Neighbours have chopped our tree down

More of a wwyd as know I'm not being unreasonable...neighbour in terrace next to ours have chopped our tree down! It's clearly on our driveway and not theirs. Speechless!

Are you in a Conservation Area or dis the tree have Tree Preservation Order on it?

I would speak to them and say that you want the tree replaced. Mature trees are not cheap.

Are you sure it was them? Have you knocked and asked WTF they were doing? And how do you want remedy? A new tree? Apology?

You'll also have all the business of all the roots left behind - I hate it when they are chopped off at ground level

If you’re in Scotland that’s a criminal offence which carries a two month prison sentence. (According to my solicitor, when my neighbours from hell did similar to my DH’s memorial tree in my back garden.)
In practice, the police let my shit neighbours off with a caution, so I can’t promise you’ll get any justice over your own case, OP. You have my sympathies.

Were you home when they did it? Or did they wait? I think you can get the police involved

I would report this to the police.

They did not ask permission because they were determined the tree must go. I also don't think they would be interested in your opinion on what they have done. The only comfort I can offer is that you will have to bear these things in mind should they ever ask a favour from you.

Think about what you want. Do you want the tree back or the gap tidied up?

Go and speak to them (as calmly as possible) to see if it can be worked out amicably, if they are not apologetic/willing then tell them (calmly) you will be reporting to the police for criminal damage and seeing a solicitor for financial recompense to replant another mature tree.
