Crap is as sweary as fuck

This is an assumption that I have, and DH has just learned but is vehemently opposed to. He thinks crap is LESS sweary than fuck. WTF??!!

@moochew I think the "by our lady" explanation is most likely because there are so many similar expressions eg the old fashioned exclamation "swounds!" comes from "gods wounds".

Agree that bloody is generally considered pretty inoffensive these days. My dad said it in front of us when we were little and I've never heard him swear. But I still wouldn't want to hear very young children say it and I wouldn't use it in front of the kids that I teach.

Kolo · 08/02/2020 09:48

I am so unfamiliar with these words they're equivalent to foreign swear words to me. I have no concept of rating scales for them!

My DH comes from a country with piss poor swear words so they've taken a few English ones to expand their repertoire, only they don't get the rating scale. They say fuck like it's crap. I have to constantly remind them not to say fuck in front of my kids. And I'll never live down the shame of when my DH said fuck in front of my dad.

Chocmallows · 08/02/2020 09:54

I would class crap with shit and god. I say shit or god when I'm in the wrong lane or drop something and crap if I think something has gone badly. I would only use fuck if something is really wrong.

WhatKatyDidNot · 08/02/2020 10:05

Crap is too unsweary for it even to be in my swearing vocabulary. 1/10.

edwardcullensotherwoman · 08/02/2020 10:14

I dont think of crap as a bad swear word tbh, just a minor curse. My 11 yo says it and it doesn't hugely bother me, if I heard him say fuck I'd be having words though!
He said "oh crap" in front of his entire class last week when the teacher asked where his tie was (we'd had a stressful morning and neither of us noticed he'd forgotten it Blush) his class laughed and the teacher brushed it off (well, he didn't get detention as per school rules for swearing anyway)

Maverick101 · 08/02/2020 10:14

Ned Flanders... is that you...?

DeadButDelicious · 08/02/2020 10:32

Crap isn't a swear word. Neither is arse or bloody.

I've given up shit and fuck (in the presence of small ears) but you aren't having arse and bloody. I need them. Grin

moochew · 08/02/2020 10:46

I say bugger a lot - actually the dog gets called a little bugger a lot - as in he's bugging me...it somehow doesn't feel as sweary as fucker - but I guess it is.

Wannabegreenfingers · 08/02/2020 10:54

Not even in the same ball park.

I can't get upset with people using swear words in the right context. Every other world in a sentence is just boring. Stub you toe or bash your elbow a well placed 'fuck' is definitely needed.

lengthenmylutealphase · 08/02/2020 13:39

@moochew that's not what bugger means 😂

moochew · 08/02/2020 13:47

I n know what bugger means - surely we have two meanings for the same word though 😁

iklboo · 08/02/2020 17:04

I get @moochew 's version - bugger = one who bugs Grin

StarlightLady · 08/02/2020 17:11

@Wannabegreenfingers - re right context. Sometimes l do need to say not fuck but fuck me GrinWink!

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 08/02/2020 17:22

Where on the swear scale do you place these Scottish swearys:
Fud
*
Fanny
Bawbag
Fandan*

Fanny depends on the context - we use it to mean a bit daft or in the same way we'd use arsehole/dickhead

The others I'd put at around 4 on the scale I wouldn't like the kids using them & would say so but I wouldn't get overly worked up about it.

Crap not a swear word but my mum hates it & tells us so when we've use it

Fuck definitely a swear word we get a skelp round the lug for that one

WhatKatyDidNot · 08/02/2020 17:36

Bawbag gets 10/10 for being funny. I think all swearys should be ranked on how funny they sound when you say them.

squishedgrapes · 08/02/2020 17:43

Crap is not swearing, it's just like the word shit

PreggoFeminist86 · 08/02/2020 17:44

Crap is not even slightly as sweary as fuck (tbh I don't consider it a swear word ar all).

NotYourTypicalNerd · 08/02/2020 17:46

Bloody is not a swear word. In Australia, the slogan is "drink and drive and you're a bloody idiot" on massive signs all over the place. But then, they also have signs saying "don't be a W, don't drink and drive" so we may be more laid back!

iklboo · 08/02/2020 17:47

What is 'Fud' in Scottish dialect - and any particular area?

NotYourTypicalNerd · 08/02/2020 17:47

There is also the famous Toyota bugger ad that was shown all the time too!

UndertheCedartree · 08/02/2020 17:53

Not in my book. I swear in front of my kids, though. They are just words. Swearing at people is not ok, though. So 'you piece of crap!' Or 'you fucking bastard' - not ok.

pigsDOfly · 08/02/2020 18:03

Crap is a very mild swear word 1/10. I use bollocks a lot, which I would rate as about 3/10. Fuck I save for real annoyances.

Someone up thread mentioned damn, don't think that's been considered 'rude' since about 1845.

TreacherousPissFlap · 08/02/2020 18:08

I love that MNers have a "sweary gauge" on which they plot various profanities Grin

For me crap is a swear word (because that's how I was raised) but far more minor. I swear profoundly in the right situation so frankly couldn't care less and am reaping my rewards now as 15yo DS drops the F-bomb all the time

Babdoc · 08/02/2020 18:12

I was on a bus in Edinburgh once, when a very posh chap with his (about 3 year old) daughter got on.
The little girl uttered the word “Bum” when not allowed to sit at the front.
Daddy admonished her :” We do not say bum! Bum is a sweary word.”
The little girl looked at him scornfully.
“Bum’s not a sweary word”, she told him, in a beautifully upper crust Edinburgh accent.
There was a short pause before she added, helpfully “Fuck’s a sweary word!”
Daddy put his head in his hands as the whole bus wet themselves laughing... it made my day!
