I am not sure if there is reason to worry about the new Coronavirus. I am not a medical expert but to be honest feel a bit scared because we know so little and some experts seem worried. How do you think?

Nope. I think it has been blown out of proportion or it's a massive conspiracy.

Louloudia1 · 04/02/2020 07:22

I'm not a virologist but I don't think we need to be really worried about it here in the UK. I'm more concerned about how people will treat Chinese people though. My DH has had some crap directed at him already. Happy days!

anonacfr · 04/02/2020 07:23

I thought all viral infections were antibiotics- resistant?

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 04/02/2020 07:23

Aah, so I thought it came on similar to a cold and then attacked respiratory system.
So my DD had a cold the other day not bad at all. Fully recovered. Now I have a cold. Slightly worse than hers but far from the worse I have had.

It got me thinking, I wouldn't know whether this is the virus or just a cold. I don't have fever. I feel cold, but I always do when I am tired. I have a woken up with a dry throat (probably from snoring all night) no cough.

Clearly it is just a cold. Had my DD not had the cold beforehand I would have panicked. I am further south than the 2 positive cases. Do you need all the symptoms or do just a couple sometimes show?

Roselilly36 · 04/02/2020 07:25

No point in worrying, just follow the advice and hope for the best. I have a chronic illness and that worries me far more to be honest.

HRH2020 · 04/02/2020 07:27

I'm morbidly curious about it. Watching the videos from Chinese hospitals and hearing that people have been repatriated who are ill with it is slightly concerning. I think we are not being told the whole story in the uk either.

The main worry is the people who left Wuhan before the lock down I guess.

Sucksfake1 · 04/02/2020 07:29

I'm worried, not for myself but my toddler has an underlining respiratory condition he's ended up hospitalised (struggling/stopping breathing not much i can do at home calpol and fluids wouldn't quite cut it) with croup, hand foot and mouth and other normal childhood illnesses.

Realistically if he catches it he will probably die. I'm close too Newcastle which isn't helping the matter.

IvyBush123 · 04/02/2020 07:30

@HRH2020 I watched that twitter videos too but I do hope most of them are fakes. I think there are just a lot of people out there who enjoy scaring other people.

I've got a newborn so I'm worried about him getting it as hes not got much of an immune system yet.

MyNewBearTotoro · 04/02/2020 07:35

I’m not worried for myself or my family, at this stage I think the coronavirus is unlikely to become widespread in the UK.

I am concerned about what will happen if it reaches any countries who don’t have the resources to quarantine it and don’t have well developed healthcare systems. It could be devastating if it hit some poorer Asian countries or got into Africa. Scientists are right to be worried because it could cause huge numbers of deaths across many countries in the world, but the UK has one of the worlds best health systems and the resources to test and quarantine victims so I don’t think it will become a problem over here. The greater risk is to poorer nations and nations with overcrowded areas such as slums.

Greysparkles · 04/02/2020 07:36

What are the symptoms?? I haven't actually heard anyone report the symptoms

ravensoaponarope · 04/02/2020 07:36

I'm not currently worried about it in the UK, though I have asthma.
I'm very worried and sad for the people in Wuhan province and other areas of China. And for Chinese people everywhere who are experiencing an increase in racial abuse.

ClientQueen · 04/02/2020 07:37

A little cautious, I'm immunocompromised (neutropenic) but then I'm the same if a colleague has tonsillitis etc, and I sit in a different room at work alone so I'm away from them

Nigglesmiggle · 04/02/2020 07:42

I don’t really get why we are supposed to be worried?
Do we worry about flu? Or bad colds?
I know there is a vaccine for flu but there isn’t for colds and I reckon a lot of people with existing health conditions must die from complications of common colds?

So yes it is sad for those people and their families and bad for the economy but if someone could explain the panic I’d be grateful.

EnidBlyton · 04/02/2020 07:45

I wasnt but dd is at university and the other dd is in london, so I am a little bit concerned.

EnidBlyton · 04/02/2020 07:46

agree, bit worried about racism towards Chinese people

Notstrongandstable · 04/02/2020 07:49

The infection rate is high, the numbers are doubling about every 5 days. The mortality rate is also much higher than normal flu. That's why experts are concerned. People saying it's only as bad as normal flu obviously haven't been paying attention
Having said all that I'm not particularly worried but v concerned for people in Asia

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 04/02/2020 07:50

I have just been told by somebody I commute with that a case was confirmed in Birmingham! I have searched everywhere and cannot find it.

He said he heard it last night.

Notstrongandstable · 04/02/2020 07:52

Also, China have locked down an area of 50 million people, taken a massive hit to their economy and built two new hospitals in 10 days...people think that's nothing?

Sooverthemill · 04/02/2020 07:52

Not in the slightest worried about it for myself family or friends. Concerned for people who contract a new virus who don't know if they will get better. Flu kills a lot of people, in the UK and world wide. Obviously we need to be vigilant with new viruses but I am sure that WHO etc are over reacting in order to be cautious. My DD had swine flu and was incredibly unwell but the NHS provided free and fast treatment ( she has asthma). Nobody else in the family did because we followed sensible hygiene rules. I do t think we need to be worried for ourselves . If you have health anxiety it might be an issue

Tunnocks34 · 04/02/2020 07:52

Not bothered. It’s essentially the flu but with more scare mongering. I hope that the hysteria around it dies off soon because the xenophobia that is causing concerns me more.

NaturalBornWoman · 04/02/2020 07:53

I know there is a vaccine for flu but there isn’t for colds and I reckon a lot of people with existing health conditions must die from complications of common colds?

Do you know anyone who has died from complications of a common cold? Do 3 out of every 100 people who catch a cold die?

I agree that worrying doesn't help but a certain amount of caution is appropriate at this point as we need to be listening and acting on advice. People who aren't alert to the fact that we are on the verge of a pandemic cause me some concern.

Sooverthemill · 04/02/2020 07:53

I thunk China is responding sensibly to confine the virus.

AnnaMariaDreams · 04/02/2020 07:54

Yes I’m a bit worried because DS has asthma. I think I worry more as I get older, I didn’t worry about swine flu.

WellHolyGodMiley · 04/02/2020 07:54

YANBU
It is a bit cavalier of people to insist they are not worried. If it hits Ireland where I am, I will stay inside for 3 weeks. I warned my boss of this yesterday.
