I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

What are the symptoms?? I haven't actually heard anyone report the symptoms

It's been all over the news since it started.

WellHolyGodMiley · 04/02/2020 07:55

Also yes kids and I all have asthma. My mum has had chemo in the last year. Both my parents 75 or 76

Lweji · 04/02/2020 07:55

Yes and no.
It's not airborne ebola, but if it goes pandemic like the flu then it's on top of it.
I'm glad the WHO and China are working to stop it spreading.
Don't think it needs prepping or walking around everywhere with masks.

healthylifestylee · 04/02/2020 07:56

Only because I work in healthcare. So if people think they have it they could come in and infect myself and my team.
Very low chances of this as first they need to catch Coronavirus which isnt likely

I'm also not overly worried. Slight bit of concern but really I know I'm a fairly healthy person and have access to good healthcare so it could be caught quickly and treated well

As with flu the at risk groups are vaccinated I would assume we have the same at risk groups now so encouraging children to wash their hands and teaching good hygiene in regard to coughs and sneezes which we can all do to help each other
Face masks aren't proven to be any help as it's not know to be airbourne

WellHolyGodMiley · 04/02/2020 07:57

Risk groups arent vaccinated against coronavirus!

PooWillyBumBum · 04/02/2020 07:58

No, I’m not elderly or immunocompromised. For the vast majority of fit and healthy people it’s a horrible illness which is recovered from pretty quickly. There was an English chap on radio 4 last night talking about it (he had it in December) and the effects on the Chinese city he lives in and it made me realise just how hysterical the media are being.

xsquared · 04/02/2020 08:00

I am more concerned about the increase in anti Chinese sentiment because of this. There is so much misinformation and fake news about, and the DM and their ilk are printing stuff that's not directly related to the virus that is only reinforcing negative stereotypes about Chinese people.

AllHeart1 · 04/02/2020 08:00

We are vaccinated against the flu. Otherwise I might worry about it. you are vaccinated against one strain of the flu. There are still thousands of others you could and might catch. It’s just the most prevalent one they vaccinate against.

I’m not remotely worried about the virus and I have a life-limiting illness which was, ironically, exacerbated by me catching .... the flu a few years ago which put me in a coma and showed that I had a genetic condition which had additional complications following the virus.

However, worrying isn’t going to achieve anything. If you’re going to catch it then you’re going to catch it. You could equally get hit by a car tomorrow, something which is far more likely.

We all have to die of something.

Lweji · 04/02/2020 08:02

I will stay inside for 3 weeks

And catch it was it's going pandemic? If you're going to panic might as well wait until it actually starts spreading in your area.

AllHeart1 · 04/02/2020 08:03

There is so much misinformation and fake news about, and the DM and their ilk are printing stuff that's not directly related to the virus that is only reinforcing negative stereotypes about Chinese people. I started a thread about this the other day and was absolutely slated for suggesting it.

WellHolyGodMiley · 04/02/2020 08:03

"We all have to die of something"

Well that is comforting. Ill stop worrying. I would like to die of old age but sure fekk it, If i die of coronavirus at 49, that's grand.

🤔🙄🙈

WellHolyGodMiley · 04/02/2020 08:05

Define "anti-chinese"
Is that discussing the practices that lead to the virus?

Let's shut down all discussion so.

xsquared · 04/02/2020 08:05

I think I saw that one Allheart1 and was surprised by the majority vote.

WellHolyGodMiley · 04/02/2020 08:06

@Lweji well yes. Ill have to hope i get the timingbright

xsquared · 04/02/2020 08:10

Holly, did I mention anything about practices?
No, it's about the way strangers treat you and whisper "Coronavirus" at you when you walk by because you're Chinese. I got my first comment the other week. My friend was in the I newspaper the other week talking about how her and her children have been treated.

PlomBear · 04/02/2020 08:11

Life is too short to worry.

AllHeart1 · 04/02/2020 08:15

@WellHolyGodMiley but it’s highly, highly unlikely you’re going to catch it and even if you do, it’s highly, highly unlikely that you’re going to die of it.

Nobody wants to die younger, but worrying about it isn’t going to change that fact if that is what happens.

If you worried about all the things that you could die from you wouldn’t spend any time living. So best to just get on with your life.

And FWIW I am going to die of heart failure unless I get a heart transplant. For now I am in relatively ok health but there will come a time when I won’t be. I’ve experienced enough about life and the things that can go wrong in the past couple of years, including being clinically dead on more than one occasion to realise that if your number’s up then you have little control over that.

That doesn’t mean we wish illness and death on people, but it does mean that we need to be realistic to the possibilities, and protect against those we actually do have some control over e.g. road safety. The Coronavirus isn’t even a blip here. The infection amount is minimal in a world population, and the death rate is negligible..

NemophilistRebel · 04/02/2020 08:17

We have excellent healthcare in Uk so generally I’m not worried

But the people who say they aren’t worried because in Uk we have will get the treatment we need seem to be a bit deluded as there isn’t a cure yet

RhymingRabbit3 · 04/02/2020 08:18

I'm not worried. If you spend time worrying about every little thing that could potentially kill you, nothing would ever get done. More chance of dying from flu, a car accident, falling down the stairs

AllHeart1 · 04/02/2020 08:19

Is that discussing the practices that lead to the virus? no. It’s things like avoiding going to the local takeaway because what if there’s a Chinese person in there who has been to china.

Shouting “go home” to people who are Chinese, spraying antibacterial spray in the faces of Chinese people lest they have the virus.

The practices can be discussed but equally those practices are relevant to the country and as such we can also acknowledge that due to us not having the same practices we are far less vulnerable

And you could get run over by a bus or car or fall down the stairs today, tomorrow, etc. and die from the injuries. Is that something to worry about as well?

woodchuck99 · 04/02/2020 08:38

We know that the chances of getting run over by a bus or car in the near future on an individual level are fairly slim. We don't know this about the coronavirus. It is spreading and things could get a lot worse. Worrying about it does achieve something as far as I'm concerned because it would perhaps make the authorities take a bit more action.

They seem to have pretty good healthcare in China but it hasn't prevented people from dying in hospital. They have good healthcare in Hong Kong but 39-year-old man has just died.

PhilCornwall1 · 04/02/2020 08:44

I think there would be a very slim chance of that. I am sure they would just tell you to follow the guidelines already released.
