It's batshit, right? And rather frightening. Seriously, Orwell could have written it.

"In addition to reporting hate crime, please report non-crime hate incidents, which can include things like offensive or insulting comments, online, in person or in writing. Hate will not be tolerated in South Yorkshire. Report it and put a stop to it #HateHurtsSY"

Brah you sound like an ignoramus. OF course it's not "anything someone dislikes"

It's hate speech.

Abuse of minorities.

I am sure a lot of you will love this from the parody site "Scarfolk Council"

As opposed to you Ajas, as you clearly are an ignoramus. Hate speech is a vague undefined term used to suppress free speech. Yes, there needs to be controls on inciting violence and discrimination, but not to protect philosophical ideas such as religion and political views. Remember, to many people feminist ideas are hate speech, should feminism therefore be suppressed?Hmm

“can say I don't like someone's ideology or don't agree with their politics but I can't call a woman a fat slag or a teenage girl a dirty little whore.

Except you can. Misogyny is not counted as hate either as a hate crime or "hate incidents"”

Except that this would clearly come under the umbrella of other offensive and insulting comments as outlined in the tweet

The anger about this seems so unfocused - people are angry that misogyny is not a hate crime (again, it would perhaps have been useful for people concerned about this to have stella creasy on talking more about how she wants to make it one but she was effectively no platformed because of her views on something else) yet there is also anger that this tweet seems to be encouraging people to report things that aren’t hate crimes but that are offensive. So, er, like misogyny then.

What it comes down to is a clear subtext that certain specific marginalised groups that we Do Not Like may use this to claim they have been subject to hate speech and we don’t want that do we Hmm

The only people who think nothing wrong with this tweet are authoritarian, you cannot be on the side of liberalism and support such Orwellian thought policing.

The Police need to spend less time on Social Media and more time doing their job. End of.

VeryBerrySeptember · 13/09/2018 11:22

I would like police to deal with actual crimes instead of making space in their packed schedule for monitoring speech and governmentally designated "hate".

If people are inciting or threatening violence, that always was a crime and could be dealt without resorting to terms like "hate speech".

And no I don't want misogyny declared a hate/ thought crime however much I might deplore it.

Ereshkigal · 13/09/2018 11:41

but she was effectively no platformed because of her views on something else)

She wasn't. She ran away.

They aren't intending this to cover misogyny. It covers the things they already consider can be hate crimes. From which misogyny is glaringly absent, because it's all the police would end up doing.

What is the point of reporting non crimes to the police? What do you imagine they will do about them? What do you think they do about the vile abuse women get on social media now?

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 13/09/2018 11:44

exactly! The ones it is specifically outlining as NOT CRIMES.

This. Curtailing people's free speech isn't a problem for many people until it affects them. I've come to realise this in the current environment for women's rights.

Ereshkigal · 13/09/2018 11:46

Just to add, this wasn't about her views on "something else". The questions being asked were completely relevant to the subject of the web chat.

No. It’s not. Lots of people have told you that’s not their concern. Stop accusing other people of being transfixed by the topic you are clearly transfixed by. It’s disingenuous.
