I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

  • should read not go on to have pneumonia
RapidRainbow · 10/02/2020 15:43

I'm doing a good job of keeping my anxiety in check but find this thread like crack Blush I think we're all just hoping to read about some extreme shut down of the country until the outbreak passes! Understand the government cannot yet react in an extreme way even though it would probably help. Will crap myself when it stops being so traceable. Remember Swine Fly though, that passed without the major fears coming true.

RapidRainbow · 10/02/2020 15:44

I had a small parcel from China delivered last week, I've shot it into a cupboard to remain in quarantine for a good few weeks Blush I've got a few more I'm waiting on too, I expect I will do them same with those.

PotholeParadise · 10/02/2020 15:49

How long did the parcel take to get here from China?

RapidRainbow · 10/02/2020 15:54

Before I get sucked into a state of dispair I am going to hide this thread and stay away from newspaper websites. I know from experience when I am really busy and pay less attention to these things they don't affect me so much, I believe the anxiety takes hold when you are not busy and have not got much else to focus on. Its definitely true for me - I worried about the end of the world 2012 prediction but started a full time very busy professional job in 2010 and was so busy in 2012 that I pushed it to the back of my head and even managed to go to work that day and take my child to school.

I've been there before with Swine Flu IIRC, felt like it was a terrible catastrophe I was about to witness and noone else seemed to realise so please rest assured if you feel this way now its just your anxiety playing with you. I understand this can be catch 22 as everything about you right now is feeling like you just wnat to stay home in a safe bubble but you must fill your time and find a new healthier obsession. Xx

RapidRainbow · 10/02/2020 15:55

@PotholeParadise

Probably about 5 weeks. I know I am being ridiculous you don't need to tell me Grin

I took my son to hospital for a suspected broken big toe yesterday and was slightly freaked out by the corona virus precautions. I'm not in the UK, I think we've only had 1 confirmed case here. I took him to the acute department and doors were locked. You had to use an intercom and confirm that you hadn't been abroad and didn't have any flu like symptoms before they'd buzz you in. It was very unnerving.

justdeckingthehalls1 · 10/02/2020 16:01

Nemo, have you got a link for the confirmed Southampton and Royal Free cases? Does that make 12 now?

Oblomov20 · 10/02/2020 16:02

Nope. Why should I worry?

Oblomov20 · 10/02/2020 16:04

Besides, I'm blasé about death. If it's my time, it's my time. If I died tomorrow, I'd had a good life.

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 16:04

justdeckingthehalls1 - here is link to the southampton ones -

www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/18224368.amp/?__twitter_impression=true

the royal free 3 are part of the brighton already confirmed cases so that doesnt add to the total tally. just the new southampton ones.

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/02/2020 16:10

I'd find that reassuring tbh that they are taking it serious enough to try prevent it entering the department.

justdeckingthehalls1 · 10/02/2020 16:10

Thanks

It's a bit wishy washy that article. Doesn't say if they're definitely positive or if it's just a precaution. Also, if they are positive, what's the point in just shutting the school for three days?! Surely anyone in contact with the affected people who might have picked it up will just bring it in in three days and spread it? Wouldn't they need to close for two weeks to prevent any spread?

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 16:12

it does, and the article is also in the guardian

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 16:12

theres plenty of news reporting on it and its easy to find

www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/feb/10/coronavirus-live-updates-china-goes-back-to-work-as-cases-exceed-40000-latest-news

www.portsmouth.co.uk/health/coronavirus-hampshire-school-closes-students-are-placed-hospital-isolation-1398023

they are in hospital isolation, not at home self isolating

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 16:14

guardian have changed their report to 'reported case' rather than confirmed cases

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 16:15

its good the school is taking action when many other boarding schools have warned that children shouldnt go back to china for the holidays and if they do they wont be allowed to return until self isolated for a few weeks

RandomlyChosenName · 10/02/2020 16:21

Brighton Man has an amazingly active social life. Singapore conference, skiing, pub, community centre at least in a couple of weeks.

My spreading would be linked to work and the school run! I haven’t been anywhere else in the last couple of weeks.

I know it’s not really funny...

Emmabryant123 · 10/02/2020 16:25

This is the last time I'm going to look at this thread
The Southampton kids have not been confirmed to have coronavirus.

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 16:32

yes thats correct emma - id mentioned that upthread.
guardian had changed their report

FourTeaFallOut · 10/02/2020 16:33

Running yoga classes, skiing, private schools. I think I might be able to dodge the coronavirus by avoiding artisanal bread shops at this rate.

NemophilistRebel · 10/02/2020 16:34

@RandomlyChosenName it is unusual though, but in a way good news that its all traceable so far to this one man.

if he was a london commuter using the tube then it would be worrying to me. not because i go to london, but because so many people commute to and from london daily across the whole country using tube and train etc.

i dont use public transport a lot, but i plan to stick to my car only until this is under control

I’m thinking if a person got flu AND corona that would be bad...?

One of the deaths in the phillipines was found to have coronavirus, the flu and strep infections. Given that he was young (29 I think?), I'm guessing that it's bad.
