To do a ouija board on my own?

LucyDontLockIt · 23/08/2018 13:11

Got another threat going but wanted to ask a quick question.

I want to a ouija board to determine whether anything is haunting my house. I'm a non spiritual person, non religious, don't really believe in the supernatural but I'm being tested at the minute.

I've been to some of the most supposedly haunted places on Earth (Poveglia anyone?! Look it up) and felt nothing. So I'm not easily convinced but something isn't right. Nobody will talk to me about it and nobody believes me. I'm tempted to just do a ouija board on my own. If nothing happens, I'll tell myself I was imagining everything else.

AIBU to consider doing this??

i think it would be a really bad idea.

Deshasafraisy · 23/08/2018 13:14

Do what you like love! Maybe watch a few horror movies first to prepare for the “what if’s”

MissionItsPossible · 23/08/2018 13:15

Well if you don’t already have ghosts that’s a way to attract some.

FASH84 · 23/08/2018 13:15

YABU to do an ouija board at all, unless you are 14, at a sleep over and have just watched candy man, pet semetary or similar

sheepsheep · 23/08/2018 13:19

What is happening that is making you feel like this?

Maybe we can help find explanations.

MeyMary · 23/08/2018 13:21

Why do you think your house is haunted? What's going on?

ManicUnicorn · 23/08/2018 13:22

They are dangerous. Don't mess with them.

HairyBaby · 23/08/2018 13:23

Exactly.

OP, are you the person with the thread title that suggests you believe you saw a ghost through your camera? This is really not an intelligent way of dealing with this.

RandomObject · 23/08/2018 13:25

I don't believe in ouija boards, but I have watched enough horror films to know that 'don't use it by yourself' is literally THE FIRST RULE OF OUIJA BOARDS.

MurunBuchstansagur · 23/08/2018 13:25

They don’t work to contact spirits but your subconscious and the ideomotor effect may well combine to scare the shit out of you so I’d advise against.

maxthemartian · 23/08/2018 13:26

They are not dangerous but nor do they do anything. You'd be just as well playing Monopoly by yourself.

MeyMary · 23/08/2018 13:27

Anyhow, look up how they work. There's nothing woo about it

There were also tests with blindfolded people. Drastic decrease in coherency of the board's messages... (Surprise surprise.Grin)

Anyhow. Get priest (or religious person) of the religion you belong to / feel connected to to cleanse your house. Far less potential for making it potentially worse (psychologically imo).

But seriously, why do you think you're haunted? Is someone playing a cruel joke?

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2018 13:27

It’s a board game.

If you’d play another board game by yourself then go for it.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 23/08/2018 13:27

exactly, Murun, it is all about the power of the human mind, not spirits. And goodness knows what horrors lay at the backs of our minds...

SendintheArdwolves · 23/08/2018 13:28

Ouija boards work on the idiomotor effect (you'll be moving the planchette, but you won't realise you are) so it won't give you any actual info about whether your house is haunted.

If you feel abxious/uneasy, can you get a friend who is a bit woo to come and burn some sage or something? Don't call any "professionals" - they will just tell you that the house is chock full of unhappy spirits and it will be both time consuming and expensive to have them "fix" it.

Disclaimer : ghosts aren't real, but that doesn't stop you feeling anxious /scared/ unsettled once the idea is on your head. Do a nice, benign ritual that will help you feel that thr house is "cleared" and get a friend to do it with you so you don't freak yourself out.

firehousedog1 · 23/08/2018 13:29

I always thought you needed multiple participants. So you know, someone is doing the pushing and having you all on bit? Nope I don't believe that you can contact the dead with a upside down glass.

StopCloudSeeding · 23/08/2018 13:31

What is happening to make you feel your house is haunted?

I certainly would not use a ouija board.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 23/08/2018 13:32

I think that one person can do the pushing and still be convinced that they are not doing so.

It is a bit like that 'pendulum' thing whereby you can find out the sex of your unborn baby. Yes it works, but only because your hand is making tiny movements. Some people ask 'it' all kinds of questions...

MrsMotherHen · 23/08/2018 13:35

Nope I wouldn't am too wuss Blush

Lemonysnicketts · 23/08/2018 13:38

Seriously, don’t. People will say it’s a board game but it really isn’t. I speak from first hand knowledge (daughter of a priest) who has had to rush to people’s houses in the late evening to exorcise them after they thought it would be fun to do one. I’m really glad you’ve had no experiences of spiritual context but keep it that way. I’ve had the opposite and it’s really terrifying. If you’re uneasy, do what was suggested upthread and get your local priest to do a blessing of the house, but doing a oiuja board is inviting trouble.

LuckyDiamond · 23/08/2018 13:44

who has had to rush to people’s houses in the late evening to exorcise them after they thought it would be fun to do one

Ooh I’d love to hear more about this.

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2018 13:48

It really is a board game. It was a parlour game until it garnered popularity as a spiritualist’s tool during the First World War.

People do it thinking something is going to happen and their subconscious mind creates “something”.

Raven88 · 23/08/2018 13:49

Just make sure you close it properly by saying goodbye check online for how to do it safely.

TheFaerieQueene · 23/08/2018 13:50

Do what ever you like. It won’t be anymore exciting than a person in a room with a game.
