I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

No. The flu kills more each year apparently and that doesn't get the same hysteria this is getting. Obviously I mean over here and not in China where I can imagine people are out of their minds with worry.

BentNeckLady · 04/02/2020 06:50

Not especially. There are so many think that could kill us that if we spend time worrying about them
All we’d literally not have time to live our lives.

Frownette · 04/02/2020 06:50

No, just worried about the people who've contracted it

IvyBush123 · 04/02/2020 06:51

We are vaccinated against the flu. Otherwise I might worry about it.
In the small town my parents lived a healthy man in his twenties died from the flu two years ago - but Coronavirus seems to be worse. Never heard of whole cities quarantined because of the flu.

Yanbu but no, I’m not worried(live in UK). Just keep washing your hands regularly when out (with hot water and soap) and try not to touch your eyes, mouth, nose. If I was vulnerable and lived in China or worked in an airport I might worry a bit.

Skyejuly · 04/02/2020 06:55

The vaccine won't protect you?

I'm actually worried. I think in 10days time a far different picture will be painted.

DrDreReturns · 04/02/2020 06:57

Personally I'm not worried.

Weallfloatdownhere · 04/02/2020 06:58

There isn’t a vaccination for coronavirus. The flu jab offers no protection against it.

scaevola · 04/02/2020 06:59

I don't know yet.

How fast it's spreading and the rates of death/serious complications, plus time taken to recover are not known for sure yet.

It's spread more widely and taken more lives than SARS, so it's rightly being seen as a cause for concern.

As it's a whole new strain, with (it seems) significant differences to others. So unlike flu, there won't be any people who have some immunity from related strains.

Sadiesnakes · 04/02/2020 07:00

Maybe read the other 3 threads asking the exact same thing?🙄

DisasterMagnet · 04/02/2020 07:00

No. Death rate is about 2%, the death rate of swine flu was 38%. There’s only been two cases here in the UK.

IvyBush123 · 04/02/2020 07:01

@Skyejuly Sorry, I did not want to say the the flu shot protected against the Coronavirus.
We are all vaccinated against the flu. So I do not worry about the flu. Otherwise I might be worried because the flu is a dangerous illness. That’s what I wanted to say.
I know the flu vaccination does not protect against Coronavirus.... on the other hand: the man who died in HongKong was infected with corona and the flu at the same time. May be he would be still alive if he had been vaccinated against the flu and his body didn’t have to fight both at the same time.

Not hugely, I have type one diabetes so I catch absolutely everything and I’m still not particularly worried.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 04/02/2020 07:02

With only 2 people in the uk being tested for if. What do you do if you come down with a but of a cold. It is the season after all. I don't think there is enough information out there to distinguish how to tell if you should be tested.

slipperywhensparticus · 04/02/2020 07:04

Two people have tested positive I'm cautious about it

Nousernameforme · 04/02/2020 07:09

First symptoms are a temperature and a dry cough so not really typical of a cold.

Honestly I do wonder how much China terrible air quality has to do with people dying if this. If you have a population that lives with dirty air and the associated lung issues we know this brings, that must have some contribution to the complications of this virus.

Plus it's a game of numbers the more people that have contracted the virus the bigger chance that some are going to be vulnerable.

IvyBush123 · 04/02/2020 07:09

Do you think that there are people who have it but have not been Estes because gp thinks they have the glue or normal pneumonia?

OP posts:
SilverySurfer · 04/02/2020 07:09

No. Just the endless threads about it.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 04/02/2020 07:14

No, not worried about it. From what I understand the virus is dangerous to the people who are elderly/already poorly - pretty much like any influenza.
I'd stop watching the news, it's been whipped up into a frenzy (as usual).

AuntieMarys · 04/02/2020 07:15

Not at all

AnyOldSpartabix · 04/02/2020 07:16

Bit worried about my Dad as he’s old and I want to spend next Christmas with my parents as I have been prevented from doing that for years. He might die of something else anyway. It’d be one more regret in my life, but not the end of the world.

Other than that, watching with a kind of grim fascination, but there’s nothing much I can do about it, so worrying is pointless. These scares emerge every few years and I guess eventually one of them might turn out to be a hideous pandemic with high mortality, but I’ve lived through quite a few now and have enough other things to worry about that I don’t have much head space for this.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/02/2020 07:18

I'm getting worried about, also about it's impact on the economy, and on the environment, with the millions of face masks being used.

PhilCornwall1 · 04/02/2020 07:20

Don't care a jot about it and I'm immunocompromised, so if I get it, I'm probably dead. Mrs PC will be comfortably off if I get it and pop off.

Being worried isn't going to help you.

TheoriginalLEM · 04/02/2020 07:20

I have health anxiety and im really not worried in the slightest. Every year tgere is a new virus.

Antibiotic resistance- that worries me
