To think that bikinis on toddlers are vile and wrong..

And to wonder why my Daugher has to wear anything on her top half atall ? I've spend hours this morning trying to find a nice pair of swimming shorts for her and have seen rails and rails of bikinis that are just scaled down versions of adult ones, little triangle tops and everything ! I am struggling to understand why anyone would dress their toddler like a mini adult, it's very saddening.

itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, polka dot bikini !

soapbox · 09/06/2007 12:59

Well I certainly agree with high heels and rude t-shirts - but bikinis are not at all in the same category as far as I am concerned.

I think it is sad and a bit mad, to think a bikini cheapens a two year old little girl.

As Broth says - anything would look cute on a 2yo - swimsuit, bikini or nothing!

SoupDragon · 09/06/2007 13:00

Yes, you're being unreasonable. Unless it is a thong or carries the phrase "Sexy" across the top then chill out. It's just clothing.

lissie · 09/06/2007 13:01

agree with tshirts with inappropriate slogans on them. but bikinis? mine was yellow towelling and i loved it.

MadamePlatypus · 09/06/2007 13:01

No, because I had one when I was about 3 too and it was my favourite item of clothing apart from my long laura ashley material princess dress.

BarbieLovesKen · 09/06/2007 13:14

No, I dont think your being unreasonable at all.
completely cheap.

boomie · 09/06/2007 13:15

DD1 who is 5 occasionally wears one, in fact she has just got this one but DD2 who is nearly 3 has a swimming costume. TBH it doesn't bother me at all.

lizyjane · 09/06/2007 13:15

There was a thread a while ago where someone was asked to cover up their daughter in a swimming pool because she was only wearing bikini bottoms. That was quite horrible.

I agree with those who say that whatever they want to wear is fine.

cylonbabe · 09/06/2007 13:20

i dont like the idea of a bikini on a toddler.
whats wrong with wearing either just a swim nappy, or shorts? or even just the bikin bottom? or a girly swimsuit if you must insist on gender stereotyping?

ChippyMinton · 09/06/2007 13:30

DD (3) wants a bikini but she's such a skinny that the bottoms fall down. Anyone seen any with proper elasticated waist?
I agree the triangle tops are a bit odd as they just won't stay put, but most i've seen are tankini style.
Good point about making loo trips easier.

plummymummy · 09/06/2007 13:34

Not sure how I feel about it. Tankini ones seem like a good compromise though and I see the point about it making toileting easier.

Flame · 09/06/2007 13:40

DD likes pictures (minnie mouse etc) - they tend to be on the top half, hence the needing a top.

She prefers to be nekkid though I do have the teetering line atm with beach nekkidness - she is a big 4 yr old. In my mind she is fine still with nothing on (although sand in bits ain't good), but friends all seem to put clothes on theirs...

I do only get crop top type ones though, no triangles, and all with high straps/wide backs/cross overs. nothing more irritating than a strap falling down as you play.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 09/06/2007 13:41

Unreasonable. Worry about something worthwhile.

glitterfairy · 09/06/2007 13:45

Totally unreasonable! My toddlers loved frilly ones and wearing only the bottoms.

edam · 09/06/2007 13:45

I think people arguing that the OP is sexualising children have got it the wrong way round. Someone who designs a bra - because that's what a bikini top is derived from - for a small child is sexualising them. They don't have breasts, they don't need bras or bikini tops.

Flame · 09/06/2007 13:51

Its hardly a new thing though - I had a bikini when I was teeny.

christywhisty · 09/06/2007 16:41

I quite like the tankinis like the Next one in the link, but I don't like the ones that are just little triangles on little girls.

Manictigger · 09/06/2007 16:45

I had a bikini when I was about 5 or 6 because my older sister had one and of course I wanted to be like her, but I salute any of you who can even remember what you wore when you were two. All the two year-olds that I know can barely speak let alone express a desire to have a bikini. I always assumed that at 2, children were still wearing what parents chose for them, is that a completely wrong assumption?

Boredveryverybored · 09/06/2007 16:47

I loved my bikini when I was tiny too, I just can't understand why anyone would get worked up over a bikini on a toddler or anyone else..its a bikini fgs.
I just don't get it at all.
My dd has always had bikinis, aswell as one pieces. Theres nothing sexual about them at all. Sometimes she wore just the bottoms, sometimes both. A thong bikini I agree is totally unsuitable aswell as probably bloody uncomfortable! but nice little shorts and a crop top I don't get the problem with?

scatterbrain · 09/06/2007 16:48

Manic - do you not have holiday photos of you when you were two ?

worzsel · 09/06/2007 16:52

It wasnt so much the tankinis which offended me as the ones with were very strappy with triangles on the chest, like a scaled down adult version. I find them totally inappropiate for a small child.

unknownrebelbang · 09/06/2007 16:52

I had bikinis throughout my childhood.

I've got boys so not really given it much thought these days, but I never ever thought of the bikini sexualising toddlers until I saw a thread similar to this one a couple of months back.

francagoestohollywood · 09/06/2007 16:54

I never wore a bikini top until I was 13, I guess, when a first sign of breast started to appear. Felt very self-conscious and didn't like it. I think they are wrong and I don't like them. They are useless, and just another marketing strategy to make our children grow up faster.

southeastastra · 09/06/2007 16:55

i think people are looking too deeply into it. it's just a top and it's very hot now. why wasn't there any outcry in the 70s when we wore them?

francagoestohollywood · 09/06/2007 16:57

did you really wear bikinis in the 70s? Me never.
