Whiny and ungrateful DS

So DS (6) has been badgering me for some big outdoor xmas decorations as a few houses in our road have really gone to town - think inflatable snowmen and santas riding sleighs and a shit ton of lights. Money is very tight at the moment and these sort of decorations are expensive but I didn't want to disappoint him so I spent all morning adapting some existing outdoor halloween decorations we had in the shed ( a four foot Frankenstein and a four foot witch) and made them into Santa Claus and Mrs Claus by adding red/white clothes and hats and wigs and a beard for Santa. It took me ages especially I was "helped" (hindered) by DD (20 months) but was still pleased with the finished result. Anyway when he came home from school and saw them he started crying and pulling at their clothes and spent an hour lying on the sofa crying saying "I don't like Santa with a nail in his neck" (he means the bolt) and "I don't want Mrs Claus to have a big nose". I am gutted - me and DD spent ages on them and DD loves them and keeps looking at them out of the window and clapping. I think he's tired from his school play last night as he was in bed very late but I don't think I'm being unreasonable to say he's ungrateful after I went to all that trouble. Also I asked my neighbour what she thought and she said her granddaughter (she's about 12) had said they "looked weird" and had sent a picture of them on her phone to her friends. I don't know why I bothered now but at least DD loves them.

This is the sort of thing my dad would have (and still would) done.
We always wanted the cool stuff from the big shops and he would adapt something or make a weird homemade version and we’d die of embarrassment at how weird it all was.
Now I really appreciate it and can see it was all done with love and kindness and his quirky personality.
So give him 30 years and I’m sure he’ll look back and feel bad for throwing a tantrum! In the mean time let the youngest enjoy it and say to DS that next year he can pick one or two bits (buy them second hand on eBay or something in January!)

The bolt is mainly hidden by the collar of santa's coat but DS recognised it from hallowe'en so he knows it's there. Tbh it was harder to hide its green face but the beard covers most of it up. From a distance they look decent.

FrankenSanta

Is is pronounced 'fronken-shanta' ickleboodolph ?

Armadillostoes · 12/12/2019 21:33

YABVU-Your poor DS! Frankenstein dressed as Father Christmas would be enough to traumatise anyone. And if you had told him that he had outdoor decorations he would have been imagining something amazing.

billy1966 · 12/12/2019 21:33

OP, it sounds like you are a very creative, caring Mum.
I must admit I wouldn't have entertained him.
Try not to take it personally, hard I know, when you went to such efforts.
💐

EvilPea · 12/12/2019 21:34

Oh op. Bless you. Sometimes when they are tired they are just knobs.

littlepaddypaws · 12/12/2019 21:34

you tried but it didn't work out this time, sounds a bit 'nightmare on elm street' tbh

ooooohbetty · 12/12/2019 21:34

I think it sounds great. I love things that are a bit quirky. Can we have a photo?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/12/2019 21:34

Has the frankensanta got a green face?

BenevolentEzza · 12/12/2019 21:35

😂 Nightmare before Christmas 😂

TirisfalPumpkin · 12/12/2019 21:36

It sounds amazing. Please come and do my house!

RainbowsAndUnicorns23 · 12/12/2019 21:36

Can you post a picture?

Maneandfeathers · 12/12/2019 21:37

Sorry OP it does sound like the type of thing some kids would die of embarrassment over Grin

At least you tried!

Quirrelsotherface · 12/12/2019 21:38

OP, YABU and you need a better understanding of 6 yo boys.

recklessruby · 12/12/2019 21:38

Please OP a pic. Would love to see them. Sorry he s ungrateful.

PriscillaTheHun · 12/12/2019 21:40

Sorry OP. But that does sound shit and embarrassing.

B&M and Home Bargains sell Christmas lights. Couldn't you have just got a box of those and put around?

Crimboitis · 12/12/2019 21:41

Photo or it never happened 🤣

Wildorchidz · 12/12/2019 21:41

He’s not whiny and ungrateful. He’s upset and probably afraid he will be laughed at.

Cakeandcustard123 · 12/12/2019 21:46

Please please pleeeaaassseeeee send a photo

Booboosweet · 12/12/2019 21:47

I would have just said no to his first request but said that we could do some decorations indoors. A 6 year old will have no appreciation of the effort you put in.

kenandbarbie · 12/12/2019 21:47

This is so funny!!

gyreandgimble · 12/12/2019 21:48

YABU. It was very sweet of you to go to all that effort but I’d have died of embarrassment at your DS’ age. Also, Santa with a bolt through his neck is a bit wrong. Makes me think of the urban myth about the mall that stuck Santa on a crucifix.

Oly4 · 12/12/2019 21:49

I agree that he’s not whiny and ungrateful. He wanted lights like the others on the street, not some makeshift Halloween thing. You’d have been better off telling him that all your money is being spent on Christmas food/other nice things. He’d have understood that.
It’s like when as a kid you want the real say Paw Patrol... but you’re parents get you some knock off from the market.
You just know and it makes you feel like they don’t care...
Better to say it s out of your budget..

Howmanymorecantherebe · 12/12/2019 21:51

Photo please!

Obsidian77 · 12/12/2019 21:52
