It's batshit, right? And rather frightening. Seriously, Orwell could have written it.

"In addition to reporting hate crime, please report non-crime hate incidents, which can include things like offensive or insulting comments, online, in person or in writing. Hate will not be tolerated in South Yorkshire. Report it and put a stop to it #HateHurtsSY"

I don't think it's "scary" at all. Now perhaps some of the wankers who've shouted things like "Dirty slag!" at me when I was 15 as they passed me in a van, might think again.

AngryAttackKittens · 10/09/2018 08:56

This is the force that oversaw Rotherham. How likely do you think they are to take complaints of harassment from women seriously, given that they considered the organized rape of children no big deal?

Alltheprettyseahorses · 10/09/2018 08:57

I hope they don't whinge at the next round of police cuts if that's all they've got to do with their time. Crime must clearly be at an all-time low.

Chiffon · 10/09/2018 08:58

Well suddenly 'call 101 and log it with the police' makes sense Grin

NeedsAsockamnesty · 10/09/2018 09:10

I would expect it’s significatly related to people who have experanced hate crime not actually knowing if it is or isn’t hate crime.

Talking to someone in a genuine position to assess just means that if it is the correct response shouldn’t happen.

I actually think it’s a good idea.

I say this after seeing a thread on a incredibly popular Facebook group with huge numbers of members (girlsmouth) with a situation that clearly pointed to some type of potential sexual offence ( drunk woman, had consensual sex with drunk man but didn’t consent to anything that would injur her, woman black and blue with very significant bruising over her breasts and torso and arms photograph attached, woman incredibly distressed man incredibly apologetic) where hundreds and hundreds of women were falling over there self to ridicule her, claim it was perfectly acceptable and normal then make comments about poor bloke and why was the women upset and that anybody who thought anything’s else was clearly a man hating sexist.

Sometimes you need to talk to someone who at least has a vague idea of what they are talking about

NeedsAsockamnesty · 10/09/2018 09:12

Should happen not shouldn’t happen.

LoniceraJaponica · 10/09/2018 09:12

"South Yorkshire Police are the Trumpton of police forces. Idiots."

They have shot themsleves in the foot with this tweet.
However, we have had two very serious incidents in our area over the last few days (one is a murder) and the police have already arrested suspects, so they haven't exactly been hanging around.

VeryBerrySeptember · 10/09/2018 09:13

I'd report them to themselves.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 10/09/2018 09:14

I don't think I've seen a Twitter account thread where everyone agreed before.
Given how much that tweet was hated they should report themselves for inciting hate and causing mass outbreaks of sarcasm.

sweethope · 10/09/2018 09:17

The cultural revolution in China had the same kind of madness. Look where that all led.

Kokeshi123 · 10/09/2018 09:20

I am fairly confident that this initiative was dreamed up by some daft "department" in the police force, and that most of the officers also think this is stupid.

FlipnTwist · 10/09/2018 09:22

I arree with South Yorkshire Police
If nothing else it may be a deterrent aainst say people who fat shame on the streets. Also whilst these comments may not constitute 'hate crime' they may constitute harassmentor a public order offence.

VeryBerrySeptember · 10/09/2018 09:23

Really people think this is a reasonable use of public resources?

ShrodingersSturdyPyjamas · 10/09/2018 09:25

They will be around to arrest the Manics very soon.

IrmaFayLear · 10/09/2018 09:33

A friend of mine is a police officer. She was moved to the online crime unit. She said it was soul destroying. Thousands upon thousands of "crimes" reported every week such as "She called me a fat cow" or "They didn't like my FB posts" etc etc. She moved to another unit asap.

Justanotherlurker · 10/09/2018 09:40

This is quite dystopian, Facebook can't even manage hate posts efficiently themselves by deleting them, yet the big bad "South Yorkshire Police" will be able to handle hatred online by opening a case for investigation?

This is going to be perfect for the professionally offended.

Oddcat · 10/09/2018 09:42

They'll be loads of smug MNetters now who all say 'get it logged with 101'

IrmaFayLear · 10/09/2018 09:47

Dh had to log a crime (a pretty juicy crime, not a South Yorkshire-style one!) and had to wait 45 minutes on the 101 line, so this might discourage a few people who've been called a silly old boot from reporting it to the police.

littlbrowndog · 10/09/2018 10:01

Hurty words said to me recently.

Am reporting and expect a swift resolution

There is nothing wrong with broccoli

LoniceraJaponica · 10/09/2018 10:05

"Dh had to log a crime (a pretty juicy crime, not a South Yorkshire-style one!)"

What constitutes a "South Yorkshire style" crime?

MadameButterface · 10/09/2018 10:10

I take it this is something to do with trans people and that is why everyone is finding it ridiculous and unworkable Hmm

Agree with @Needasockamnesty and @AjasLipstick, why not crack down on people being hateful cunts online? online hate speech is what set Jo Cox's murderer off, and caused ched Evans' victim to have to move house away from her support network right when she needed it most. you should see some of the disgusting things people say about the mayor of Sheffield. now we're supposed to be cool with all this so we still get to point and laugh at trans people? ok then

AjasLipstick · 10/09/2018 10:12

It's not fucking "Dystopian" at all. It's simply reminding nasty people that their words have an effect.

Free speech isn't affected.

I can say I don't like someone's ideology or don't agree with their politics but I can't call a woman a fat slag or a teenage girl a dirty little whore.

Good.

MaryDollNesbitt · 10/09/2018 10:17

Philip K. Dick called from the afterlife. He's suing South Yorkshire Police for plagiarism.

In other news, Spielberg is pissed. Scheduling clashes may mean Tom Cruise is unavailable for Minority Report Two.

Stay tuned for updates!

I have a few quid going spare. Anyone want to chip in and buy an island so we can escape these terrifying non-criminals and all their horrific non-crimes? Hmm

happinessiseggshaped · 10/09/2018 10:22

Its not asking people to report any old insult though is it. Its asking people to report racist comments, or nasty comments about someones disability or sexual orientation eg. things that if accompanied by a punch would constitute a hate crime but if just said alone people might not want to report. I don't think its worded well, but I can see the idea.
