Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

Marrying in the family was actually quite common in all classes.

Lots of widowers married their late wife’s younger sister when she came to help look after the children (especially the ones who ended up with another child 6/7 months after the wedding).

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:32

Interestingly, Henry VII very nearly married Katherine instead after losing Elisabeth, but at the last minute it was decided she wouldn't. She was sort of in an odd position, being considered too old for Henry VIII but too young for Henry VII.

How different would things have turned out if that had happened instead? Shock

lyralala I have a Royal obsessive too! I didnt realise how much he knew until he answered a question on Impossible Celebrities by just going 'Stuart, Stuart, Georgean, Georgean, Tudor Tudor' and got them all right!

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:33

I was just thinking the other day that when poor Catherine Howard was married off to Henry she was only 17 or so and he was already old and obese with oozing leg ulcers Envy. It would have been much easier indeed if he'd looked like Jonathan Rhys Myers!

lyralalala · 29/04/2019 23:34

Not sure how it’s funded so I could be speaking out of turn, though I’m sure he’s not mortgaged up to the hilt with it.

It’s leased from the crown estates. Same with Prince Andrew and Royal Lodge.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:34

MissParple Apparently towards the end of his life he was physically repulsive.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo

I read somewhere that Kate & Wills find it funny apparently 😆

I love Anne too & the music before Puppa is brill 😂
I think Beatrice & Eugenie are wonderful - those accents- priceless 👏

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 23:36

Ooh I like the Windsors but I bet some of the RF don't! I can imagine Wills stropping "you're not watching Fleabag anymore" at Kate because Wimpy Will from the Windsors is in it (and then secretly enjoying the nude sculpture of that actor with no willy). Camilla probably binge watches in bed, face pack on, g&t and box of chocs on hand.

noodlenosefraggle · 29/04/2019 23:36

missparple read the Boleyn inheritance by Phillipa Gregory. It's all a fictionalized account of the marriages of Anne of Cleves and Katherine Howard.

lyralalala · 29/04/2019 23:37

noodlenosefraggle I didn’t realise how much I’d taken in until I was in a pub quiz one night. I think my friends are still unconvinced by my protestations about it!

The current obsession the Beatles and, tbh, I wish we could go back to royalty. The period of ‘how do the make lino’ was also a time we longed for a return to royalty!

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:37

He really must have been, MagicKingdomDizzy. The smell from his ulcers must have been something else, not to mention his declining mental state!

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:38

Camilla probably binge watches in bed, face pack on, g&t and box of chocs on hand.

Grin

I bet she smokes in bed too. Old school.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:39

I will look for that, noodlenosefraggle. I've never read any Philippa Gregory actually.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:40

Overweight, ulcers, rotting teeth, bad breath, impotent, lame.

Envy Not envy.

And everyone had to pretend he was attractive and irresistible.

That's obviously what hunting, jousting, beheading, sacking monasteries, drinking, shagging & eating too many swans does to a person 🙈

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 23:41

@lyralalala- as a former Royal Holloway student, I look back fondly on the linoleum manufacturing industry tribute statue in Staines. Former lino-centre of the UK. Although the 1st time I saw it I thought it was a very shit Laurel and Hardy!

@MyBlueMoonBeam me too! Which Mit is your fave?

noodlenosefraggle · 29/04/2019 23:42

I really got into them after reading the other Boleyn girl. It concentrates pin the women at court. I'm currently for others in charity shops.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:43

You never see him shagging and then eating the swans in any of the screen adaptations Grin

TooManyPaws · 29/04/2019 23:43

Also I think their closeness really stepped up after Louise’s birth and how close a call that was for mother and baby.

I read that she was the only family member who has ever got a visit from HM while in hospital. Philip never got a visit!

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:43

MissParple

Highly recommend the Phillippa Gregory books. She's incredibly knowledgeable, especially about the Tudors.

My favourite is the 'White Queen' 'White Princess' 'Red Queen' series. They all overlap in terms of time period, but are from different perspectives.

OP posts:
MissParple · 29/04/2019 23:44

The White Queen was adapted for TV wasn't it?

Andylion · 29/04/2019 23:44

I see I have been to the swoons pic of PW DoG. Great minds and all that Smile

lyralalala · 29/04/2019 23:45

@dshathawaygivesmefannygallops You’d have had a great chat with my girl by the sound of it!

This thread has it all. Serious chat, random interludes and Henry viii’s ulcers. Now Lino Grin

StormyDaniels · 29/04/2019 23:45

Maybe that can be the next referendum, whether to keep the royals or not? It may be divisive but it would be more entertaining to discuss endlessly than Brexit. Then there could be some form of reality tv programme where they try and prove their worth. Royal housewives of Windsor etc.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 23:46

MyBlueMoonbeam

That sort of lifestyle is bound to catch up with you sooner or later Grin
