AIBU to be enraged by 'inspirational' quotes

I have just received a card with this gem on it ...
'When you look into a field of dandelions, you can either see a hundred weeds or a hundred wishes'

It's given me the rage as it (a) is so twee it makes me want to vomit (b) doesn't fucking make sense - why would dandelions be wishes? and (c) sometimes you need to see the weeds i.e. face reality

I know I am probably BU but seriously? Why do people feel the need to pass on this stuff ??

YANBU

They are extremely wanky

Crunchymum · 07/09/2019 14:19

What was the card in aid of?

BritWifeinUSA · 07/09/2019 14:19

I think people think it makes them sound poetic.

Don’t get me started on “live laugh love”...

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 07/09/2019 14:20

When you blow a dandelion you make a wish presumably.
I am not a fan of that sort of thing myself, but some people find them helpful.
We have some handsoap that says 'When life gives you limes make lemonade' which doesn't even make sense! It doesn't smell particularly nice either.

ScreamingValenta · 07/09/2019 14:22

YANBU - I find them tedious and irritating.

However, the 'wishes' reference is to the tradition of making a wish when you blow the seeds off a dandelion clock.

Ellisandra · 07/09/2019 14:23

It’s wanky, but it does make senses because there’s a tradition of wishing on dandelion clocks.

I once lost my shit at my husband when he shared an inspirational quote meme with me. And I do not lose my shit lightly.

dollydaydream114 · 07/09/2019 14:25

I particularly dislike the really smug ones that basically imply happiness is a choice.

My sister used to share a lot of mental health related ones and even though she was being well-meaning they were so wildly trite (and inaccurate) that I actually had to unfollow her when I was ill with depression because I couldn’t deal with the nonsense.

noworklifebalance · 07/09/2019 14:27

YADNBU - I think I, or maybe it was someone else, started a similar thread several months ago. Clearly I identified so strongly with it that I couldn't differentiate them (if it was someone else) from me.

noworklifebalance · 07/09/2019 14:28

I should have stopped typing after the first 6 letters of my last post

Mysterian · 07/09/2019 14:28

Hang on in there Perplexed, and remember it takes more muscles to frown than smile!

StealthPolarBear · 07/09/2019 14:30

Op, being enraged drags you down. Be like a polar bear, let it all roll away from you and you will live the life you were destined to live in calm serenity.

Sugarplumfairyfartface · 07/09/2019 14:31

Get what you're saying and yes bit wanky but what the quote is actually saying is you can either look at things negatively or look at things positively. If u just see the wankiness then you are in fact extremely pessimistic if that makes u happy great but if u choose to see lots of wishes instead of weeds u would feel happier and it makes perfect sense cos if you blow dandelions fluff u make a wish and it comes true I was taught that as a child and twee as it is it does make me. Smile wanky or not just saying ...

MarthasGinYard · 07/09/2019 14:33

Oh hunz
Just LIVE, LOVE and LAUGH

ilovemytumbledryer · 07/09/2019 14:36

I take it you see weeds, OP?

testing987654321 · 07/09/2019 14:39

I feel your rage too. I just hate feeling manipulated and inspirational quotes always give me the rage too.

Before anyone says it, I probably am a not very nice negative person.

crustycrab · 07/09/2019 14:41

Don't look back, you're not going that way Star

TemporaryPermanent · 07/09/2019 14:43

Surely it would be more inspirational to say 'when you look into a fiekd if dandelions you may be looking at a gardening business opportunity'? Come on Brexit britain!

SmudgeButt · 07/09/2019 14:43

The only saying I really like I saw on an apron years back.

"if it's not one thing, it's your mother."

so true.

The rest is tosh - especially the FB ones that say "I know my true friends will pass this on and also back to me" No. Your real friends are the ones that pick you up at 2 am when you drunkenly phone them for help.

StealthPolarBear · 07/09/2019 14:43

Crusty, it needs to be 'your not going'. These quotes might be inspirational but they're not grammatical ;)

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/09/2019 14:44

Dance like no one's watching! Why would I think people would even watch me dance, unless I was stripper I guess

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/09/2019 14:45

No point just complaining about it and doing nothing, OP - you need to be the change you want to see Grin

They are truly appalling, though.

"Where others see vomit, change your way of looking at things and feel blessed to have Vimto."

MarthasGinYard · 07/09/2019 14:46

Why would I think people would even watch me 'dance, unless I was stripper I guess'

GrinGrin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/09/2019 14:47

"if it's not one thing, it's your mother."

I thought that was the accepted definition of a Freudian slip: where you say one thing, but mean your mother Grin

TamarindCove · 07/09/2019 14:47

YANBU.

morrisdog · 07/09/2019 14:48

When you blow the dandelions, you make a wish
