It's batshit, right? And rather frightening. Seriously, Orwell could have written it.

"In addition to reporting hate crime, please report non-crime hate incidents, which can include things like offensive or insulting comments, online, in person or in writing. Hate will not be tolerated in South Yorkshire. Report it and put a stop to it #HateHurtsSY"

SYP's tweet has really offended me and hurt my feelz. I think I might take their advice and report this, just in case Wink

BlueTyger · 11/09/2018 11:30

"Hate will not be tolerated"

by whom? The Intolerant? Confused

BlueTyger · 11/09/2018 11:31

Well I went to stroke the cat and she went for me.
I'm dialing 101 now

Grin Grin Grin

The Police Commissioner for SY Police was on Talk Radio with Julia Hartley-brewer - I can't seem to do a link; not usually so incompetent!

He did mention gender id people as potential victims...

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/09/2018 17:40

This is more widespread than just South Yorkshire police! I recently found myself in a situation where I pulled my ex-h up on his lack of maintenance for our DS (politely, no swearing) following my attention being brought to a widely shared public post on FB by my ex-h's partner boasting about a horse they'd rehomed and the exhorbitant cost of keeping it. You would probably not believe me if I said they rang the police about this resulting in me also receiving a phonecall "warning me" about my conduct. I went potty I'm afraid. The officer hadn't even seen the message I sent my ex but subsequently agreed that I had done nothing wrong. However, this ridiculous situation probably took up several hours of his time, costs of phonecalls, taking statements from the "injured" party. What an utter waste of police resources. It makes my blood boil and particularly when the police are constantly, rightly, complaining about cutbacks that mean they can't do their jobs properly. Utter madness.

Katherine2626 · 11/09/2018 17:48

Can this be real?? If someone says something mildly insulting to me I must tell the police and then, instead of being out on the streets monitoring crime, the police will be sitting at computers reading about hurt feelings? Oh Purleese.

Gersemi · 11/09/2018 18:02

Formidable, I hope you put in a formal complaint? This sort of ridiculousness really needs to be recorded and properly reviewed by someone senior.

Lillyringlet · 11/09/2018 18:02

So this actually makes sense. It might sound stupid to most people but often when you are the victim of something you might report it for you think it is not serious enough. I was victim three times to sexual assault of varying degrees and each time I thought I was over reacting - something like this is to help those who are in the category in terms of racial related crime.

It also might give them a chance to pick up on trends that they can help reduce any chance of real crimes occuring. More often than not offensive tactics are better than reactive ones, especially when it comes to racial issues.

There is also the third part that it gives those who feel victim to feel like they have done or can do something than react in a negative manner that will result in violence or an actual crime.

Finally those that normally would be filling the crime lines for this behaviour (and it does happen especially with very public events of this sort of thing) will be focused on a non urgent one that can be used via more efficent data scraping methods.

So it sounds stupid but believe it or not similar campaigns have saved lives and money - it might sound like "snowflakes" but it is actually a well thought out strategy.

I say well done. I have seen other campaigns like this mocked but seen amazing results where a university was able to dig out an organisation taking advantage of desperate students or even stop radicalization of students.

ClaryFray · 11/09/2018 18:08

Someone's been stabbed vs someone called me fat online. I know what one I want the police to deal with...

Teacher22 · 11/09/2018 18:12

It sounds quite helpful to me. Would they do someone for 'looking at you funny', do you think? A baby glared at me from its pram recently...

rainbowsandsmiles · 11/09/2018 18:26

Not read all the thread, but how on earth would you even police that?! "Hewwo?? Powice?! My fwiend said I smell and I've put on weight, she's totes fat shaming me and being meeeeen"

sound of hurty feelz police screeching to your door

Is there not enough actual crime out there to be getting on with?!
FFS.

OlennasWimple · 11/09/2018 18:26

DD told me that she hates me this morning and I'm an idiot (I insisted that she do up her shoe laces before going into school)

I can't tell whether I should report her for saying mean things about me - and it's obviously a hate crime, by her own words - or she should report me for being obviously cruel

Maybe to be safe we should both report each other?

IrmaFayLear · 11/09/2018 18:34

There’ll be a long line of us, OlennasWimpole. “You weirdo!” Is regularly hurled at me.

Surely we’re a long way behind the case I saw in the paper the other day where a boy had attacked his dm for serving salad for tea. Otoh in South Yorkshire I don’t know what would get priority...

Jux · 11/09/2018 18:42

If there were another way of reporting non-crime (hate, among other things) that'd be fine. Something on-line which can be trawled for keyword or repetitive instances without tying up actual people, might work.

storminabuttercup · 11/09/2018 18:42

As a PP has said context is everything here, I believe it was after the barrage of hate speak on their page after a woman was arrested running around Barnsley with a knife. It all got very heated on there. Heck some people even wanted Tommy Robinson to go sort stuff out. So although I’m not defending SYP I think that in context of what went on that day it makes sense

snowpo · 11/09/2018 18:50

Read the red speech bubble people. Hate crime has a specific definition.

Smudge100 · 11/09/2018 18:51

I happened to be in an upstairs bedroom when the lady who had been having an affair with my (then) DH strutted past with her mother. I opened the window and bawled out fishwife style ‚F#cking släg!‘. I was promptly served by a harassment notice by west mercia police, who advised me that she had ‚done nothing wrong‘ since adultery is not a criminal offence (who said it was?) and she could walk wherever she wanted, whether i liked the sight of her or not. So that was me told.

From the ripper to Rotherham, SYP have demonstrated they give no fucks for women.
Gender identity however is so important they’ll investigate hurt feelz even if no crime.
I’d call them wankers but under this dispensation they’d probably investigate me

MsBeee · 11/09/2018 18:57

Next it will, "triggered" using triggering speech should be reported.

My God, just read the red bubble, that is scary. Orwell has landed.

rainbowsandsmiles · 11/09/2018 18:57

Oh,OK, just read the little box bit in red! That makes a bit more sense.
No,it's not OK to abuse people/individuals for their sexuality, gender, race.

BoomBoomsCousin · 11/09/2018 18:58

I don't think this is so utterly outrageous, except that they frame it as something they can do something effective about and that seems out of keeping with the Force's resources. Whereas I would see it as useful for understanding where crime might flare up. So intelligence for preventative policing. budget planning and liaising with other agencies not actionable in the sense that they'll go around and tell people off for doing nasty but legal things every time they get a report.

DebbysMum · 11/09/2018 19:03

Don't they have enough real crime there to police? Confused
