I am waiting with interest to find out what happens next, following on from this afternoon's talks at Sandringham.

Poor old Queen. She can't have finished the leftover turkey yet and here she is, embroiled in another crisis.

Don't be disingenuous, Lizzie.

That is certainly not what MM and PH want from this. If it were, nobody would object.

And vitriolic abuse of people, when reported, is definitely and rightly deleted by MNHQ.

Over 13 million in the uk watched the wedding of Harry and MM.
Even large screens were erected to watch in pubs across the uk. A bit like when England plays in the World Cup but with less chanting and beer throwing.
Hardly the act of a nation of racists as they would now like to label us.
I don’t even watch tv but the last program I did watch was the wedding and I wasn’t wearing a white bedsheet over my head and burning a cross on my lawn at the same time.

I won’t deny that there are racists in this country. I could even point a finger at a family member of my own but to label the country as racists is wrong and just more of the whole woe is me act.

I think the overwhelming feeling of all this is if they want to go then Go but as a non working/ cherry picking royal you pay for yourself without hawking your royal status to feather your new nest.

IrmaFayLear · 13/01/2020 14:45

Their aim is to raise millions for good causes and again I wish them all the luck in the world.

Just choked reading that. They are not a couple of Miss World contestants from the 1970s, "I'd like to travel the world and meet people and I'd like world peace." They have given the impression of being petulant and downright greedy.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/01/2020 14:45

I think that Meghan believed that she understood the 'celebrity' status of the RF because she is/was a 'celebrity'. But she didn't understand that the pressure to 'keep up appearances' came equally from inside as well as public pressure. Hollywood celebrities still have 'down time' in the midst of their families and quite a bit of license to do as they please when in the public eye. MM was faced with (to her) ridiculous rules about image, precedence, traditions, and hierarchy. Harry (and others) may have tried to explain this to her, but until one is actually in the midst of it, one doesn't get the 'depth' of it. I think most of us, at one time or another, have looked at our iLs 'way of doing' things' and thought "What the hell?". She underestimated the power of public opinion and centuries of royal tradition and she overestimated her own ability/power to make changes.

Harry has always been one to 'kick up the traces' and I think he's been wanting to be 'free' for a long time. You can see it in some of the past (bad) choices he's made. I think he saw in MM a partner in trying to make force changes to his role within the RF. I think she made him feel that he was entitled to live his own life without regards to his role in the RF and that when the time came the RF would 'see sense' and let them go their own way, on their own terms. I didn't work that way (no surprise) and now here we are.

Personally, I feel if PH and MM want to 'go their own way' more power to them. But as with any 'senior' executive in a business, when you leave you don't get to take your salary, the office furniture, and the client list with you. And there are often clauses in your 'contract' that keep you from capitalizing on role with your former employer. This is what PH and MM badly misunderstood.

queenofarles · 13/01/2020 14:45

MrsBrentford not racist at all I agree,

But then I read some of MM friends saying she is being bullied and is a victim of racist abuse , and I can’t think of a thing being printed as being racist!
Or are they labeling the Articles on Frogmore , clothes , NY baby shower as racist?
People really have selective memory loss or just forget, Cambridges we’re hounded with the exact articles too .

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 14:46

@brassbrass.

I think it is as does my son but I have friends (white) who disagree.

BlackCatSleeping · 13/01/2020 14:47

I think William only became a senior Royal when he turned 35.

I may be wrong, but I guess George doesn't receive the sovereign grant and isn't considered a working Royal. At some point, when he's an adult and ready to start working for the firm, he will have to give up whatever job he has and become a senior Royal.

DeRigueurMortis · 13/01/2020 14:47

I think they will actually get a lot of what they want.

Not because the RF are caving to their demands, but rather because they are going to play a long game.

Stripping H in particular of his HRH status is a big step and has some serious ramifications not just for H (especially if his marriage doesn't last) but also for Charlotte and Louis in the future.

Equally I think PC and PW are genuinely concerned about H's well being and not effecting some kind of compromise is likely to alienate him still further.

Better to give them some of what they want and retain a degree of control/influence/goodwill. It also takes the sting out of any allegations that H&M might make about the RF not being supportive.

I think we will see them move to Canada, keep their titles (Canada has already agreed to pick up the security tab there) but in turn they will have to pay commercial rent on Frogmore (that PC might pick up the tab for) and some type of governance from the Palace on what private work they can undertake to make money (so as not to tarnish the royal brand by selling themselves to the highest bidder), maybe even a role for H in Canada as part of the Commonwealth.

fallen121 · 13/01/2020 14:48

The Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge have denied "false" claims in the Times that their relationship was damaged by bullying.

Two things. They denied it that quick it leads me to believe that there's some truth in it. And I might have expected some tacky tabloid to have thought up lies like this but the good old London Times is a quality paper and usually check their facts and have reliable sources.

I think the RF is falling apart. After Queenie pops her clogs I expect it to be slimmed down rather a lot more. Just sayin'

Iamdobby63 · 13/01/2020 14:49

@brassbrass What gives you the impression they were stone walled? If that were the case then surely the RF wouldn’t be so shocked now? I doubt if they were determined enough that the palace could have ‘shafted’ them.

PlacidPenelope · 13/01/2020 14:49

fallen121 Prince William was still serving in the RAF as a helicopter pilot when they lived in Anglesey. When he came out of the RAF he took a job with the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service and donated the salary he received directly to charity.

The EAAAS flies out of Norwich and Cambridge Airports and he was living (some of the time) at Amner Hall in Norfolk when he was employed.

Rinoachicken · 13/01/2020 14:51

@fallen121 probably more to do with the fact Harry would be face time face with his brother in a few hours and have to look him in the eye and answer for it

scaryteacher · 13/01/2020 14:53

Fallen121 In Anglesey William was doing Search and Rescue with the RAF as a serving officer. The Air Ambulance stuff came after he resigned from the Forces to take on more royal duties. He donated his salary from the latter to charity, and arguably raised the profile of Norfolk Air Ambulance as a charity by working for them.

PaprikaPringle · 13/01/2020 14:53

@MNHQ are you going to move this thread to the Royal Family board like you moved mine?

astralweaks · 13/01/2020 14:54

Priti Patel is a woman...

Good grief. Imagine someone correcting someone who knew that. Time to bow out.

PlacidPenelope · 13/01/2020 14:57

Mike Tindall has been done twice for drink driving but he doesn’t get half the shit MM does.

He got a whole heap of shit over the shenanigans on the Rugby Tour.

Iamdobby63 · 13/01/2020 14:59

I also agree that H and M will get what they want, I think today will be about laying down rules and restrictions on what they can do to earn their own money, I guess also to learn from Harry how they plan to manage all this and to find out and work out what their roles within the RF will be. If the papers are to be believed then also making sure it’s clear of what the cost of living in two countries will be.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/01/2020 15:01

The Canadian comments about them paying for security are interesting; it won't happen of course, just the Queen won't pay all their expenses no matter what she claims, and any commitment to H&M "only taking on suitable initiatives" will be a lie. For now, though, the RF will no doubt go for a soothing vanilla statement, only to see the wheels fall off yet again when H&M go off piste

Surprised to see the reports that Meghan will "phone in", given the obvious security risks around who else could be listening ... though even if she does, the advisers are doubtless on notice to cut her off at a prearranged signal from HM

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 13/01/2020 15:01

I’ve read things that have been classified as raciest towards Meghan like saying she uses hair treatment, not mentioning that so many white people use hair treatments too, or when people describe her hairstyles messy , well sienna Miller , Alexa Chung and Kate Moss are always described as having messy hair, 🤷🏼‍♀️
Yeah, I just don't get it. How are comments that she uses hair treatment, that many white people use, being racist?

How is a comment about her hair being messy being racist if other celebrities' hair has been described as messy too?

It just doesn't make sense. Some people will always read things that aren't there.

astralweaks · 13/01/2020 15:03

@BlackCatSleeping

Vitriol?? confused

😂

New definition of vitriol, I suppose. Ridiculous.

fallen121 · 13/01/2020 15:03

Thank you for all the replies. As I am not an ardent Royalist and I tend to read mostly foreign news media which doesn't always include details about the RF. Some countries are more interested in carrying news about what is happening in for example the Middle East rather than what Kate or Meghan wore to Church that day. So I appreciate very much where people reply to my queries.

So today I started to read more BBC News so I can keep up better with the discussion here. And my impression is that much of the UK news media were very much against Harry & Meghan up until a few days ago. But now we're seeing many more articles coming out in support of them. I attribute this to one of two things:

  1. They realise that inflammatory articles have tipped the pendulum too far as regards popularity of H&M, i.e. that many people have turned against them

  2. That those at the top are reigning in the "anti Harry & Meghan" articles because they fear that if too many UK citizens turn against them it may overspill into general antipathy against the RF in general

This doesn't strike me as impartial reporting on the part of the BBC.

GlitchStitch · 13/01/2020 15:05

Mike Tindall also isn't a working royal and I doubt he posted on Instagram reminding others to watch their alcohol intake directly before going out and getting pissed. (Obviously drink driving is appalling but he is never going to attract the same scrutiny as senior royals). When Philip had his crash it was front page news, loads of mocking, memes, calls for him to stop driving etc.

Alsohuman · 13/01/2020 15:05

Two things. They denied it that quick it leads me to believe that there's some truth in it. And I might have expected some tacky tabloid to have thought up lies like this but the good old London Times is a quality paper and usually check their facts and have reliable sources

So if you deny something quickly it must be true? Rum logic, I’ve not come across that before. It was Tom Bradby who wrote that in The Times, he’s coming across as a grade A shit stirrer.

brassbrass · 13/01/2020 15:06

Because instead of the talk they are having today they were told by PC to provide costings. Why not have a family meeting immediately?! When he then approached the queen as he obviously felt he wasn't getting anywhere with PC and Wills he was told to go back to PC.

This is all stonewalling!! They should have had a meeting straight away and the public and media would have been none the wiser. H&M weren't getting any traction hence I think they did this to force engagement from the firm which now appears to be happening.

TheMustressMhor · 13/01/2020 15:07

No. But the BBC is never impartial, IMO.
