To think 4 pints is a lot to drink

About twice a week (including every single Friday) DH goes out with his mates and drinks about this much. If it's a special occasion, it's more, but this is the norm.

He thinks of this is very moderate (and to be fair, he drank a LOT more in his youth. He's now 50).

The thing is, I find him really annoying when he comes home from the pub (and wants to noisily eat next to me while I'm watching my sitcoms/whatever), and if I'm honest I find him really unattractive when he's been drinking. It also means he is a pain in the arse every Saturday morning, and has no energy and is in a bad mood all day (though he denies it).

AIBU to be fed up?

The guy who makes one pint last all night 🤢

Warm flat beer and kept his hand on his wallet. Sexy! 😆

NHSChoices' page onWateranddrinkssays: Your body needswateror other fluids to work properly and to avoid dehydration. That's why it's important todrinkenough fluids. In climates such as the UK's,we should drinkabout 1.2 litres (six to eight glasses) offluideverydayto stop us getting dehydrated.

@AudacityOfHope He's not keeping his hand on his wallet....he's drinking one pint because that's all he wants....and he's out with me..not a group where he would pay for a round. You shouldn't have to drink more just because other people want to. And drinking loads is far from sexy.

AudacityOfHope · 18/06/2019 22:18

But how does it not end up flat, and warm? I couldn't make a pint last an hour, never mind an entire evening Confused

FromEden · 18/06/2019 22:23

It doesn't say that's the maximum though does it? Or that any more than that is dangerous?

It well known that 'pints' actually come in different sizes. I can pop down the pub for a quick pint and it will take me all evening to drink it.

samb80 · 18/06/2019 22:29

Doesn't matter if it's 4 pints or 2 pints it's bloody annoying when you have to entertain a grown man after he's been to the pub. My now ex husband thought he could handle his drink but he couldn't and the older he got the less he could handle it.
I feel your pain - it is so depressing

MusicTwilight · 18/06/2019 22:42

I think 4 pints is a lot!

Not maybe when you're 25 and think you can handle it Hmm. Though I still think its a bit much.

But at 50 the alcohol affects you more and I can imagine all the sloppiness, wild-eyedness, noisy eating, would be very off-putting, plus throw in the bleary eyedness or hangovers the next day.

2 pints would be bit merry, 3 pushing it. 4 pints x a weeks seems alot to me, verging on borish ...

MyInnerAlto · 18/06/2019 22:48

Sorry to be the annoying expat, but this thread is a neat illustration of UK drinking culture. The attitude of 4 pints being nothing, a normal 'session'.

Vulpine · 18/06/2019 22:50

4 pints twice a week for a 50 year old man is alot, especially if it affects your behaviour the next day

RottnestFerry · 18/06/2019 23:06

Yet in overall beer and alcohol consumption, we don't even make the top ten. In beer consumption we are 27th. Australia 19th.

The world's biggest beer drinkers

Czech Republic - 142.4 litres per capita
Seychelles - 114.6
Austria - 104.7
Germany - 104.7
Namibia - 102.7
Poland - 99
Ireland - 97.5
Lithuania - 97.1
Belize - 94.7
Romania - 92.1

It's not so much the amount as the pattern, though. The 'night out' culture and its ubiquity across social groups as a de rigueur thing to do.

whitehalleve · 18/06/2019 23:13

I don't think it's a lot either.

Surfingtheweb · 18/06/2019 23:17

My husband drinks about 4 pints of gin 😂

Myotherusernamewastakenagain · 18/06/2019 23:58

I don't think it's too much. My weekday nights out (if I have them) are usually 4 pints and sometimes couple of whiskies. I feel a bit rough the next day but nothing too bad.

LizB62A · 19/06/2019 00:11

For me it depends what it's 4 pints of, specifically.
4 pints of strong beer or 4 pints of a slightly lower ABV beer...

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 19/06/2019 01:08

@RottnestFerry I was about to say that UK really is not top in drinking by far as an immigrant from one of that top coutries...
Only difference really is that it is not ok to end up smashed like many people do here on weekends. It's actually quite shameful.

4 pints is normal Thursday 🤷‍♀️ As we are having big lunches it's actually common to have a pint or two with it too.
However, you can't drive after. 0 tolerance to alcohol.

SunshineSpring · 19/06/2019 05:55

But those big drinking countries drink a) less than the OP's DH on average and b) are likely to spread it slowly over the week, not binge in a couple of sessions.
Austria is 2 litres, 4 pints, a week on average. Probably as a pint a night over 4 nights.

Palegreenstars · 19/06/2019 06:14

I don’t think 4 pints is a lot but I think that’s sort of missing the point.

Do you have kids? Are you happy taking responsibility twice weekly so he can go out boozing?

Does he know you dont find him attractive when he’s tipsy so regularly.

The most important thing is the impact it has on every single Saturday. With or without kids if he’s tired and grouchy every Saturday (and presumably one work day). That’s really dull.

80sMum · 19/06/2019 06:38

@Tfoot75 I agree that alcohol abuse seems to have become normalised. When I go out for a meal with friends, some of them buy themselves a bottle of wine and drink the whole bottle during the evening (sometimes even getting more than that!)

I think that 4 pints of strong beer in one sitting is far too much. If the beer is 6%, as OP says, that's 13.6 units of alcohol: the maximum recommended intake per week is 14 units.

I think many people are drinking into the danger zone without realising it. It's interesting that, from what I've read in the news etc, it's the older generation (50+) who regularly drink too much. Certainly many of my friends and acquaintances, who are all in their 50s and 60s, do.

Bluntness100 · 19/06/2019 07:05

My dh makes one pint last all night

Party time 🤣🤣🤣

honeygirlz · 19/06/2019 07:09

4 pints is 12 units of alcohol and the recommended limit per week is 14. He is having a minimum of 24 units a week.

That’s disgusting, I wouldn’t want him in my bed.

honeygirlz · 19/06/2019 07:11

@80smum cross post, yes closer to 14 units in the case of stronger beer.

TabbyMumz · 19/06/2019 07:18

@bluntness "My dh makes one pint last all night"

"Party time 🤣🤣"
It's this attitude that annoys me. Not everybody likes to swill down loads. There is absolutely nothing wrong with just wanting one pint. If more people had just one pint there would be less strain on the NHS. There are also tons of people who can't drink more due to health reasons. It's childish to make out he's in the wrong and sad, and sitting there with his hand on his wallet as others on here have made out. People should drink less. The attitude here in the UK seems to be that if you go on a night out, it's a competition who can drink the most, whereas in Europe it's more about enjoying the company and social aspect, and not getting drunk.

Teateaandmoretea · 19/06/2019 07:26

It isn't a lot, but it's nonsense that a bloke couldn't get a hangover off four pints. Different people have different tolerance to alcohol, my DH throws up if he drinks more than 3 Shock.

I think in one way yabu op, but being hungover twice a week every week so he can't do anything would be really annoying.
