To think that bikinis on toddlers are vile and wrong..

And to wonder why my Daugher has to wear anything on her top half atall ? I've spend hours this morning trying to find a nice pair of swimming shorts for her and have seen rails and rails of bikinis that are just scaled down versions of adult ones, little triangle tops and everything ! I am struggling to understand why anyone would dress their toddler like a mini adult, it's very saddening.

well if you think that´s bad, a south american friend was telling me all about the thong bikini her 3 yr old niece wears and how ´cute´ it was...hmmmm..

Eulalia · 09/06/2007 12:40

I know awful isn't it. I used to get 2nd hand bikinis and just dress my dd in the bottoms. She is now 5 and seems to prefer all in one costumes. However on our holiday last month it went all saggy in the sea water and we chucked it out. Didn't have time to get another costume and she just ran about in a pair of knickers.

I agree. I find some of the clothes for small children quite scary, in the sense that to old fashioned me they seem really inappopriate.

I managed to find a pair in debenhams but that was the only pair i saw in 2 hours of shopping, Even Mothercare didnt have any or Next or M&S or anywhere.. Very Strange.

The thought of my 2 year old wearing some of the bikini tops i saw is almost unbelieveable.. I cant believe childrens shops even stock them.

I always wore bikinis as a young child - and my DD has worn them too. Almost every friend I knew as a little girl had one too.

How sad that you are sexualising young children to the point where this is even an issue

BrothelSprouts · 09/06/2007 12:44

Agree with cod
"you lto will think of deviancy att he drop of a hat"
It's a bikini, fgs, not a gimp mask!

worzsel · 09/06/2007 12:47

Tbh, It's people who put tops designed to cover breasts on 2 years olds that are doing the sexualising not me, there is no need to wear things like that before you actually have breasts.. before then is worrying.

And as for agreeing with cod i am surprised you could even read it !

Bikinis are much better though - coz they can go to the loo much easier than pulling down a soggy one piece !!

Really don't see the problem myself - for beach or in the garden we have bikinis, for proper swimming we have a cozzie !

Agree with cod too - I LOVED my bikini when I was little - took me ages to persuade mother to let me have one - nice aunty got it me in end and I loved loved loved it !!

worzsel · 09/06/2007 12:50

Why do toddlers need to have anything on their top half atall though ?

Little girls want to look grown up - they love the tops ! I'd rather see a bikini top than a bare chest tbh ! They look sweet - not sexy !

soapbox · 09/06/2007 12:50

I disagree - you would only think about not covering them up, if you were thinking of them in a sexual way.

Putting a bikini top on to me, is no different from wearing a vest, or a t-shirt or any other piece of clothing. It is just what a cute bikini is - a top and a bottom.

OTOH, if you are sexulising it, then it becomes functional - a thing to cover up with.

scatterbrain · 09/06/2007 12:50

I'm talking about 5-7 yr olds - toddlers ?? Well mine was mainly nude !

worzsel · 09/06/2007 12:51

In my opinion sweet is the absolute last thing they look. Children should dress like children, not teenagers !

scatterbrain · 09/06/2007 12:52

Little girls in make-up, high heels, tarty clothes - I agree 100% - but not about bikinis I'm afraid.

soapbox · 09/06/2007 12:52

But wearing a bikini is what little children dress in, ime!

I don't think I would ever not associate a bikini with a little child.

Where on earth did you grow up - bikinis were everywhere when I was little - and that was 40 years ago.

Nbg · 09/06/2007 12:53

dont like bikinis on little girls, no.

It looks cheap.

worzsel · 09/06/2007 12:53

well 5 or 7 year olds are a different kettle of fish although even then i'm not sure.. i'm talking about 2 year olds.

OP posts:
scatterbrain · 09/06/2007 12:54

Not cheap - I am posh and my little girl wears a bikini, a Boden bikini, I wore bikinis, all my friends wore bikinis (35 odd years back).

you are sexualising what should not be sexualised - weird !

BrothelSprouts · 09/06/2007 12:54

Bikini or swimsuit or naked - it's all fine when they're two.

worzsel · 09/06/2007 12:55

I am only 27 and i wouldnt know if bikinis were around for 2 year olds when i was 2 but i know for a fact that my mum never would have put me in one as thats what you do at 2 isnt it, put your child in what you like.

Nbg · 09/06/2007 12:56
