To think 4 pints is a lot to drink

About twice a week (including every single Friday) DH goes out with his mates and drinks about this much. If it's a special occasion, it's more, but this is the norm.

He thinks of this is very moderate (and to be fair, he drank a LOT more in his youth. He's now 50).

The thing is, I find him really annoying when he comes home from the pub (and wants to noisily eat next to me while I'm watching my sitcoms/whatever), and if I'm honest I find him really unattractive when he's been drinking. It also means he is a pain in the arse every Saturday morning, and has no energy and is in a bad mood all day (though he denies it).

AIBU to be fed up?

It's not a lot

TabbyMumz · 18/06/2019 19:03

Isn't one pint over the drink drive limit?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 18/06/2019 19:03

I think it's a lot, that's between 8.8 and 12 units a night so doing it twice a week is well over the recommended amount.

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 19:04

How tabby? It would be flat after an hour!

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 19:04

Flat and warm. Bleugh

cushioncovers · 18/06/2019 19:08

4 pints isn't a lot but the hungover behaviour every Saturday would piss me off.

SunshineSpring · 18/06/2019 19:08

Another unusual voice saying I think its a lot for a regular session. An occasional night out (once month, maybe) fine.
Twice a week? Excessive, imo.

crazyasafox · 18/06/2019 19:10

4 pints of beer on a night out is not much.

YABU.

Some men have 6-8 pints. Some have even more!

Tfoot75 · 18/06/2019 19:12

I'm a bit shocked by the responses showing just how normalised binge drinking is. I could never manage 4 pints (more liquid than I drink in a day!) and if I did I'd certainly be extremely drunk and have a dreadful hangover the next day. Its equivalent to a bottle of wine. The damage to the liver is the same whether you're puking drunk (as I would be) or walking in a straight line, it's just your brain that's grown used to the substance abuse and needs more to achieve the same effect.

tomtom1999xx · 18/06/2019 19:12

I know people who drink 10 pints on a night out Grin

ThursdayLastWeek · 18/06/2019 19:15

But is this an Out Out night though?
If DH is home before I’m in bed that would suggest 'quickish catch up' as opposed to 'session' and in that case 4 pints, every Friday, over 2/3 hours IS quite a lot IMO.

And if it’s an out out kind of night, then sure, 4 pints isn’t a lot but should it be happening every week??

I dunno, i can drink a lot over an afternoon with food (party or bbq for eg) but 4 pints in a shirt space of time would leave me feeling rough.

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 19:16

tfoot75 liver damage isn’t based on how much of a lightweight you are.

RubberTreePlant · 18/06/2019 19:16

I think the mismatch between you is the problem.

bellajay · 18/06/2019 19:20

Is the actual number of pints he drinks relevant? Surely it’s his resulting behaviour that’s the problem, if he drank 4 pints then came home, made you a cup of tea and pissed off to the spare room, emerging bright and refreshed the next morning, would you be happy with that?

Isn't one pint over the drink drive limit?

In England, it's unlikely for your average adult. It may be for some adults, but not generally.

From the Gov. uk sites: The rate at which your body absorbs alcohol depends on a number of factors, such as your sex, weight and stress levels.

Also: One person may be okay to drive after one or two drinks, while another is over the drink-drive limit after only one. You can get a rough estimate of your blood alcohol content (BAC) level using our morning after calculator: www.confused.com/car-insurance/morning-after-calculator

Thanks for all the posts, whether they're YABU or (the occasional) YANBU.
I'm listening.
It may be mismatched family expectations, yes. His dad is a drinker. Mine is a high level martial arts teacher, and doesn't drink.

Hes not driving anyway is he?

Yes, totally. Good point.

Those who are belittling OP for 'not being fun', that's really unfair.

A drunk person is not someone you relish being around if you're sober.

She says they have kids so can't both go out together. However much her DH is drinking, he is different and belligerent when he comes in.. that is not something that anyone should have to accept on a regular basis.

BlackForestCake · 18/06/2019 19:24

This is not binge drinking. Binge drinking is when you don't come home. Or you come home and go to bed and then get up and start drinking again.

Four pints of normal beer once a week is not a huge amount. But the 6% beer you say he's having is 50% stronger than normal beer, so he’s drinking the equivalent of six pints, twice a week. That is quite a lot. If he’s hungover a lot I would suggest he cut back a bit. He could switch to weaker beer and still have the same time in the pub but consume 50% less alcohol and feel better in the morning.

Singlenotsingle · 18/06/2019 19:25

How do you know it's only 4 pints? I bet it's more

TabbyMumz · 18/06/2019 19:26

@TomTom......"I know people who drink 10 pints".....they really don't sound nice to know.

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 19:28

blackforest 6% is 50% stronger than what? I’ve just googled the lager brands I could think of- Grolsch, Stella, peroni, Budweiser and calling and theyre all 5-6% apart from carling which is 4

BouncingBanana · 18/06/2019 19:28

@Tfoot75.
Both mine and my husbands liver is fine. We both have an annual M.O.T and no problems noted.
Probably due to being preserved with the alcohol Grin

TabbyMumz · 18/06/2019 19:29

@BlackForestCake....This is not binge drinking. Binge drinking is when you don't come home. Or you come home and go to bed and then get up and start drinking again".....what you have described is not binge drinking. Binge drinking is drink a he'll of a lot of alcohol in one go, then not drinking for ages....ie weeks or months....basically not drinking all the time but when you do, going overboard, then have another gap
