...Scene One?

I think we probably do need a third thread.

I vividly remember The Duchess of Pork.

And then she published kids books, which was shock! horror! a commercial venture

And then she got her toe sucked by a Texan in front of her kids. Whilst topless. Won't somebody think of the children!!!

She was absolutely loathed.

I think the RF have to be very careful how they deal this and what the public will accept.

The public are rightly furious about Prince Andrew and his shenanigans, his arrogance and disdain for the public whilst pursuing his life at taxpayers expense already rankled. I actually think that Harry and Meghan made a grave error with the timing of this because the public mood is not terribly forgiving at the moment, had they waited a couple of years and built up public sympathy/understanding then they would probably have been given the kind of leeway they want.

I think at the moment the public would not wear the idea that Harry and Meghan can just swan off with all their royal titles and the status that affords them, hawking themselves to the highest bidder in pursuit of enormous wealth, wining and dining with mega rich celebrities, promoting various 'friends' businesses and charities, accepting holidays and other freebies from various possible dubious sources all whilst expecting those tiresome oiks in the UK to pay taxes to cover their accommodation, security, etc., contribute to the charities and buy from the businesses they promote. They will deign to appear in the UK occasionally and expect those same oiks to give them the deference and adulation they feel they deserve. It reeks of contempt for the British public and will go down like a cup of cold sick. The mood at the moment seems to be to let them go and pursue their life the way they want but they leave their titles and royal status and any expectation of taxpayer funding at the door on the way out, if the RF cave to H&M's demands I fear there will be a nasty backlash.

The irony is that those tiresome oiks who wait in the cold and rain for hours to catch a glimpse and exchange a few words with Harry and Meghan are the very people who would have asked the how are you question that Meghan seems to feel is so important, they are also the very people who would have supported and sympathised with Harry and Meghan had they shown them some respect and a bit more give.

One of the things that’s been very common has been criticising MM for things that are standard behaviour for the rest of the royals.

Who were likewise criticised at the time. Also, the others havn't been jumping on the SM virtue signalling bandwagon like MM has. They're rightly criticised for flying so much after they've campaigned against everyone else doing it.

mummyrocks1 · 12/01/2020 16:53

Laurie- yes it does, and it goes with the territory of you are a celebrity and choose to step into the limelight. Many celebrities have absolute lies written about them everyday. Death threats, press releases saying they have died. What did she expect? That is what the press do. But I do think they are much more ruthless than the US press. She was warned about it by a friend- "they will ruin your life" if you want to be in the limelight that is one of the negatives, a long with the many positives you have to put up with. Not saying it's right.

They needed to put up and shut up for the time being, do the bare minimum to keep the press happy. Then when they were respected and liked they could begin to have an opinion on things, begin to complain and champion their charities. I just don't think they thought about the public perception of them when they began to feel they could start challenging things.

NaturalBornWoman · 12/01/2020 16:54

I vividly remember The Duchess of Pork.

And the DM saying she looked like a barmaid who'd won the pools.

ElspethFlashman · 12/01/2020 16:59

But if they went into it thinking of "challenging things" then surely it would have been better not to go into it at all?

There was lots of chat around the time of their marriage of their rumoured desire to "shake it up" which worried people.

Cos actually that sounded too disruptive. Far better than to just quietly do it from the inside.

Some would argue that Charles, with his slimming down of the monarchy, has "shaken things up" more than anyone.

Wingedharpy · 12/01/2020 17:02

Doria Ragland for next Queen I say.
She strikes me as a woman with great dignity.

NaturalBornWoman · 12/01/2020 17:02

And every time prince Charles had a new date they'd find some old boyfriend to dish the dirt on her, and most of the actual aristocratic young women of the time who actually knew what the life would be like turned him down. Hence Diana. Who they then papped at every opportunity, even using hidden cameras, and taped her phone calls.

derxa · 12/01/2020 17:05

.

TitchyP · 12/01/2020 17:06

Don't agree that it's the same as school bullying at all.

For a start if they didn't read the papers they wouldn't know the worst of it. I doubt anyone called Sarah F the Duchess of Pork to her face.
The RF live in a physical bubble, no-one is yelling at MM in the streets waiting outside the gates to duff her up.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/01/2020 17:07

I think the RF have to be very careful how they deal this and what the public will accept

Very true, but never forget that the RF - especially when under attack - will always prioritise the institution they gain so much from. They'll do what they can to protect the blood family (too bad, Meghan) but it's the overall institution which counts in the end

So what I'm expecting is for the Queen to announce that in future she'll meet every one of the Sussexes expenses from her own pocket ... and then for her accountants to get on with some clever bookkeeping to ensure it doesn't happen

Planeplane

You really do not not have to explain the definition of racism to me and nowhere have I said POC should be above criticism. Your reply confirms my personal view which I am entitled to.

I have been on the receiving end of many racially charged subtle and not so subtle comments and when I have explained their comments are racist and offensive I am told to lighten up, not be so sensitive, they are only joking and in no way racist that is what I meant.

If I as a POC find your comments to be racist, then believe me that is exactly what they are and you as a white person do not have the right to tell me they are not. Obviously I am not referring to you personally planeplane.

Anyway I'm finding this entire debacle rather tiresome now so will not be commenting further .

Interesting read.
I think Half Royal Harry has little idea of what lies ahead, I think he probably thought he and Meghan would fondly waved off into the sunset.
I reckon the whole debacle is doomed and the outcome will be a very messy divorce in the next three years.
All very sad but totally avoidable.

compulsiveliar2019 · 12/01/2020 17:13

Saw this on Facebook and it sums up how I feel

One day a woman gave up her lucrative career that she loved, worked hard for and excelled at as well as earning millions to be with the man that she loves.

She made the decision, which I am positive was extremely emotional, to pack up her entire life, kiss her loved ones good bye and moved to an entirely different country to be with the man she loves.

She said goodbye to her single mother who raised her on her own and life as she knew it to be with the man she loves.

She gave up any ounce of privacy she had once enjoyed and took on the role gracefully and without hesitation to be with the man she loves.

She is constantly scrutinised, bullied and vilified by the media and is the constant target of relentless racism. The tabloid headlines are vile and sickening to read but the people revel in that kind of hatred toward her but she still shows up, she still smiles for the cameras and she never waivers in her support for her husband. She endures to be with the man she loves.

She chose to carry the baby that both her and her husband wanted, suffering through morning sickness, extreme hormonal changes, aches and pains and all the added risks of pregnancy when under extreme pressure.

She was called too fat, too old and too pretentious for protectively holding her growing belly as she grew a human being inside of her, she knew she would no longer be in control of her own body all the while being called a liar who was faking her pregnancy. All to be with the man she loves.

She went through postpartum anxiety and NEARLY broke down in a public interview, she was not offered love and support from the public instead she was called a drama queen!

Accused of just being a great actor capable of crocodile tears yet, only after years of having her acting abilities scrutinised, but she continued to be the pillar of strength in the public eye and raising her baby boy, to be with the man she loves.

The world never bat an eyelid over everything she gave up. The entire world chewed her up, spat her out and then demanded more.

One day a man said he would not be bullied into playing a game that killed his beloved mum. He and his wife made the choice to put theirs and their childs mental health and well-being first.

That grown man ,who is very capable of making his own choices, decided to give up his career to be with the woman he loves.

And the entire world went mad...

ElspethFlashman · 12/01/2020 17:14

That's behind a Pay wall unfortunately. Sad

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2020 17:15

I think you can pretty much guarantee that H&M are using Tom as a mouthpiece. Everything he says to the press he will have been asked by them to say.

@VivaLeBeaver thanks - I thought so. Looks like a no holds barred interview about the royal family is very much on the cards then...

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 17:15

Has anyone asked Paul Burrell for his expert opinion on all this?

They probably don't need to ask....

DeeZastris · 12/01/2020 17:16

I think if they do a no holds barred interview they will have to expect a lot of stories about their behaviour being leaked to the press. It could well massively back fire on them.

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2020 17:17

@compulsiveliar2019 that was already posted on one of the previous threads and was quite rightly dismissed by PPs as a load of rubbish.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 12/01/2020 17:18

I've seen that already @compulsiveliar2019. It's on one of the other threads. I think someone said it sounded like something out of Take A Break or Chat.

I concur with them.

DeeZastris · 12/01/2020 17:20

Whoever wrote that probably works for Hallmark. What a load of emotive crap.

wishingitwasfriday · 12/01/2020 17:20

Was MM really earning millions from her role in suits? I can't really see how to be honest. I personally know an actress who was a main character in a major, worldwide successful 7 series programme and never earned anywhere near that. Yes, she was an actress but she was never friends with the celebrities that she is today. They've all flocked round her because of what she married into. George Clooney? Oprah? I would bet my house that they'd barely heard of her before her engagement.

Getitwright · 12/01/2020 17:20

@compulsiveliar2019, oh gosh. First we had Saint Diana, now Saint Meghan. Facebook needs to get a grip.

Ritascornershop · 12/01/2020 17:20

That Facebook quote just above from compulsive ... ew. As if she’s the bravest woman ever to get pregnant. Unheard of to carry a baby and have morning sickness.

I moved to the UK for a few years when I married a Brit. Mostly I loved it, had some homesickness. Granted there was no press scrutiny Grin but many, many people move countries for love. Life is not a romance film.

TheMustressMhor · 12/01/2020 17:21

Oh Lord. Not that crap from Take-A-Break again.
