...Scene One?

I think we probably do need a third thread.

But the majority of people with half a brain in the UK KNOW the tabloid press is ridiculous and makes up half the stuff it prints.

That doesn’t seem to compute when they want to believe it.

The comments section on the DM is absolutely foul about them. The likes of the Telegraph not much better. I’ve seen many lies about them repeated as fact on here.

So no. I totally disagree.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/01/2020 16:29

I would absolutely love to know what Princess Anne thinks of the whole debacle

You and me both, Titchy Wink

To say nothing of Philip, who's probably had quite a lot to say on the subject (most of it no doubt obscenities)

halcyondays · 12/01/2020 16:30

The comments section on the DM is foul about everyone, even children.

astralweaks · 12/01/2020 16:30

Alsohuman

I don’t think anyone should have to put up with the press making up lies to make them look bad

It kind of goes with the territory if you’re Royal. The rules the rest of them follow are there for a reason - because they work. There’s a tried and tested way of dealing with the media, they all follow it and it serves them well. Whether the stories about the Sussexes are true or not, they pale into insignificance compared with the rough ride Camilla got, she didn’t react publicly and they gave up. Harry just pours petrol on the flames.

Totally agree. Of course it goes with the territory - and others like Camilla have handled it all with dignity, to the extent that many people cannot believe there was ever a time she was truly vilified.

The thing with Camilla, though, is she comes across as genuine.

AutumnRose1 · 12/01/2020 16:32

TitchyP I think the average mental age of a tabloid reader is 9 or 12 or some such? I cba looking for it, it came up during Leveson.

So there’s a very good chance the majority do believe what they read isn’t there? And even if not, why should papers be allowed to print damaging lies about anyone? Or - not to derail - personal truths?

JulietJanuary · 12/01/2020 16:32

You tube comments, newspaper comments, twitter propagandists are all never to be taken as a cross section views or a vox pop.

TheMustressMhor · 12/01/2020 16:32

So back to the line of succession - if Edward VIII had remained King, our Queen would have ascended the throne in 1972, when he died.

Forget what I said about the Duke of Gloucester.

One word. Andrew.

LaurieMarlow · 12/01/2020 16:34

Some of the comments directed towards MM have absolutely been racist...the majority have not.

One of the things that’s been very common has been criticising MM for things that are standard behaviour for the rest of the royals.

So spending money on Frogmore (when the Cambridge’s spent far more on the KP apartments), private jet usage, hanging with celebs, etc.

So if people are going to criticise MM for those things, having never passed comment on them before, you have to wonder about what’s behind that.

JulietJanuary · 12/01/2020 16:34

Is it not the language structure and vocabulary usage is pitched at that level?

ElspethFlashman · 12/01/2020 16:36

Laurie you have a very short memory if you don't think the Cambridges were absolutely slaughtered for doing up Apt 1A.

Ooh...
Ageist and sexist.🤣

Yet no contribution from the revered poster?

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 12/01/2020 16:37

I personally have known men who throw themselves into relationships and move heaven and earth to keep their new DW/DP happy. I have also seen the scorched earth approach to that same woman they take when they finally wake up. I remember reading an article about Paul McCartney and Heather Mills where the writer described the sociopathic coldness of men towards the women they once loved. Heather Mills got so much bad press but he allegedly made life so uncomfortable for her in so many ways he just didn't need to after the split, just because he could.

PH has a huge support network, even if he dips out of it for a bit it will still be waiting when he returns. M might be in charge now but I think it's unlikely to last and I don't think he's as much a lovelorn sap as others seem to. I think it will end suddenly and sharply and I think it will be him that does it because as others have said, he had something huge to go back to,

halcyondays · 12/01/2020 16:37

Didn’t Camilla get photographed going to the supermarket with the headline “is this the most hated women in Britain?” Lots of stuff criticising her appearance, just as Fergie did.

Kate got stupid comments on the DM when she was in hospital with HG, saying was milking it and nobody else would be in hospital with it, which was crap.

Getitwright · 12/01/2020 16:40

I think the abdication in 1936 had a profound influence on the Queen and her parents, and why this situation, whilst never going to be as life changing, given how far removed H is from throne, isn’t very nice for the Queen or others with a similar sense of duty such as PC and PW.

Very difficult to do in this age of intense media scrutiny, and the need to announce every detail of your life via social media, but surely, trying to discuss things with your family, such a far removed from normal family, rather than announcing things to the whole world might have been better than this drip feeding approach? He’s doing all the things his mother did and paid so dearly in the end.

@BonnesVacances, two options for you

  1. Join in and rationally debate British history intelligently
  2. F*ck off and glean your thrills from gutter rags and online trash sites.

I keep focusing on the grammatical error in the court papers. Says ‘effected’ when surely it should ‘affected’

DeeZastris · 12/01/2020 16:42

I think Sarah Ferguson got far worse press when she was newly married than Meghan Markle did. It was relentlessly vicious.

TheMustressMhor · 12/01/2020 16:43

@Nishky

Can you post a link?

I love discovering grammatical errors.

astralweaks · 12/01/2020 16:44

Haven’t read them but I think effected might be right if the meaning is “ to have brought about”. It depends on the context.

astralweaks · 12/01/2020 16:45

A link would help. Wouldn’t it be fun if they were wrong!?

Nishky · 12/01/2020 16:46

I will try and find it

TheMustressMhor · 12/01/2020 16:47

Finding a grammatical error is always a good thing to do on a Sunday afternoon.

Thing is, while most of us all suspect that the press print a load of poppycock, we can't actually know they've lied unless someone brings a proper challenge as Meghan has done (if it ever goes ahead)

In other words it cuts both ways, as we saw with much about Charles and Diana which was deemed nonsense at the time and later proved to be only too true

Best, perhaps, to keep a reasonably open mind and focus where possible on what the subjects themselves have said ... which in H&M's case is plenty

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 12/01/2020 16:50

If PH and MM had continued and followed the 'never complain, never explain' rule I think they'd have been accepted

Hate this attitude. Just shut up and take whatever names you're called lies that are told about you etc....
it's like being back at school with bullies saying "it's all just bantz, innit"
Don't blame them to be honest if they do feel it's getting a bit much, some people in the media are verging on out and out harassment and totally obsessed.
