vehemently opposed to. He thinks crap is LESS sweary than fuck. WTF??!!

I don't think Who Gives a Crap toilet paper would have got off the ground if crap were as sweary as fuck. I mean, I'd probably have still bought it, but advertising would have been nigh-on impossible.

lilyheather1 · 08/02/2020 08:57

Crap is the weed of the swearing world.

lilyheather1 · 08/02/2020 08:58

But in my circles, cunt is no big deal either.

SmallChickBilly · 08/02/2020 08:59

Also my neighbours used to be Mr and Mrs Crapper. That made me chuckle. But if it was that bad wouldn't they change their name? You very rarely meet Mr and Mrs Fucker.....

In fact, I think AnyFucker is probably the only one I've come across! We know a Mr Lilycrap- I'd probably be more inclined to hang out with him if he was Mr Lilyfuck.

eandz13 · 08/02/2020 08:59

I've never thought it a proper swear word.
1/10: crap, bugger, balls, arse, bloody
6/10: shit, fuck, piss, bastard
10/10: cunt, twat

moochew · 08/02/2020 09:00

It's as rude as poo - just someone's name, shortened . Why is "bloody" rude - have googled and no one seemed to know for sure.

Phillipa12 · 08/02/2020 09:02

Crap and damn it, are mild swear words
Bollocks and shit are medium swear words
Cunt and fuck are serious swear words.
In my house i correct my dc when they say bum, its bottom, it just sounds so much nicer coming from the mouth of a 4 year old. Same goes for gods sake, its goodness sake and stupid, its silly sometimes, never stupid!

1066vegan · 08/02/2020 09:10

Bloody is rude because it's short for By Our Lady (ie Mary). People used to "swear" by something (same meaning as to "swear in" a witness). I think that bloody/by our lady goes back to medieval times; at least as far back as the Tudors.

These words were seen as profanities so the word swear became synonymous with profanity.

Words considered offensive have usually been those connected with sex, bodily functions or blasphemous.

BlimeyCalmDown · 08/02/2020 09:10

It's definitely not a swear word, about the same as damn.

When I was growing up I wasn't allowed to even say e.g. shut up, bloody, even bum! but I was allowed to say crap. Grin

moochew · 08/02/2020 09:14

@1066vegan Also read that bloody may have been a reference to menstruation and somewhere else to injuries on the battlefield. It doesn't seem in anyway offensive now...a bit like saying Oh sugar or fiddlesticks.

moochew · 08/02/2020 09:17

And growing up - we said Oh God! all the time - my kids were told not to say it at school they say Oh my days - which I hate, it sounds so twee.

northernknickers · 08/02/2020 09:17

I was 'told off' by a man on Tinder for saying crap...seriously 😂. We'd exchanged a few messages, all seemed fine, then a couple of days in, he sent the usual 'how's your day been?'

I'd had a truly awful day...I'd been observed teaching, twice, by Ofsted inspectors, two of my SEND children had had massive meltdowns (not their fault btw, but I was on my own with 32 x 5 and 6 year olds at the time, so it can be tricky). One of our fabulous teachers had been so anxious about the inspection that she broke down halfway through being observed and had to leave the classroom (yes, it can be that stressful). All in all a pretty challenging day. My TA was off sick, nobody to cover, and I'd just been told that she wasn't in the following day, for Day 2 of Ofsted 😰

So, I said in reply 'it's been a bit crap really!' His response: I'm shocked that you, a teacher, would use such foul language! It's not a word I'd ever use myself and I'm surprised that a woman would, never mind a woman who is supposed to be a role model to young children!

I don't think we have much of a future, to be honest 🤷‍♀️

Where on the swear scale do you place these Scottish swearys:
Fud
Fanny
Bawbag
Fandan

happycamper11 · 08/02/2020 09:27

DD10 said damn it in a light hearted way while we were at her friends house and friends mum was horrified. I'd never been taught it was bad

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 08/02/2020 09:32

Its not a word i use that much, though i do swear...a lot

But I don’t swear in front of the children, but years ago...

Dd : you do swear in front of us

Me: no i dont

Dd: yes you do you said the C word

Me: i have never ever said the C word near you

Dd: yes you have, you told us to get our Crap off the stairs

QuizzlyBear · 08/02/2020 09:33

I always thought of crap as being a very low-key swear word - until I heard my toddler son say it. Made me cringe.

I taught my kids that, unlike fuck or shit, it's an 'adult word' that just doesn't sound right coming from a child.

They were fine with that (of course now they're teens I know they swear like sailors on leave with their friends), though I must confess when they were pre-teen I also didn't let them call people stupid or ugly, so it may be that I was a bit hardline.

QuizzlyBear · 08/02/2020 09:35

Mind you, I don't consider bloody or bugger to be swears. I use them a LOT!

onedayiwilllaugh · 08/02/2020 09:35

Crap and bloody are not bad swear words in my house, although I hardly ever say crap but bloody I say a lot

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/02/2020 09:37

It’s not a swear as such but I wouldn’t use it in front of children. But then I see knackered as the same.

I do buy Who Gives a Crap toilet paper but I don’t take the box into school (I’m a teacher and reception love a good box).

QuizzlyBear · 08/02/2020 09:37

Plus damn is only a swear if you're religious or American (so both).

My DS went on a trip to the US and got ripped a new one by his aunt for saying goddamn it. He had absolutely no clue why.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/02/2020 09:39

I am so unfamiliar with these words they're equivalent to foreign swear words to me. I have no concept of rating scales for them!

LakieLady · 08/02/2020 09:43

Crap is not a swear. It's a noun and a verb. In our (adults only) house, we "go for a crap" because going "for a poo" sounds childish.

Mind you, we fuck and cunt with gay abandon, so some would think our standards are a bit low. But a colleague maintains it doesn't sound sweary when we swear, because (apparently) we sound posh when we do it!

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 08/02/2020 09:43

Crap is not a swear word imo, both my children say it and I don't have any issues

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 08/02/2020 09:43

Your DH is right

Crap is barely even a swear word on my scale
Fuck is .

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 08/02/2020 09:44

Nah... fuck is at least an 8/10. Maybe even 9/10. If You want a lower reading go for fuck's cuter, fluffier sibling - feck.

Crap is barely sweary at all. It's like saying bugger or tits. I'd give it a 2/10
