Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

MissParple

Yes it was. The very lovely Max Irons played Edward IV.

The White Princess was adapted too with different actors. Jodie Cormier (of Killing Eve fame) played Elizabeth of York, wife to Henry VII and mother to Henry VIII.

Dare I say it? Diana - beautiful spritited and feisty even if she was misguided 😖

MyBlueMoonbeam · 29/04/2019 23:52

Spirited not spritited - mind you she could have been a Sprite 😅

Oooo now then - Fanny Gallops aplenty there 🙊

Oh yes Grin A few scenes were quite...er....steamy. I may have watched them more than once Blush

Interestingly, Henry VII very nearly married Katherine instead after losing Elisabeth, but at the last minute it was decided she wouldn't. She was sort of in an odd position, being considered too old for Henry VIII but too young for Henry VII.

That’s not reaaaally true. He never really intended to marry her. Basically Katherine’s father Ferdinand was a massive tightwad and so was Henry VII. Basically all either of them cared about was getting their hands on her dowry. So Ferdinand wanted her and her dowry sending back, but Henry VII wanted them to stay here and mooting a marriage to him was a threat/delaying tactic which never had any serious intent.

Poor Katherine really suffered in the years between Arthur dying and Henry VIII becoming king and marrying her. She was stuck between two skinflints refusing to help her and demanding the other did. She ended up selling everything she had of value, wearing rags and without food often.

I must find this - could do with a bit of steam 🙊

MissParple · 30/04/2019 00:01

Was she living in the English court at the time? Were you expected to pay for your own food?

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 00:08

Ooooh, I know about Prince William of Gloucester. The only handsome British royal there's ever been.

And probably a spy too. Swoon.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 30/04/2019 00:09

I think CoA was considered Spain's problem? I knew she'd lived more or less in penury between marriages but hadn't realised for how long and didn't find that out til later- it's quite glossed over in basic stories.

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 00:17

Swoon 🥰 watched a very interesting documentary on him - not sure if it was on t.v or Netflix

There was on Channel Four a few years ago.

I can't quite get my head around that, getting engaged to your Fiancé's brother after said Fiancé has died.

Didn't Catherine of Aragon do that too?

And Tsar Nicholas' Mum (Princess Dagmar/Empress Marie/Minnie) too. It was apparently quite common with dynastic marriages. Weird to have to switch your allegiance like that.

Saavhi · 30/04/2019 00:17

Am I crazy to think Diana wasn't THAT beautiful. I was born in the 90s and just never saw it.

TooManyPaws · 30/04/2019 00:23

I think Queen Mary probably got the better deal and better brother in the end. Her first fiance had all sorts of rumours about him pre and post death, including being already married without royal permission, frequenting rent boys, and being Jack the Ripper. George was only accused of being already married, I think.

A biography of her that I read said that they were both shy and buttoned up but used to send each other sweet little love notes so they probably were very happy, particularly in the descriptions of after John's birth.

TurquoiseDress · 30/04/2019 00:24

I go off for a few hours to do some adult-ing, then when I return the last thread is completely full and a new one has launched...excellent!

MissParple · 30/04/2019 00:26

Call me snobby but I'd be I wouldn't be thrilled to be betrothed to someone who was on the shortlist of Jack the Ripper suspects.

DialDownTheIanPaisley · 30/04/2019 00:27

All in all a quiet life then Shock

I always thought "strikingly attractive". But people get carried away with Royals, don't they? Bogging them up and flattering them.

Like saying that Diana was a "teacher" or that Charles was "action man", or that MM is a "Hollywood" actress.

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 00:38

You do sound a bit picky Grin

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/04/2019 00:41

I think the other problem that CofA had was that she'd brought a little court of her own with her, and Henry VII refused to support them.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 30/04/2019 00:44

Mary defo got the better deal in George- they did become a love match, I think. They used to write their passions as they were too prim to speak them and some of the writing is very loving. She was an iron lady though- probably just what an awkward bugger like him needed! They seem to have had a happy marriage.

I googled Dagmar aka Maria Feodorovna of Russia as I didn't remember reading this and she did indeed originally say yes to Tsarevitch Nicholas, who died of meningitis and asked her to marry his brother with his dying breath! She eventually did, after mourning and growing close to now Tsarevitch Alexander of her own accord. She'd also fallen in love with Russia though, which helped. In pics she's little to Alexander's large- they look comic!

I know she was a popular Empress who adapted to Russia and didn't get on with DiL Alexandra. She was also quite a young widow- not easy for Alix to work around, and Dagmar/Maria overshadowed her. She also stayed close to her own sister, Queen Alexandra, they had a lovely relationship.

Also, their "royal" standing was initially pretty low but their dad eventually assumed the Danish throne and was as good as marrying his kids off as Victoria!

TooManyPaws · 30/04/2019 01:25

Incidentally, where did they get the Feodorovna from for both Dagmar and Alix? It doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the names of either of their fathers. I've always wondered.

GeordieGenes · 30/04/2019 01:30

Keep it coming! This thread is gold.

JohnandMary · 30/04/2019 01:56

If we’re digressing, a little story about Franz Ferdinand (the band!).

A few years ago, we went to see them in Singapore. At the end of the concert the singer said “you’ve been a great audience. We really love Singapore street food. We’re staying at the Intercontinental so we’d love it if you all come along with some food to share for a bit of a party in the foyer”. It transpired them at the hotel manager had got a bit arsey with one of the band eating noodles in the foyer earlier that day, so I can imagine he was thrilled when 300 people turned up with food that night :).
