This is an assumption that I have, and DH has just learned but is vehemently opposed to. He thinks crap is LESS sweary than fuck. WTF??!!

Crap isn't sweaty enough for me - you either swear or you don't, anything in between is a bit useless and crap isn't a very satisfying word in my opinion. So it's fuck or nothing in this house.

laudete · 08/02/2020 18:23

I believe "crap" means "rubbish". It is also a losing move in craps (the game). Although I have just looked it up in a dictionary and am somewhat delighted to learn it derives from the Anglo-Latin "crappa" or chaff, which means "residue from rendering fat" and also "dregs of beer". Mind you, I would definitely consider fat residue and beer dregs to be rubbish.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/02/2020 18:27

squishedgrapes Crap is not swearing, it's just like the word shit

Well, Shit's a proper sweary word! Higher than Damn and bloody. IMO.

It's not up there with

Cuntfuckbastardshitwankerarsetwat (my last expletive after barefoot kicking the metal ladder of DS's bed).

Crap isn’t a swear word at all. It means rubbish around here. Example: “please move your crap off the table”... it might be used for a level of annoyance but that’s it.

icansmellburningleaves · 08/02/2020 18:43

Crap is not sweary at all. Fuck is definitely sweary.

DukeChatsworth · 08/02/2020 18:48

I don’t think ‘stupid’ should always be banned either. Calling someone stupid is mean. But if DD did something that nearly lost her a limb then I’d tell her it was a bloody stupid thing to do. Sometimes stupid is exactly the right word. It doesn’t mean a person IS stupid.

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/02/2020 19:04

Crap isn't a swear word

Yeahnah2020 · 08/02/2020 19:06

Crap is nowhere near the same level as Fuck. Don’t be insane!!

FeckTheMagicDragon · 08/02/2020 19:18

How about ‘berk’? I used to think it just meant a fool. Apparently it from Cockney rhyming slang and means cunt!!

BarbedBloom · 08/02/2020 19:24

I don't think it is swearing and my own nan used to say it.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 08/02/2020 19:29

Crap can be used in films rated PG.
Whereas if they say Fuck the film is rated 15. Therefore, Fuck is officially considered swearier than crap by a significant margin.

I work in a school and I could get away with using the word crap in front of my Sixth Formers but definitely couldn't say Fuck in front of them. Actually, I did once let a "fuck" slip out in front of some younger students when I dropped something heavy on my foot but fortunately, none of them grassed me up Grin

wanderings · 08/02/2020 19:30

If in doubt, say "crapulation" to be on the safe side. I know somebody who did this as a way of polite swearing.

Isn't Thomas Crapper credited with inventing the toilet, or is that a myth?

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/02/2020 19:58

Nevermind blaming your parents have you been living in a nunnery?!

I noticed people used it, I just graciously allowed it Grin

I don’t see crap as a swear word at all, maybe it would get a 1/10 out on a sweary scale but I can’t think of many circumstances I wouldn’t be happy to use it.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 08/02/2020 20:05

I don’t like swearing, which my teen dc respect, and don’t swear around me. I wouldn’t be too bothered by cr@p and use it occasionally myself, but wouldn’t use the f word at all.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 08/02/2020 20:12

After a bit of a debate DH and I have concluded that the scale of sweariness, from least sweary to most sweary goes

Damn
Bloody
Crap
Arse
Shit
Piss
Bugger
Bollocks
Wanker
Twat
Fuck
Cunt

MyNewBearTotoro · 08/02/2020 20:15

Interesting. I thought about how shocked I would be if my 6yo DD came out with each word and think my list would go:

Crap
Damn
Bugger
Bloody
Piss
Twat
Arse
Dick
Bollocks
Shit
Wanker
Fuck
Cunt

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 08/02/2020 20:19

I completely forgot about Dick! I think I'd put Dick as worse than Bollocks but not as bad as wanker.

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 08/02/2020 20:31

I have said crap, damn, pants in front of children at school. I have not said piss, shit, bloody, and certainly not fuck or cunt. I am quite sweary, but never swear at people. If you're swearing at people, stupid is just rude as fuck.

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 08/02/2020 20:33

I was a tiny bit shocked when my nine year old son said piss instead of wee the other day and told him not to say it. I wouldn't mind crap.

MyNewBearTotoro · 08/02/2020 20:36

To be honest I think I am quite sweaty though, cunt is the only swear word I don’t often use as part of my vocabulary with friends. It’s the only one I think occasionally manages to have a little of the shock factor behind it for me when I hear it.
