To think 4 pints is a lot to drink

About twice a week (including every single Friday) DH goes out with his mates and drinks about this much. If it's a special occasion, it's more, but this is the norm.

He thinks of this is very moderate (and to be fair, he drank a LOT more in his youth. He's now 50).

The thing is, I find him really annoying when he comes home from the pub (and wants to noisily eat next to me while I'm watching my sitcoms/whatever), and if I'm honest I find him really unattractive when he's been drinking. It also means he is a pain in the arse every Saturday morning, and has no energy and is in a bad mood all day (though he denies it).

AIBU to be fed up?

I would be shitfaced after 4 pints and throwing up the next day. I think it's a lot.

It also easily fits the definition of binge drinking.

As a one off, I'd think it was OK, but it's the regularity - it's happening twice a week. Am quite surprised by so many people saying it's not much alcohol.

It is actually twice the amount needed for binge drinking. People are just normalised to it.

Two pints of beer is binge drinking! Ha ha! Yeah, I don't think anyone would seriously think that!

Turner69 · 18/06/2019 20:17

I wouldn't consider that 4 pints is an unusually excessive amount personally. I wouldn't feel that drunk, a little bit tipsy maybe.

I can see how it would be annoying though if he comes home and interrupts your favourite tv while loudly eating a kebab or something! (I hate loud eaters Grin) I think I'd tell him that if he wants to go out twice a week can he please be a bit more considerate when he gets home (in a nice way). 4 pints isn't so much that someone can't moderate their behaviour.

LagunaBubbles · 18/06/2019 20:18

The being hungover every Saturday would be incredibly tedious

She never said he was hungover. In fact it duesnt even sound as if he gets drunk reading the follow up posts.

SellFridges · 18/06/2019 20:19

I wouldn’t be drunk after 4 pints. I certainly wouldn’t have a hangover. Can’t actually think it many people I know who would be, especially the men.

tinierclanger · 18/06/2019 20:23

4 pints twice a week actually is a lot to be drinking routinely. Quite happy to be another lonely voice on this. It's easily 10 units a session. My husband would feel rough the next day after that.

Anyway, as a few others have pointed out, if it's wrecking the day after every week, it's too much regardless of any comparison with anybody else.

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 18/06/2019 20:27

I don't think it's loads to drink at all, but am surprised people say that wouldn't be drunk/hungover! I would feel drunk and hungover with 4 pints, and I'm in my early 30s.

If he has 4 pints on a Friday, and sometimes one other night a week, I don't think that's loads

RottnestFerry · 18/06/2019 20:35

Wow....4 pints is massive. My dh makes one pint last all night. Apart from the alcohol amount, 4 pints of liquid in one sitting is far too much.

Far too much for who? Four pints, and more, is easily doable with occasional visits to the gents to make room for more.

Bored40 · 18/06/2019 20:36

Four pints isn't a lot for a 25yr old lad out on an all night session - I do think it's a lot for a 50yr old to be drinking twice a week every week, esp when it's likely to be underestimated. My DH like a drink, he can drink plenty of spirits but would struggle after pint 3 of strong beer.

When people talk about pints as a measure, I often think they're going on what pints were when they first started drinking - for your DH 4 pints now is pretty much double the alcohol content of the beer he would have been drinking at 18. On top of that, due to how we lose muscle mass as we age (regardless of overall size) the impact of the booze is much greater - physiologically we can't handle the alcohol as well as we get older.

lazymare · 18/06/2019 21:31

There’s no way he should be getting a hangover on 4 pints

Why? Beer gives me a hangover no matter how much I have.

It's far too much liquid in one sitting....not long ago they were recommending people drink a certain amount a day, and some people drank too much and it affected their brain.

Paraballa · 18/06/2019 21:51

I think four is a lot. My DH would drink two, maybe three on a big night. But then we don't get drunk. Sounds like OP's DH is drunk when he comes home.

TabbyMumz · 18/06/2019 21:52

Just googled it..recommended amount of liquid per day is 1.2 litres. I litre equals 1.75 pints, so 4 pints is well over what is recommended.

mondaysaturday · 18/06/2019 21:57

Four pints is a LOT, especially of 6% beer. It works out as more alcohol units than drinking an entire bottle of wine in one sitting and I'd be seriously worried about anyone who did that regularly.

wink1970 · 18/06/2019 22:01

Haha DH sometimes comes home like this from work lunches and I sit him behind me (so I am between his legs resting on his fat tummy)and he dozes whilst I watch TV.

More likely though is I come home & cheep away for ages til he makes me a G&T and pauses what he’s watching.

Marriage! What a nuisance! 🤗

Recommended by who? Presumably not the same source that recommends we drink 8 glasses of water a day.

AudacityOfHope · 18/06/2019 22:03

He's bullshitting you, 4 pints Grin

I'd drink that on a fairly sensible midweek night out with DH. And I'm just a little 5'2 lady Smile

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 18/06/2019 22:04

lol only on MN is 4 pints "binge drinking"

FromEden · 18/06/2019 22:04

Sounds like nonsense tbh.

RottnestFerry · 18/06/2019 22:07

Four pints is a LOT, especially of 6% beer.

Where did the 6% come from? For all we know he drinks a 3.2% session ale.

skybluee · 18/06/2019 22:07

@alibongo5 the NHS do and I think they're most likely more informed than us on this thread given that they're medical experts and will have assessed the relevant research and the impact that number of units will have on health. It's individual choice if people want to ignore that but it doesn't mean the guidelines aren't there for a reason.

IGottaSeeJane · 18/06/2019 22:07

I'm sorry but I don't believe drunk and hungover after 4 pints unless he's drinking an astronomically strong beer. Four pints is a standard sort of amount for a quick pub session.

FromEden · 18/06/2019 22:08

lol only on MN is 4 pints "binge drinking"

Not only that, 4 pints of any liquid in a day is dangerously excessive and could you with brain damage Hmm Lol is right

TabbyMumz · 18/06/2019 22:10

@RottnestFerry

By the bus. When they talk about glasses, they don't mean pint glasses! 8 glass could amount to 1.2 litres

bellajay · 18/06/2019 22:11

@Peterpiperpickedwrong I meant relevant to the OP, which is about how his drinking impacts her night in, not his health.
