I am waiting with interest to find out what happens next, following on from this afternoon's talks at Sandringham.

Poor old Queen. She can't have finished the leftover turkey yet and here she is, embroiled in another crisis.

The IRS requires that you file taxes in the US, no matter where you live in the world. I do this as a dual citizen and it’s an absolute pain in the bottom. However I have never been required to pay additional taxes in the US at least so far.

Then again I’m not a very high-profile millionaire who has recently married into the Royal Family.

Moomin8 · 13/01/2020 23:10

Before they even got married I said they wouldn't last 5 years and that any children would be in America with Meghan.

I read that the Queen’s reference to “Harry and Meghan” in her statement could suggest that they’re set to lose their titles... or she could have just been trying to convey a more intimate tone. Time will tell...

SecretGuiltyPleasureLoveIsland · 13/01/2020 23:13

Prince Harry needs to do the Freedom programme.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 13/01/2020 23:14

I've been googling and can't find anything either - will someone please pm me?

Jillyhilly · 13/01/2020 23:14

I am enjoying this clash between woke narcissism on the one side and tradition and duty on the other. It is turning me into a huge fan of the latter.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 13/01/2020 23:15

Certainly her dad had a drug problem. I didn’t know about the hookers though. Even more curious that her mother left her in his care. She idolises her mother yet some may say she wasn’t a model parent.

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 23:16

I think she was possibly indisposed.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 13/01/2020 23:17

Please pm me @MrsBrentford

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 23:18

SunsetBoulevard3 · 13/01/2020 23:18

I'm come very much to the same conclusion Jilly Grin

@SeperatedSwans

I don't know when Meghan's stint on Suits ended or when she stopped working (presumably when she took up with Harry) but I am presuming that she hasn't actually EARNED any money since coming to the UK for her to pay tax on, so don't think she is paying double tax already. Don't think she is paying ANY tax actually as even the IRS can't tax you on savings you've already paid tax on. Most of what they are living on now must be Sovereign grant and/or Duchy of Cornwall (from their website) and most of that will be going to Harry anyhow.

So I'm maybe thinking that she is more of a non earning SAHM right now but may potentially be liable for double tax in the future a la Boris Johnson on all these deals she is apparently cooking up.

Remember Al Capone? He was a nasty piece of work. The Federal authorities were desperate to prosecute him but couldn't get him for murder or extortion due to lack of evidence. Then some woman in the US Government came up with the brilliant idea of doing him for Tax Evasion in 1931.

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 23:24

Suits was absolutely shit after series 4/5.

The fact that she didn’t move on to a better show and stayed with it speaks volumes.

Afrigginggoat · 13/01/2020 23:24

I can't find anything either. Clearly rubbish at googling. Please pm me!

Andylion · 13/01/2020 23:25

I would like a pm too, please.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/01/2020 23:25

I'd like a PM too.

eternalopt · 13/01/2020 23:27

Another one failing on google! Pm please

SeperatedSwans · 13/01/2020 23:27

@fallen ah I see, so spousal.oncome.doesmt count, just her sole income as a independent. Makes sense.

Kind of makes me a little angry she's basically free loaded and then thrown a tantrum. She's been a kept woman by the crown and her FIL and then spouts sorry....then a "leak" says she hasn't been welcomed and the family are racist. It's not like she's been in Kate's hand me downs and digging around in the costume jewelry box is it!! Whilst Phil shouts "what's the help doing at the dinner table" 🤦🏻‍♀️

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 23:29

I have PM’d everyone.

Someone else needs to take the mantle now Grin

SunsetBoulevard3 · 13/01/2020 23:30

@Jillyhilly
Yes I agree too.

fallen121 · 13/01/2020 23:32

@Jillyhilly

Boris Johnson was born in New York when his parents worked there and as far as I know hasn't ever lived there and has always paid UK taxes on his income earned as a UK politician.

However....whilst UK tax laws don't require you to pay tax on sale of property if it is your main residence, they do if it's a second or subsequent home and there's a capital gain. I think he sold a property in Islington in 2014. Not sure if it WAS a second home and if he paid UK tax on the capital gain or even if there was a capital gain (in London it would be surprising if there wasn't) but it was counted as "income" by the IRS and although he disputed it, I think ultimately that he had to pay the bill and that drove him to renounce his citizenship two years later.

Either way, Meghan's finances are going to come under intense scrutiny by the IRS in much the same way. So she can either avoid it by renouncing her US citizenship and become Canadian (if they will have her), or become a UK citizen (although I think she might actually have to LIVE here to do that).

kinsss · 13/01/2020 23:32

Why PM? If it is not something for everyone it sounds like, well I don't really know, nor do I care.

Honestly.
