I am waiting with interest to find out what happens next, following on from this afternoon's talks at Sandringham.

Poor old Queen. She can't have finished the leftover turkey yet and here she is, embroiled in another crisis.

Has it occurred to anyone that she may be/have been suffering from post-natal depression? Perhaps now that she has a baby the reality of her life has hit her, the extreme constraints she has to live under for the rest of her life, endless criticism of her every mov, racism against her and her son, moving far away from everything she knew, losing her independence over the direction of her life. . I could go on. She was clearly a driven and independent woman before, I can imagine the changes could gave brought on depression.

Packingsoapandwater · 13/01/2020 16:15

I'm actually starting to get rather cross about all this.

Britain has a new government that is less than a month old. We are attempting to negiotiate a withdrawal from the European Union. We've just had an election where a number of constituencies turned blue for the first time in their histories, and we need to monitor how the government will react to that fact in real time.

Yet we get this. A hissy fit from an over-privileged couple, creating a fiasco at the heart of the institution at the centre of our constitutional monarchy just months after scandal surrounding another member.

Apparently, the Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill has been drafted in to review plans, because that is, of course, so much more fucking important than anything else going on in the country.

And Priti Patel is reportedly been asked to attend Royal meetings over the issue due to its highly contentious political nature surrounding public finances because, you know, she doesn't have anything better to do with her time ... like, I dunno, sort out the epidemic of knife crime on the capital's streets.

You would think that a Senior Royal might have some understanding of the implications that such a drastic statement as Harry and Megan made kight have on the wider political sphere, but apparently not. Their feelings are far more important than absolutely anything else.

And once again, the little people don't matter.

I have a lot of respect for the Queen.

But fuck this. Just fuck it.

PlacidPenelope · 13/01/2020 16:15

brassbrass not a great result for any of them and particularly Harry and Meghan whose petulance, impatience and arrogance are unedifying.

brassbrass · 13/01/2020 16:15

puzzled yes quite

I don't think this has anything to do with money or even Harry living abroad and everything to do with the monarchy feeling threatened about its position and the pecking order within it.

Harry has just lobbed a grenade at the pecking order.

brassbrass · 13/01/2020 16:18

Penelope they are all equally unpleasant. It's good this is happening. The more it happens the quicker we can get rid.

Iamdobby63 · 13/01/2020 16:19

brassbrass it’s not just about the money though, equally it’s about what sort of work they plan on undertaking etc.... surely they could have provided some sort of indication. They must have some plan.

GoodbyeRosie · 13/01/2020 16:19

So, how do I book onto one of the Mumsnet coaches that are travelling down to The Sussex's , and are pitchforks provided or do I need to bring my own?

I hope someone has got the Health and Safety certificate for the flaming torches as well.

Wheresthebeach · 13/01/2020 16:20

You have a very good point packingsoapandwater.

I normally ignore all things royal as it's really not relevant to my day to day life. This has grabbed everyone's attention because it's so unreasonable and entitled. I think has really hit a nerve over us paying our taxes to support them when so many are suffering from cut backs.

But yes...it would be good if it, at least, calmed down after today.

Jillyhilly · 13/01/2020 16:21

In my experience PND sufferers don’t usually put together extensive branded websites including flowcharts about their revenue streams.

TheMustressMhor · 13/01/2020 16:22

It's "bring your own Dragon" I think.

OP posts:
MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 16:22

For the amount of privilege they have you think the brothers would have been able to put on a show of unity for the sake of public appearances.

crispysausagerolls · 13/01/2020 16:22

@Packingsoapandwater

Very interesting way of looking at it - you are not wrong!

PlacidPenelope · 13/01/2020 16:23

I agree Packingsoapandwater, there was no need to do this now or in this manner. If Harry and Meghan were half the people they make themselves out to be they would have done this quietly, carefully and taken the time required to do so, lobbing a grenade as they have done shows just how selfish and self centred they are despite all their protestations to the contrary and the 'caring' image of themselves they parrot and promote.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 13/01/2020 16:25

@brassbrass

Why not have a family meeting immediately?! When he then approached the queen as he obviously felt he wasn't getting anywhere with PC and Wills he was told to go back to PC.
His approach to PC in December resulted in a realistic response to put together a detailed plan.
It is my understanding that PH didn't contact PC on Monday when he returned from Canada. He contacted the Queen who refused the meeting and suggested he talk more with his father.
He wanted to talk about business - his job and future role within 'the firm' - but he needs to realise there is a chain of command in any business. You don't try and bypass it.

H&M weren't getting any traction hence I think they did this to force engagement from the firm which now appears to be happening.
It sounds to me as if H&M were ignorant of all the factors that are involved and PC and the Queen realise there are more detailed issues involved. It sounds as if they wanted the details to be worked out privately and then the situation could be presented to the public in a dignified manner.

H&M have turned this into the ridiculous scenario we have today through their naivety, lack of knowledge and selfishness.

God help the RF and Harry when if Meghan decides she wants a divorce. Nothing would be sacred. It is obvious, just by the fact that they confide in a journalist, Tom Bradby, that they will be shooting their mouths off all over the place.

derxa · 13/01/2020 16:27

Packing You're so right. It's another sign of H&M' and royal family's complete isolation from real life and the people of this country.

The80sweregreat · 13/01/2020 16:27

Packing, put like that I'm inclined to agree with you. No self awareness from Harry that maybe they could have waited. Made up some statement about Meghan deciding to stay on in Canada ( extended holiday or residency issues or whatever) and then spoken to his family quietly without websites or statements or anything really until the finer details were sorted out calmly without the press getting involved.
It goes to show how self absorbed they both are , not that it surprises me really.
The other royals are probably concerned their own jobs may be under threat over all this or what else might slip out..
how long will the British people put up with all this for? It makes me wonder.

OVienna · 13/01/2020 16:29

@Packingsoapandwater

This - I actually passed time penning a letter to the editor of one of the broadsheets this w/e saying much the same regarding the timing of this stunt.

What I added to that missive is 1) After all the discord and disarray we've had over the past nearly 4 years, did they stop to think AT ALL how hurtful it is to have a vote of no confidence in the country from a well-regarded member of the Royal Family ??? He doesn't think this is the right environment to raise his family in, does he, and she goes as far as to suggest it's rather shit. 2) In two weeks' time the British people are going to lose their right of freedom of movement in the EU. This is not to rehash Brexit - really - but 48% of the public would have liked to have enjoyed that benefit for themselves and their families. The ability to chose where THEY may be happiest, where THEY might like to explore opportunities. Many people have EU spouses and currently in the process of applying for settlement, a process that will likely cause some anxiety. Did M&H stop to think for a teensy, weensy minute that the sight of them falling apart and demanding that at least two governments come together and provide a solution for them to follow their dreams might be seeing as a bit GALLING in this context? Do they actually care what is going on in Britain now, what challenges they are and think to themselves - you know what? This is not a good look. And it is certainly not progressive.

This is what I find truly obscene and what I cannot understand H&M's defenders don't see.

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 16:31

@OVienna

Totally 👍🏻

The80sweregreat · 13/01/2020 16:32

I doubt that either of them have even thought about Brexit at all ! I bet it hasn't even come up for them. Too busy sorting themselves out and looking for a new start.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 13/01/2020 16:35

@brassbrass

Costings could never be done by Harry without input from the wider machine. It's a tactic, stonewalling.
It"s perfectly realistic to expect him to put a detailed plan together with regard to other considerations. It would show that he understands the areas his decision impacts.
Who has said he was asked to put together costings rather than a detailed plan?

Wherearemyminions · 13/01/2020 16:35

@OVienna Excellent points well made

MorningCalm · 13/01/2020 16:36

The couple has consultants. I presume the announcement on the Instagram was not made spontaneously.

Why do you think it has to have been made around that time?

brassbrass · 13/01/2020 16:39

There's no innocent party. It's been going on for some time behind the scenes and it's now spilled over because they haven't been able to contain it with the usual mechanisms at their disposal. All selfishly motivated.

colouringinpro · 13/01/2020 16:40

crazy.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 13/01/2020 16:42

It will be interesting to see what reception the two of them will get the next time they're together in public. I think Meghan has truly burnt her boats for a lot of people especially with threatening a 'No holds barred' television appearance.
I bet she's rubbing her hands with glee at the thought of all the $$$$ she's going to get.
I think she saw herself as the People's Princess Mk11, saviour of the masses instead she's looking like a grubby money-grabbing social climber.
