https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7679223/Prince-Harry-Meghan-Markle-not-spending-Christmas-Sandringham.html

Sorry for the Meghan Markle thread and DM link, but I have found this really amusing today.

Story out today saying Harry and Meghan apparently aren't spending Xmas with the Queen this year. Lots of comments below blaming Meghan, saying she's isolating Harry from his family, saying the Queen must be really upset. Everyone at work was chatting about it today saying similar.

Am I missing something? I mean we don't even know if it's true. But even if it is, aren't they entitled to spend Xmas as they please? She has her own mother she may want to see.

Ok I get that it's the Queen and it's the usual tradition but is it really a big deal?

Above link to report from 2012 re:Wills and Kate. So it's not only a recent Meghan interest where the royals spend Christmas.

mumwon · 13/11/2019 17:44

meghan wants to spend first Christmas with her mum - rather than her dh father/step mum & numerous cousins aunts uncles & grand parents - I bet they will be visiting at New Year or next Christmas if she had been any other new mum on mn - lets imagine, have had a new baby & my dh & I want to stay with my dm (who is by herself & whose first grandchild this is) but dh family are pressuring me to go to their big country house with several odd & bossy family members, I want to have a laid back Christmas would I be AIBU to ignore them & visit later??

Itstheprinciple · 13/11/2019 17:46

FGS every time I try and post Harry's wife's name it changes the spelling and loses the h.

LaurieMarlow · 13/11/2019 17:48

They have a duty to do as they are Royalty. They don't want to do their duty.

Their 'duty' is to attend state events and support charity.

Sandringham is a private celebration, in the Queen's privately owned property. It's not their 'duty' to sip cocktails at the family house party. It's an invitation that can be accepted or declined.

RubbingHimSourly · 13/11/2019 17:53

It's pathetic. It's not as though the Queen's some lonely old lady with it a 2 bar, electric fire for company. Hmm

MM is also an only child, I don't blame her for wanting to spend Christmas with her mum.

JoyceDivision · 13/11/2019 17:53

Will the queen be on.mumsnet moaning that her Dil doesn't want to spend baby's first Christmas at hers and she hadn't been invited to theirs?

percheron67 · 13/11/2019 17:58

I haven't seen the article but I imagine the complaints are from people who are cross about the way she is trying to "modernise" the Monarchy. She has no comprehension of tradition and it is galling to see what she is doing.

I am a Monarchist and have no reason to want a loud, bossy American altering our British ways.

'Sandringham is a private celebration, in the Queen's privately owned property. It's not their 'duty' to sip cocktails at the family house party. It's an invitation that can be accepted or declined.'

Yes but this year you'd have thought it would have been a good idea to go and show a united front with other royals. Timing wise it looks like they are backing off from other members of the RF even more.

They've had a bad year publicity wise, a few waves with the rest of them wouldnt have hurt surely.

CrapeDiem · 13/11/2019 17:59

I'm surprised that no-one here or in the press seems to have noticed that she looks around 5-6 months pregnant. Maybe that might have something to do with their decision?

LaurieMarlow · 13/11/2019 18:00

Yes but this year you'd have thought it would have been a good idea to go and show a united front with other royals

It's also their first year with their baby. So they want a quiet one, just like K&W did.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/11/2019 18:01

Are the press not only focusing on MM because they're not allowed to report on Harry's brothers affair?

Certainly diverts attention from the real story.

PortiaCastis · 13/11/2019 18:01

Jesus wept folks won't be happy until the woman dies!

YABVVU for not only reading, but linking to that vile publication that calls itself a newspaper.

This makes very little sense overall and none in relation to their decision not to go to Sandringham for Christmas. Were you complaining when Kate skipped it? Or is it just Americans skipping it that annoys you?

The80sweregreat · 13/11/2019 18:03

My mum was brilliant at Christmas! ' you do what you want and we will see you when it's suits you' . I miss my dear old mum.
Her Christmas was her midnight mass and a nice Christmas pudding and seeing us whenever! My in laws were a different kettle of fish however and there was usually a row.
I'm sure the royal family are quite stuffy and all those traditional things would be very restrictive for most people I would imagine.
Esp with babies or toddlers. Must be hard going even with hired help and nannies about!

Pannalash · 13/11/2019 18:04

I would love to spend Christmas with the Queen (misses the point of the thread) Smile

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2019 18:05

What bits of Royal duty don’t they want to do?

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2019 18:06

“I'm surprised that no-one here or in the press seems to have noticed that she looks around 5-6 months pregnant. Maybe that might have something to do with their decision?”

She didn’t when she was wearing a close fitting leather skirt two weeks ago!

MarziPam · 13/11/2019 18:07

'I'm sure the royal family are quite stuffy and all those traditional things would be very restrictive for most people I would imagine.'

Yes but it isnt like they're all crammed into a 3 bedroomed semi having to sleep on lilos and queue for the bathroom.

I don't know really, I can understand wanting the first Christmas with a baby to be at home however I do think spending it with extended family can be lovely too. Especially since she said no one seems to ask how she is, maybe they would if she went?

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2019 18:08

“She has no comprehension of tradition and it is galling to see what she is doing.”

What, exactly and specifically, is she doing?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/11/2019 18:10

Feel sorry for MM, no one wants to spend their Christmas with their Nanna-in-law, her two bar electric fire and her brekky cereals in Tupperware. The only plus side to all this constant shizzle is the next series of The Windsors should be good. Generally shows up this media crap for what it is, hope they’re brave enough.......the supposed affair, the brothers ‘feud’, uncle Andrew’s paedo links, the MM press hyenas.

PortiaCastis · 13/11/2019 18:11

This was taken on 25th October as in 18days ago.
The Duchess is not 5-6months pregnant

The80sweregreat · 13/11/2019 18:12

I would hate doing anything with the royals.
Only thing that looks vaguely good is the Highland games in Scotland ; they always look happier up there I think : more relaxed.
Having to listen to the Duke's stories about his Navy days might be interesting but any other chat would be a bit boring and you would feel on show all the time. Not for me! I have a feeling that Kate is much better with all this : not sure why and I have no clue but she would grin and bear it I think then kick back with her own family another time!
Meghan is just a different character.
We all are

GladAllOver · 13/11/2019 18:12

If there is anything more fucking stupid than the Mail, it's people who believe anything they say about royalty.

Or about anything else.
