To think 4 pints is a lot to drink

About twice a week (including every single Friday) DH goes out with his mates and drinks about this much. If it's a special occasion, it's more, but this is the norm.

He thinks of this is very moderate (and to be fair, he drank a LOT more in his youth. He's now 50).

The thing is, I find him really annoying when he comes home from the pub (and wants to noisily eat next to me while I'm watching my sitcoms/whatever), and if I'm honest I find him really unattractive when he's been drinking. It also means he is a pain in the arse every Saturday morning, and has no energy and is in a bad mood all day (though he denies it).

AIBU to be fed up?

@IAmAlwaysLikeThis Another German here, living in the UK. I agree, Germans drink a lot and we also have issues with alcoholism, but the culture is definitely different. Not nearly as much pressure to drink, no one would get accused of 'nursing a pint' or not being fun for having a soft drink. I've been here for ages now and still find it somewhat weird how invested people seem to be in what someone else is drinking, particularly when it's not alcoholic. I remember ordering a coffee in a pub up North in the late 90s. The whole room burst into laughter. I had no idea what I'd done wrong. Glad that has changed now.
Having said all of this, I love the social culture of buying rounds. It's very friendly and convivial (though it probably contributes to binge drinking).

notsohippychick · 19/06/2019 14:44

If you think that a mans recommended limit per week is 14 units then it might be too much.

However if he’s hungover on 4 pints then yes. It’s too much. Xxx

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 14:46

Ok I have googled. “Danger if too much liquid”
First 5 returns:
(Nb: all refer to water because the actual danger is sodium poisoning. Not an issue with beer)

www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/features/water-intoxication

How much would you have to drink? An enormous amount- gallons and gallons” “in rare cases”

www.healthline.com/health/overhydration#prevention

Talks about endurance athletes and kidneys not being able to process water

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/318619.php

water intoxicating associated with 10-20L of water in just a few hours

www.msdmanuals.com/home/hormonal-and-metabolic-disorders/water-balance/overhydration

Drinking too much water rarely causes overhydration because normal kidneys easily excrete excess water.

Can’t believe I actually did that 🤣

A lot of the more aggressive posts on this thread may well be from those trying to justify their own relatively high consumption

I know you have issues, but I don't think this is the case. No one seems to feel the need to justify what they drink on this thread, instead it's being met with amusement.

The amusement on the one beer is sitting all night with one drink. Doesn't matter if it's beer, lemonade or coffee. If you spend a few hours in one location it's unusual to sit nursing one drink all night. I understand there may be financial issues that cause that. But normally people don't sit nursing one drink all night, irrelevant of what that drink is.

But to make a leap people are justifying their own consumption is clearly misdirected, as no one posting clearly remotely is bothered by how much they drink and is happy to admit it.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 19/06/2019 15:16

"The amusement on the one beer is sitting all night with one drink. "

Why on earth is that amusing?

Surely it's really not your business how quickly or slowly someone drinks.

AtrociousCircumstance · 19/06/2019 15:20

Four pints is a lot I think. Not a quick drink - more like getting pissed.

People have different tolerances of course. But the damage to the body is just the same.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 15:26

Well what if it were coffee IAmAlwaysLikeThis? Wouldn’t you find it amusing if someone missed a coffee all night? Wouldn’t you point out they’d be sipping cold coffee after a couple of hours?!

ACPC · 19/06/2019 15:40

I think he's talking shite claiming he has four pints. Sounds like 5-6. My dh is the same op. Keep watching Frasier and tell him he's to go to bed after the pub. After 20 years of very different drinking patterns, my dh just accepts I find him annoying with a drink and I accept his love of a few too many.

SuperSara · 19/06/2019 15:59

He drinks quite strong beer (often 6%)

That's very strong for beer that comes in pints and very rare to find that strength on draught.

What is it that he's drinking?

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 16:00

Supersara that’s perfectly normal. I posted before that most U.K. lager beer brands are between 5-6%

jennymanara · 19/06/2019 16:19

I take a few hours to drink a pint of beer. Not nursing it, I am just a slow drinker.

omione · 19/06/2019 16:28

Crikey, You wouldnt manage with my DH he used to drink 12-15 a day everyday plus smoke 60 fags a day, cant bear to addup how much it cost. he is now down to 8 pints once a week

TabbyMumz · 19/06/2019 17:30

Not the same thing at all. A pint is quite a lot of liquid to drink, possibly 5 times a coffee, and whilst a coffee goes cold, a pint is fine. Plus as Ive said before...depends how long your night is. I've been for meals out where we've chatted for 3 hours and I've only had one lemonade.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 17:31

A pint goes warm and flat. That’s the point everyone is making

TabbyMumz · 19/06/2019 17:55

Pasdthecherry.....really doesnt seen to bother him. Very much doubt it goes very warm, just not as cold as when first poured. Everyone has different tastes surely. Have you considered that he might be happy with it like that.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 17:57

Have you had a chance to look at ALL MY GOOGLING about liquid intake btw?

Jemimapuddleduckpancake · 19/06/2019 18:05

No, not for a night out. I don't think it's much at all.

Meangirls36 · 19/06/2019 18:30

Don't be a killjoy. Your supposed to love him why did you marry someone you can't stand? Watch TV another night or have a lazy Saturday and watch TV while he sleeps in. Why can't you tell him to stop burping? Or chew with his mouth closed?

CSIblonde · 19/06/2019 18:39

It's really not 4, he just tells you that as it sounds moderate. If he drank that regularly, he'd have a very mild hangover if at all.

RickJames · 19/06/2019 19:06

I read it @passthecherrycoke Grin

Nice German beer or Dutch blond beer is actually isotonic. If it's cloudy it has the "mutter" in it which makes it quite nutritious. Much better than a fizzy chemical mix like Carling or Fosters that are much weaker.

Awesome after a day cycling or gardening! But Yeah, it does get you quite pissed after a few - it's usually 5.5%+.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 19:06

👍🏻👍🏻🍺

Passthecherrycoke

Don't need to...did my own..basically it's dangerous to drink too much liquid in one go.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 19:18

But yours was wrong, or you didn’t understand it (suspect the latter)

Bluntness100 · 19/06/2019 19:18

tell him he's to go to bed after the pub

This is about her husband, not her child.Confused

LadderLongLegs · 19/06/2019 19:28

Watch TV another night or have a lazy Saturday and watch TV while he sleeps in.

Ha - our DC would have plenty to say about the latter suggestion...
As for the former, Friday is the best night to watch sitcoms, with a nice moderate amount of gin - everyone knows this.
