To think 4 pints is a lot to drink

About twice a week (including every single Friday) DH goes out with his mates and drinks about this much. If it's a special occasion, it's more, but this is the norm.

He thinks of this is very moderate (and to be fair, he drank a LOT more in his youth. He's now 50).

The thing is, I find him really annoying when he comes home from the pub (and wants to noisily eat next to me while I'm watching my sitcoms/whatever), and if I'm honest I find him really unattractive when he's been drinking. It also means he is a pain in the arse every Saturday morning, and has no energy and is in a bad mood all day (though he denies it).

AIBU to be fed up?

It’s not a great deal for a bloke

Isithometimeyet0987 · 18/06/2019 18:43

4 pints wouldn’t even make me tipsy so I’d say it’s not a lot. Probably quite a normal amount for a quick drink. How long is he out for op? It wouldn’t take me or anyone I go out with very long to drink 4 pints.

LadderLongLegs · 18/06/2019 18:43

Thanks @BendydickCuminsnatch. Yes - the soppy eyes plus bad temper plus loud belching combo. Mmm, sexy....

But whatever the amount it ruins every Saturday for you. That would annoy me. We would be having words at the very least. Which would probably escalate into me locking him out. My friend used to make her OH sleep in the shed.

OH goes out on a Friday drinks max. 1.5 pints second one a shandy. He is not drunk, but god he has awful wind all night in bed which I hate.

anonforthespies43267 · 18/06/2019 18:44

My DH is a bit of a lightweight but I don’t think 4 pints is much, I’m the one more likely to get drunk out of us both though.
The most annoying thing he will do is fall asleep & snore on the sofa and he’ll still get up early with the dogs the next day so I can sleep in.
I think your issue is probably him irritating you & being crap the next day rather than the amount of drink x

LadderLongLegs · 18/06/2019 18:44

And yes to those saying perhaps it's an underestimate....

Good points @anonforthespies43267 and @justasking111.

It might not sound a huge amount for a night out, but at 6%, it could be 13.5 units in one evening (if my calculations are correct!!), which is practically the recommended units for the week, and he's doing it twice. Not taking into consideration anything else he might be drinking during the week. Obviously it's entirely up to him if he wants to drink this much though.

I'm not surprised he is tired and grouchy the day after though.

mum11970 · 18/06/2019 18:46

I don’t think 4 pints is a lot either. We went for a meal last night and I had 3 pints, felt completely sober and certainly no hangover.

SgtFredColon · 18/06/2019 18:47

I wouldn’t be particularly drunk on 4 pints but I would have a bit of a hangover! I get a hangover from 2 drinks these days (40)

Benes · 18/06/2019 18:47

Another one saying 4 pints isn't that much. I guess if you haven't a drink though it could be annoying.
Why don't you go out with him?

Jsmith99 · 18/06/2019 18:48

I’m just settling in for a session when I’m on my fourth pint. For a bloke, 4 pints is nothing.

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 18/06/2019 18:48

Mine would be drunk and irritating on 4 pints, he doesn't usually have more than 2. He only weighs about 10 stone though, which is a factor. It's not really the total amount that's the issue, it's that it's spoiling your weekends.

Lllot5 · 18/06/2019 18:49

I think four pints twice a week( I thought you said) is a lot. I’d be drunk any way. Perhaps he’s lying about how much he’s having.
I hate drunks.

LadderLongLegs · 18/06/2019 18:49

Well, I'm listening to you all, and it's helping me to not think he's being U.
@Benes, we have kids, so tend to go out separately

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 18:49

The thing is units don’t correlate with how drunk or hungover you are, they’re just a (made up) guideline to illustrate at which drinking levels your long term health could be affected. Nothing to do with your ability to actually drink the limit

LadderLongLegs · 18/06/2019 18:51

Thanks to those understanding my issue with it (even if he's not being unreasonable per se).

Good point about the weekly units. He must be having double what's recommended, even on a low key week.

OP posts:
forkfun · 18/06/2019 18:52

If it's premium lager, that's about 12 units of alcohol for each night out, so 24 units a week. Recommended limit is 14 units per week. I think it's quite a lot. I'd have 1.5-2 pints on a night out. My partner might have 4, but that would be maybe once a month, not twice a week. Def not great for his health.

LadderLongLegs · 18/06/2019 18:52

I'm actually really quite surprised by how normal (or even light) this is seen as. But am taking note.

OP posts:
BouncingBanana · 18/06/2019 18:55

4 pints is nothing. I drink more than that on a weekend and i can still walk in a straight line.
You would hate to be married to my husband OP, he can get through a dozen pints, half a bottle of red, and a bottle of rum on a weekend. He's still standing and coherent at the end of it.
We're both in our fifties.
Your Husband isn't BU OP.

jackstini · 18/06/2019 18:55

Another one here thinking it's not a lot

Get he is annoying you though.
Could you ask him to come home later or just go straight to bed?

LadderLongLegs · 18/06/2019 18:57

Could you ask him to come home later or just go straight to bed?

This may be my answer. I just want to sit and watch Frasier in peace, with no one belching sweet, beery nothings in my ear...

OP posts:
FancyAPint · 18/06/2019 18:58

You're a lot of fun OP!

I suspect he's lying about the number of pints as he knows what you'd be like if you knew it was a lot more!

4 pints is average

Newmumma83 · 18/06/2019 19:01

@sweeneytoddsrazor I have a foggy head after three bottle of Budweiser now ... and I am 35 ..😂😂 . I don’t get drunk on it though ... some people can’t handle it ( though I am out of practice and with all things practice makes perfect 4 pints used to be nothing when it was a regular thing )

TabbyMumz · 18/06/2019 19:01

Wow....4 pints is massive. My dh makes one pint last all night. Apart from the alcohol amount, 4 pints of liquid in one sitting is far too much liquid.
