AIBU to be enraged by 'inspirational' quotes

I have just received a card with this gem on it ...
'When you look into a field of dandelions, you can either see a hundred weeds or a hundred wishes'

It's given me the rage as it (a) is so twee it makes me want to vomit (b) doesn't fucking make sense - why would dandelions be wishes? and (c) sometimes you need to see the weeds i.e. face reality

I know I am probably BU but seriously? Why do people feel the need to pass on this stuff ??

I always wonder if people who have LIVE, LAUGH and LOVE signs in their living rooms have CHEW in the dining room, SNORE in the bedroom and SHIT in the bathroom.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Foslady · 09/09/2019 14:13

I have a FB who makes up her own inspirational quotes, signs them and puts (feel free to share, but credit me) at the end. They are embarrassingly crap grin

Pure gold!Grin

No, but there is a u in cunt Grin

I once saw a hideous canvas in Vinegar Hill that said. ‘The best Christmas present is a family wrapped up in each other’. Truly vomitous. I also hate ‘sleep ‘ ‘bathe’ ‘relax’ type signs. Tempted to spell out shit in silver letters above my loo!

'There is no I in team'

True, but if you look carefully, there is a 'me'

Yip, utter bollocks

Bit like those wooden plaques folk gave on their walls, love, laugh, live or whatever

managedmis · 09/09/2019 19:14

Oops, see my witty comment has already been mentioned

I really like them but I also like the joke ones too. They are helpful to me as little capsules that can get me through difficult days.

Curmudgeonly cynic here. Pardon my scepticism, but if revel in the gutter you're lying in rather than looking at the stars [blech] then it'll likely take more than a few trite motivational quotes to transform you into an eternal optimist.

As to this PP: “it’s never your most successful friends posting inspirational quotes” I had to smile at this. An extended family member is constantly posting memes exhorting others to 'be kind, you don't know what others are going through'. Now don't get me wrong, as a principle it's commendable. But this particular person is completely lacking an empathy gene: insensitive, rude, callous, and wouldn't know the meaning of kindness if it leapt up and smacked her on the bum. I can only assume she's intending 'be kind' to mean others' behaviour to her as opposed to hers toward them. If it's the latter, then in 20 years I certainly haven't seen any evidence of it.

I suspect twee memes are very often an indication of protesting too much.

And the pig got up and slowly walked away .... Grin

Do have to say though to say that a pearl of Ernest Hemingway's wisdom has often sustained me through the darkest phases of a writing project. And oddly enough, it's often got me past first base when I've been seriously thinking of abandoning it:

'The first draft of anything is shit'.

I have always found it a bit ironic in my line of work that a large proportion of the live, laugh, love signs are in the houses where literally all of the family are having constant domestics with each other over the most mundane shit. Definitely no laughing or loving going on and even living is questionable.
