I am waiting with interest to find out what happens next, following on from this afternoon's talks at Sandringham.

Poor old Queen. She can't have finished the leftover turkey yet and here she is, embroiled in another crisis.

starbucks you are leaving out the bit about MM possibly not wanting to see her FIL? or being difficult about access? or basically just being a prima donna?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 13/01/2020 21:48

I think only Oprah will be interest so that she can interview them.

I think they'll desperately need Oprah to put a positive spin on their actions, recreate some stardust and build a sympathetic narrative. She interviewed the DOY and will doubtless reference her struggles in the RF to set the tone, then paint M&H as victims who have done the scary thing by stepping away from a 'place of safety' (the RF) and 'bravely' stood out on their own facing down the toxic media together!

Soon followed by references to mental health and loss....pics with Harry and his mum...M and her estranged father....poor them!

But now finally they're leaving their broken selves behind, have 'found their voices' (it is to be noted M has been finding her voice for a long time, she won rights for women by complaining about a washing up liquid ad) are "speaking their truth" and now focusing on their charitable endeavours.

All hail!

Snugglepiggy · 13/01/2020 21:49

Why shouldn't the D of E remove himself?.He wasn't going to be part of the main meeting. And perhaps he felt it was better not to see Harry today .I can imagine he's furious and hurt and maybe knows he has less chance of remaining calm and holding back.Maybe the Queen wanted him to stay out of the way.And we don't even know he and Harry haven't spoken by phone.
Plus he's a very old,frail man now.

kinsss · 13/01/2020 21:52

Give it a couple of weeks, or less.... and we will all will move on to something else.

My view is that apart from some sycophantic Royalists, this episode is just that, and episode where ranting and raving (with some notable exceptions) is just people letting off steam. OK that's fine, H and M were not the sharpest tools in the PR box there for sure. But really, who will care in a year or so?

I wish them well, hope the marriage survives and that they will be happy together away from the UK gutter press. Who could blame them?

As others have said, there is nothing stop the UK family from visiting them in their new home abroad is there? No there is nothing to stop it.

So we shall see who is prepared to keep the ties that bind. Hmmm.

Haggisfish · 13/01/2020 21:54

Yes d of e is hardly known for his tact! Poor old hmq.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/01/2020 21:54

Yolofish I don't know her so can't make any guess about what she thinks of her FIL it's pure speculation on your part. Of course 90% of the thread is based on speculation and personal prejudices (not necessarily regarding race) of the posters.

If relationships are average or better, there's no reason why he can't see them.

Mumblecrumbs · 13/01/2020 21:54

Imagine the fallout if either (heaven forbid) the Queen or Phillip pass away in the next few months. The press would blame the Sussexes and the media hate frenzy would be explosive.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 13/01/2020 21:56

The Sun published the story due to a leak. It's old news!

yolofish · 13/01/2020 21:57

I do feel for Phil, awful man that he is. Basically he's done his duty for HMQ for 70 odd years, and then this little whippersnapper (aged 35) and his flouncy wife (aged 38, for those who describe them as a young couple) come and upset the apple cart and HMQ and the rest are left to pick up the pieces. In his shoes, I'd say 'fuck this I'm off' rather than stand around and rant at my overly entitled grandson over who I had no real authority anyway.

Rinoachicken · 13/01/2020 22:00

Poor Bea, she’s probably dreading her wedding now, what with her dad and now this.

The whole build up, will be are they coming are they not? If not, why not? Were they invited? Did they get left out, decline? If they DO come, are they interacting with the rest of the family? Is there tension, are they happy together still? And all that in addition to all the stuff about her dad.

An elopement must be looking mighty attractive right now.

FiveTwoFaster · 13/01/2020 22:00

He's hardly on a state pension and too poor to visit. They are always travelling all over the world, no reason at all they won't see him. Plenty of people have children who move to other countries.

Prince Charles hopefully will see Archie but it will naturally be less. He is not a retired 70 year old with the time to kill. He’s busy covering for the Queen, doing international tours, visiting random rainy towns all across Great Britain to gladhand and ask questions about how they make cheese or whatever. Also, the security costs for him to go on a jolly little visit to Toronto are also high. There is no question he will see very little of his grandson if PH and MM don’t genuinely balance their time fairly evenly between the UK and Canada. And that is quite sad. He was very welcoming to MM - there has never been any suggestion he wasn’t. He walked her up the aisle, he was lovely to her mother, splashed the cash when Frogmore was asked for and he now has a 2000 mile round trip to get in the diary if he wants any bond with his DIL or Archie.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 13/01/2020 22:01

But who leaked it to The Sun? I thought the speculation was this may have been done by their camp on purpose as a cover to force the Queens hand?

Much like the details of certain letters to certain newspapers by 'friends' causing someone elses's hand to be forced.

kinsss · 13/01/2020 22:02

The only thing that matters is the detrimental PR for the RF. Yes you heard me there.

The RF are not without sin, (same as many of us mere mortals), but their status covers most indiscretions up in order to keep the RF as a Firm.

Let he who is without sin and all that cast the first fecking stone here!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/01/2020 22:02

Philip is 99 in a few months and he looks like death walking. If he dies soon it will hardly be a surprise (I'm surprised he's not gone already) although the Daily Mail will no doubt blame Harry and more likely Meghan.

Also let's not forget HMQ is almost 96. She appears to be in exceptional health for her age but she can't have that much longer left, although her death would be a much bigger surprise.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 13/01/2020 22:06

Editor of the Sun, Dan Woolton said he was briefed by someone in the Sussex camp.

HMQ is almost 94. It’s an incredible age.

Bluntness100 · 13/01/2020 22:08

Forgive me if i'm being thick but I thought spending time in both the Canada and the UK...

I think the plan is they move permanently to the states.

I don't think Meghan is coming back to the U.K. any time soon. Nor is Archie.

karencantobe · 13/01/2020 22:09

Feel sorry for Phillip??
The racist who has had a string of affairs?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/01/2020 22:10

But who leaked it to The Sun?

Who knows? I have heard (somewhere and it may not be true, like much of the speculation) that Harry was concerned about potential leaks from St James's or KP and originally hadn't wanted to put his ideas in writing.

Frankly I suspect respective "friends" of all parties and some courtiers are probably all leaking against the others.

SeperatedSwans · 13/01/2020 22:11

I don't think it's an over assumption to think Charles will see less of his grandson now that he lives in Canada.

He won't be flown over for every "family" event to the UK such as rememberence Sunday, Christmas at Sandringham, Trooping of the Colour, Weddings, Funerals of minor royals. All those opportunities to see his grandfather and his heritage will most likely be missed year on year. Because it's ridiculous to think that Harry, Meghan and Archie are going to take a return cross Atlantic flight every 3 months or so?

All those events above is where the family and cousins bond, Archie won't appear in many of them. He will be the left out cousin. George, Charlotte and Louis will know Beatrice and Eugenie's possible children, Zara and Mike's, Peter and Autumn's children more than their own first cousin.

I know for many extended family may not be important but as a mother, with nieces and nephews who are my son's first cousins o adore the relationship they have. Cousins are basically just friends for life. My first cousins are my family but to me they are more like good friends even best friends who I confide in.

yolofish · 13/01/2020 22:11

No, Archie will be in Canada/the US for the foreseeable future. He is her main weapon, why would she risk bringing him back to the UK and potentially not being allowed to leave with him?

(I think it's unlikely that the RF would actually do this, but in her position I'd be worried)

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/01/2020 22:11

She is 94, I was getting her confused with my own DM who would be 96!

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 13/01/2020 22:13

I do wonder if this is not the beginning of the end for the whole institution. Not sure it can sustain another crisis. It has literally been due to the Queen and Prince Phillips continuing duty through all weathers that's been kept going. I literally think it is that sense of duty that's helping them both resist death. The spirit is strong, even if the flesh isn't, but once they succumb, I doubt the RF would survive any mote turbulant scandals during Charles reign.

I sincerely hope the Rose H affair rumours are false because W&K need to be squeaky clean and make sure their children don't turn into entitled Royal brats like PA.

I echo that it's a shame that Anne isn't next in line....or Helen Mirren.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 13/01/2020 22:13

They seem to be under the impression that they can pop back at will for Wimbledon and Ascot and the adoring crowds will aplaud them. They are in for a big shock.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 13/01/2020 22:13

The racist who has had a string of affairs?

IKR?! He messed up and lived by a different code to our own so should be given no consideration, whatsoever, no matter how old, ill or frail he is. No matter how much he stood by his duty in other ways.

No kindness or mercy whatsofuckingever!

eaglejulesk · 13/01/2020 22:16

I think if William has had an affair, Kate is a wonderful actress.

Does piss me off that people keep repeating it as an accepted fact on here, when it is definitely not. Bit like those daft folk who think The Crown is a true reflection of the Royal Family.

This. The way some people are going on about it you would think they are personal friends and have been told everything!!!!
