Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

@Toomanypaws
I found this:

When foreigner is baptized they choose him/her name and patronymic from the list of names of Orthodox Saints. Since she is Maria they didn't change her name.

As for patronymic according to tradition from the end of 18 century all the German princesses who married Russian princes received patronymic "Fedorovna" in honor of icon of Fyodorovskaya Theotokos.
For example: Maria Fedorovna (wife of Pavel I), Alexandra Fedorovna (wife of Nikolai I), Maria Fedorovna (wife of Alexander III), Alexandra Fedorovna (wife of Nikolai II).

This icon was considered as the patron icon of the Romanov family.

As for surname, they all were Romanovs.

Russian name consists of 3 parts: name, patronymic (possessive adjective from father's name) and surname.
In case with Marie Sophie Fredrica Dagmar she was Maria Fedorovna Romanova.

---
Some people say you that her father was Fyodor. But i think you know that his name was Christian IX of Denmark - definetely not Fyodor. There is no name "Christian" in Russian Orthodox church papers (as well as many other European names). That is why they have to choose other name for her. Usually when foreigner is baptized they use name of godfather for patronymic, but since princesses were not just "average person" idea with godfather was not the best. And they decided to use idea with name of patron icon.

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 02:07

Incidentally, where did they get the Feodorovna from for both Dagmar and Alix? It doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the names of either of their fathers. I've always wondered.

It's a good point. Their fathers were called Christian and Louis, respectively.

Their FILs were both called Alexander.

Marie's MIL, Marie of Hesse, became Maria Alexandrovna. There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern. They're not taking the patronymic from their own fathers. Nor their FILs.

This is a good puzzle for an insomniac night Smile

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 02:10

Since she is Maria they didn't change her name.

She started off as Dagmar of Denmark. It was her MIL who was Marie of Hesse. She might have chosen in honour of her. Or for similarity to her nickname "Minnie". Or both.

Wow. Poor godfathers. Maybe they had unsuitable non-Russian names too, though?

You are repeating yourself. Did you realise?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 30/04/2019 02:18

Yes, I was just explaining where the Feodorovna name came from, I assumed you had missed it in my post.

The Fyodorovskaya icon is the Mother of God in the Russian Orthodox Church, hence being picked as the patronymic for foreign born princesses.

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 02:21

No it's okay, it was just a cross post.

I find it so unusual that Kate’s speaking voice is so at odds with the rest of her demeanour. I recall a video of a photo shoot where she climbed into a small aeroplane over the wind. She was supremely confident, agile coordinated and leapt over the wing with ease. There are photos of her at trooping of colour and Her posture has improved, she’s really owns her height these days and two toddlers don’t stop her being front and centre. Added to this she’s obviously intelligent and has a great family so find it odd she isn’t more confident at speaking. I think she has a humility and an awareness that she’s in her position by grace nor expertise on subjects. Others don’t necessarily have that and I’m definitely not referring to Meghan, I would never, because I love Meghan, we all love Meghan.

Hail Meghan

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 30/04/2019 02:21

As far as I'm aware the custom in the Romanov court for female converts to Russian Orthodoxy was to take the patronymic Feodorovna.
This is from Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God also known as Our Lady of Saint Theodore, which is the patron icon of the Romanov family.

Have also discovered that Xenia one of the daughters of Dagmar (Maria Feodorovna) whilst in exile in England lived at..............Frogmore Cottage.
So Princess/Lady Xenia Sussex has a nice family & historical connection (that's if H&M have a little girl & use the name Xenia.)

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 30/04/2019 02:22

Oops in the time it took me to research & write my post I see I've been beaten to it! Smile

That IS interesting. There were Romanovs and "white" Russian aristos tucked in palaces and grand houses all over England before WW2, but Frogmore cottage specifically!? I wonder if either H or M are much interested in history?

Oooo I could see a baby Xenia - royal but a little bit Illuminati and Hollywood.

I see the DM is gagging for royal baby news or just any royal news. Been a bit of a drought for them. They’re dredging up royal scandals from historical figures, photos of Pippa walking her dog with pram, an article about Harry not giving anything away at the marathon and papa Middleton grabbing takeaway as he waits for news.

Definitely time for that royal baby to emerge and save daily mail from themselves.

Humpy84 · 30/04/2019 02:30

Oh and Kate has been given the hignrest deal of approval from QUeen.

She does seem to love Kate. They shared a blanket. Also in the official royal wedding announcement of W&K the queen described her as “trusty”. Meghan however did not get an adjective. Surely an oversight as she is loved by all and everyone in this thread,

Humpy84 · 30/04/2019 02:31

**seal of approval

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 30/04/2019 02:32

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

All the Russian history is fascinating!
I like the idea of a Russian name for a sussex girl.
So may of the “royal” girl names have been used up.
I think there is only Alice left.

(Although Xenia makes me think of 007 baddie Xenia Onatop)

She could have at least called her "bouncy", or "novel", or maybe "tungsten".

Dear, darling old Meg 😍

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 30/04/2019 02:40

I wonder if the arrival of baby Sussex will be followed within 24 Hours by a pregnancy announcement by Princess Eugenie....?

Meghan is so warm, generous and thoughtful, I’m sure she would be delighted to share the spotlight.
Nay return to the privacy of Frogmore with Baby S and let Eugenie take the full glare of press attention..

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 30/04/2019 02:46

The only other Xenia I know of, is our famous long time poster Xenia with an island.

Humpy84 · 30/04/2019 05:25

@curlyurlytwirly you know I think you could be right about Eugenie being pregnant and making an announcement.

You’re also right that MM will want maximum privacy and wait at least 3 days before she releases official photos of the new baby in matching givenchy couture outfit to her couture dress. The family descending the steps of Windsor castle. It will be very low key. Testino will capture moment.

Seriously though I think today it will be announced at the 9am British time. That’s my guess.

ByeClaire · 30/04/2019 07:02

Tracy Grin the only Xenia worth knowing about in my book

Humpy I don’t think it’s odd that Kate’s public speaking is at odds with the rest of her demeanour; she’s a very physically competent person rather than a verbal one. It’s her forte - she’s naturally very sporty and agile.

strawberrisc · 30/04/2019 07:02

@MagicKingdomDizzy. Fucking great name!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 30/04/2019 07:27

I could see Megs going for Xenia! We don't have a Helena, a Mary, Victoria or an Alexandra either atm so they are all options, I think.

Are there rumours that Eugenie is pregnant then? She seems pretty chilled out but I bet would be quite satisfying to announce bang over Meghans birth!

StoneofDestiny · 30/04/2019 07:34

The Duchess of Cambridge has been made a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order

Another nonsense announcement by the royals rewarding themselves for nothing.
