Whiny and ungrateful DS

So DS (6) has been badgering me for some big outdoor xmas decorations as a few houses in our road have really gone to town - think inflatable snowmen and santas riding sleighs and a shit ton of lights. Money is very tight at the moment and these sort of decorations are expensive but I didn't want to disappoint him so I spent all morning adapting some existing outdoor halloween decorations we had in the shed ( a four foot Frankenstein and a four foot witch) and made them into Santa Claus and Mrs Claus by adding red/white clothes and hats and wigs and a beard for Santa. It took me ages especially I was "helped" (hindered) by DD (20 months) but was still pleased with the finished result. Anyway when he came home from school and saw them he started crying and pulling at their clothes and spent an hour lying on the sofa crying saying "I don't like Santa with a nail in his neck" (he means the bolt) and "I don't want Mrs Claus to have a big nose". I am gutted - me and DD spent ages on them and DD loves them and keeps looking at them out of the window and clapping. I think he's tired from his school play last night as he was in bed very late but I don't think I'm being unreasonable to say he's ungrateful after I went to all that trouble. Also I asked my neighbour what she thought and she said her granddaughter (she's about 12) had said they "looked weird" and had sent a picture of them on her phone to her friends. I don't know why I bothered now but at least DD loves them.

Sorry op but this has me in fits. You sound amazing and creative 10/10 for effort, however I'm still not surprised your ds was a bit overwhelmed by your creativity. Not every six year old can appreciate this sort of genius!

This thread is brilliant - reminds me of the time my parents bought my sisters new "tracksuits" (we all played the same sport together.) The other junior players took the piss because they were actually pyjamas - 40+ years later it still gets mentioned.

He’s not whiny or ungrateful. Why couldn’t you say to him, I am sorry we don’t have the money for X?
My parents always said it to me and I say it to my kids. I am sorry we can’t buy/have/do X as it is too expensive.
It’s better than deeply embarrassing them. And is a life lesson along the way.

I actually think this was really sweet of you. Hopefully he'll feel better about them when he's less tired and grouchy?

Actually crying with laughter at this thread (especially because I misread at first and thought they were 4m high figures). Pleeeeease post pictures!

This has to be the best bit
Tbh it was harder to hide its green face but the beard covers most of it up.

🤣🤣🤣

I just love the idea of a green-faced Santa, as opposed to the more, um, traditional ruddy-cheeked one 😀

(Please let this be true & not made up!

Omg my parents did this sort of thing when I was a kid. I hated it then but think it’s genius now. Plus I’ve long learned to not give a shit what people think. My sister went the other way and still lives her life terrified about what other people might think.

OP, you’ve taken a knocking here, but I know how hard this would hit me because it’s just the kind of thing I would do.

You sound very resourceful and creative and your little boy is lucky to have that. There’s a lesson or two to be learnt in all this for your son, and maybe for you too, but I’d hate to think the words of posters here would stop you in future from trying your best as you clearly have done today.

Aside from the pisstaking, I think you’re awesome to have done this, I would 100% be hoping my kids became friends with your little boy so we could come and see your FrankenSanta up close. Grin

Sorry this has made me laugh till I cry, not because of your creative efforts, I am in awe of your patience, but because it just shows how ungrateful kids are. My kids are 9 and 12, today I gave them their Xmas cards, both of which were funny cause they featured jokes about not having WiFI. Ds1 asked if he could sell his on eBay and Ds2 asked why it didn’t have an Xbox gift card in it. Hence your post resonates with me, there was s time when I was as creative as you. As for posters saying poor child and the like, think it’s about time some of these kids found a filter. Have a glass of wine, you did your best

I’m just loving Franken-santa and Mary Witchmas! After all, it is a Pagan festival. Poor you and your poor DS! It’s a rite of passage mortifying the kids and being mortified by your ‘rents. Xmas Grin

We so need to see some pictures.

Then we can offer some proper advice like perhaps hiding Frankensanta's bolt with a nice bit of festive tinsel. Xmas Envy
